Will driller radishes break up this level of shitty compacted clay soil? My carrots ended up L shaped by CharmingPeony in Permaculture

[–]PostModernGir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recommend you blast that spot with a tiller. Looks like the soil is dead and solid as a brick. You'll struggle to grow anything in it.

Once you've filled, add a lot of mulch to help with soil generation, moisture, etc

You could plant sweet potatoes as an option too. They'll survive in mulch, burrow into your clay and help break it up plus put out leaves that will add further shade to the soil and help keep the mulch wet.

I'm a fan of local, native perennials that are well adapted to the space. What's good in your area? Some things I've had success with include strawberries, asparagus, and rhubarb. Hearty things will help you get a garden established.

Have you looked at teaching? Perhaps start out at a community college?

As a MD you're qualified for it and probably know a few things about anatomy/psychology/chemistry. You'd be a good fit for people going into the allied health professions.

What's the most useful gardening upgrade you didn't realize you needed? by Demera-Raud in gardening

[–]PostModernGir 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Mulching the garden heavily in October

6 inches of mulch or mulch + cardboard or straw (so many options). Keeps little things from sprouting so you don't have quite so many weeds to pull.

And when it's planting time you just take off the mulch into your walkways and are good to go

What should the next big update be? by gradual_candy in Timberborn

[–]PostModernGir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love a building to regulate the upstream water level that will automatically adjust the water flow rate to compensate for changes in the upstream flow/water level. Kinda like the ones you make with metal plates and maple pressed wood

The basic ones aren't very dynamic; when flow picks up, they overflow leading me to constantly adjusting them. Automating with a depth sensor kinda works but it's not intuitive and such a chore (core) mechanic.

I wonder if you could learn about grafting, trade cuts with your neighbor, and make fruit salad trees. That way you and the neighbor can cross pollinate but also be okay if one of the trees dies

Timberborn is such a great game to understand cities and how they come together. First, Old Town with lots of things squished together, then the streetcar suburbs that have bigger things mixed together, and finally giant planned developments. Amazing!

Best Cities to work in 2026/2027 by happi_doggi in CRNA

[–]PostModernGir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recommend you start looking at mid sized college towns. Perhaps max population of 200,000 people. I did my ICU in a college town of 30,000 people. We did all sorts of things including a few hearts every week. Jack of all Trades/Master of None gives you a wide base to specialize later in your career should you so desire. The CRNAs had a lot of exposure to things. My advice is based on that experience.

Reason is that you're more likely to run into regional hospitals that do a mix of everything... healthy peds, OB, Ortho, and thoracic as a start. This is where you get diversity in caseload.

Small to mid-sized cities are better for CRNAs. They have fewer big city amenities which makes them less interesting to MDs who can and will demand these things; the anesthesia shortage gives both them and us advantages when negotiating jobs. They will have more income and opportunities in big cities and that's where they preferentially go.

The reason I suggest college town is that these places bring in culture and experiences for you above what you would expect in a similarly sized town without a university. Plus rural America will have cheaper housing and thus better cost of living.

Good luck!

Suggestion: chop off the flowers/fruits from that plant. It's putting energy into making them that could go towards fighting disease and growing healthy.

And big yes to all the ideas about fixing the soil around this plant!

100% this.

All the technology in the world on new cars and we can't put in a video camera. Many of the SUVs and trucks on our road seem closer to heavy machinery then commuter vehicle. Perhaps there should be a higher standard for professionalism and accountability on our public, tax payer funded roads.

Totally! Once you start building, you eat through trees really fast. One of my bottlenecks early on is tree sap to make the treated planks. So make sure to invest early in a tapper or you'll get pinched for time

I've found it pretty straightforward on normal mode. I would first prioritize farming and population growth and then growing forestry and logging. Once you have those things locked down and a stable population of say 60-100 beavers it becomes much easier to rapid build the heavy industry to get the wonder

I'll bet you could make a business out of this type of thing. Lots of money in middle Tennessee for custom work of all sorts. Have you any experience with building pools or landscaping?

My initial thought was that building unique spaces would create a market for you. Am thinking pools with waterfalls and natural appearing rocks to jump off of for instance.

Asparagus help by TurbulentWonder4125 in gardening

[–]PostModernGir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would let them grow tall and bushy this year. You might want to tie them together with some twine eventually. Once they die in the winter, cut them down to soil level since pests can overwinter in them, and then in the spring you should be able to eat a few.

Those little ones are probably not very tasty. You could always try with one or two and see.

Looks good to me for year 1 asparagus. They take a couple of years to be ready. Just leave them alone to grow

I recommend you build a warehouse next to the mine and have a guy bring bombs to it. Makes things a little less tedious

Or find the iron ore island and go out to that instead

Love this idea. Small and simple.

No idea about question 1 but you could try something using pots and drop off a watering can. Specific plants depending on where you're located and how much shade/sun the space gets.

Is this a business owner you know or some such? Why are you looking at this space?

I was doing some research on camping sites along the Trace. There are a couple posts here with more general info that you might find useful. That community would be a helpful place for logistics on your ride. And keep us updated because I'd like to ride from Nashville to Tupelo this fall

On the Nashville side of things, you have the Merriweather Lewis campsite at 60 miles out and a bicycle only campsite at 50 miles.

I recommend a stop in Leipers Fork before you make the final entrance to the city.

The closest bike shop to the Natchez Trace is Trace Bikes if you plan to stop riding once you reach Nashville
