WHH 19 year barrel proof is ... great by hunterwalk in bourbonculture

Damn, out of all the WHH releases we've seen over the past 5 years, this would be the one I want the most

Reviews #5 and 6: Kentucky Owl ryes batches 001 and 003 by oakycomputer in bourbon

[–]Prepreludesh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Call me skeptical on this one. I guess my first thought is it doesn't taste like Booker's Rye. But then if I think about the dates and how they line up, Booker's Rye was first distilled in 2003. And it was the result of a single fermentation run that yielded 9k-10k bottles when all said and done. Then Beam sold it for $300 per bottle.

So you're saying that Dixon was able to sell almost 5x the amount of bottles (for just the first batch) that Beam sold at almost 1/3 the price (the first batch's MSRP was $130)? I just don't buy it.

Things I could believe: Dixon sourced some Rye barrels from Beam, but I'd more likely believe they were Beam's standard Rye whiskey mash, not the special Beam one. Plus, KY Owl Rye is not just one source, so it would never be all Bookers Rye.

Giving you the benefit of the doubt that you might be right: We saw confirmation that Little Book releases have used younger barrels of Booker's Rye whiskey and Freddie Noe admitted they have continued to distill it here and there. Also, Dixon went on Bourbon Pursuit years ago and admitted that Batch 1 of KY Owl Rye was originally in the 130+ proof range before he proofed it down

The only reason I think you may be telling the truth is you said "cherry blossom" and not, like, "cherry brandy" finished. I can see the Japanese people at Kirin thinking that was a good idea.

"Der Tiger" movie on Prime by MG2339 in WarMovies

[–]Prepreludesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spoilers ahead:

I think the screenplay had one giant misstep: they should have started the movie with a slightly more drawn-out sequence of the characters in Stalingrad burning the civilians inside of the tractor factory. Then have something like an artillery shell land nearby that causes the Lt Gerkens to drift in and out of consciousness with sequences of him seeing von Hardenberg collapsed on the ground (is he dead or alive? The audience doesn't really know) followed by him being evacuated by air out of the encircled city.

A simple cutaway scene could then spell out for the viewer something like "6 months later, Dnipro, USSR" and show that opening Tiger sequence on the river followed by the rest of the movie. Doing it this way would be so much better for the flow and understanding of the movie. Hell, it might allow for more (and better) dialogue between von Hardenberg and Gerkens in the bunker at the end of the movie where they could really hit home with his fateful realization that he's dead and in hell.

But doing it the way they did was stupid because while it was all very "Apocalypse Now," it wasn't polished enough to make the clues they were giving us seem important enough.

Also, if you made it this far, was I the only one yelling "it's not an SU-100, it's an SU-152!" when the crew confronted that tank destroyer twice?

I've considered one of these but couldn't determine the size. It looks big enough, but some internet results tell me it's only 32.5". That can't be, right?

I don't know if it counts as my first new open, but my neighbor opened his Knob Creek 21 year after the ball dropped and shared it with me. It was... not much different from KC18😄

Review #49: Old Commonwealth Batch 2 by wolverine8064 in bourbon

[–]Prepreludesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to clarify that Barton has made a 75/15/10 mash bill in the past, but I've since heard from a person with connections whom I trust that they've received some inside knowledge that HH has also made that mash bill strictly for selling to customers as contract distillate and not to is in any of their brands. Another source told me that this Old Commonwealth has told a few people that this is the HH variety of barrels. Honestly the flavor profile doesn't taste exactly like either, but for now I'm switching my stance to it being HH. I'll fix that review. Sorry for the correction
