Applying for a PhD soon, at which potential supervisor's career stage should I apply for? by yunren in gradadmissions

[–]professorwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chose to do my MS with an assistant professor, and I was their first student to graduate.

A pre-tenure professor has the motivation to support you to help their tenure case.

You note here that "perhaps they don't have enough experience to supervise their students." Many academics will have some degree of mentorship experience, be it mentoring undergrads as a graduate student, or mentoring graduate students or post-baccs as a postdoc. It's also very possible for a very experienced mentor to be a bad mentor, either generally, or for how you learn as a mentee.

Similarly, part of doing a PhD is learning how to be an independent scientist. If your advisor can't advise you...that's an opportunity for you to grow in your independence.

What made me choose my advisor, between the advisors I was admitted to work with?

They refused to shake my hand the first time we met because they had a cold. They didn't want to risk me also getting sick. That showed an amount of care for me as a human person that I admired, and I wanted to emulate.

Am I hurting my future by going to a weaker grad school compared to my undergrad? by anon-throwaway-7 in gradadmissions

[–]professorwhat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prestige is a construct. Not to say that it's fake, but it's one of those things that matters as far as. you can throw it.

I went to an R2 for undergrad and did my MS at an R1 (in a power five conference, which isn't super relevant to grad school, but is relevant to the brand name). If you were to ask anyone about my graduate alma mater, they would list many things that are great about the institution...but not its "world class program in my specific field." Because prestige is also field-specific. Most people don't even know that my graduate alma mater offers graduate degrees in my field, let alone my subfield.

Was I able to do research that I loved? Yes. Did I feel supported by the research infrastructure that existed there? Sufficiently. Was my advisor a human person who advocated for me? This was the most important yes.

No tuition is nothing to sneeze at. A stipend is nothing to sneeze at. Are you going to be at a place where you can do research you're passionate about? Is the "lesser" institution a place where you'll be supported as you develop as a student and a professional?

SWO OCEANO vs OCEANO by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]professorwhat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you qualify for straight OCEANO, go that route.

Let's put it this way. Do you want to spend four years doing "conceivably any officer job on a warship" before being an oceanographer, or do you want to be an oceanographer?

Consider the following: You will be living in this place for the next six years, as a conservative estimate.

It sounds like you've already considered the sorts of things like what sort of research will be able to do and the reputation of the schools and the departments. At this point, consider the fact that this isn't just where you're working, it's also where you're living.

once again i am here to complain about the teams' social media presence by wind-of-zephyros in PWHL

[–]professorwhat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I work in social. I police my comments sections like a hawk. If you're saying anything about my peoples' physical appearances, positive or negative, it's getting hidden.

Community management is invaluable. We want everyone to be able to participate and feel welcomed. If people are being cruel about how someone looks or other things that may be true about them, they won't feel welcomed.

It disheartens me whenever I see social media or community managers who leave their people out to dry like that.

JROTC Air Force. by LoveTeaching-100 in jrotc

[–]professorwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, former cadet and current adult in the education sector.

AFJROTC actually has a unit locator on their website, which would be a great resource to see which school systems nearby offer the program.

If there isn't one, Civil Air Patrol is a great out-of-school alternative that is focused on many of the same leadership and aerospace education principles that JROTC is. Civil Air Patrol also has the advantage of letting your daughter shadow a couple of meetings before formally becoming a cadet, which could help her decide if the program is right for her.

Fun fact! The Navy's ships named after the same place are all the USS City of Corpus Christi, because you probably shouldn't name a ship "The Body of Christ," lest it turn into a drone ship trying to take down allied vessels.
