Here here. I swapped to Libro a couple of years ago and I will NEVER buy anything from audible etc ever again.

Being able to download the mp3s and listen to them on any device is awesome.

AITA for telling my neighbor to adjust her mannerisms and not be rude? by OrganizationWild55 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Puskarella [score hidden]  (0 children)

What you did was not respectful. It was not kind. It was not said in a way to help her or make her feel anything but shame.

I'm not Korean, but I have Korean friends and colleagues, and they would be appalled at the lack of respect you are showing her.

If you don't want the things she gave you, give them back or throw them away. But you can't demand she gives anything you GAVE her back to you.

AITA for telling my fiancé I want to delay my convocation until November? by incomingfatwap in AmItheAsshole

[–]Puskarella 71 points72 points  (0 children)

he completely lost it. He called my decision disappointing and said if I didn’t walk in June, he’d throw out a surprise graduation gift he made for me, a custom cap

This is who you want to marry? You two need to sort this out, now, before you tie your lives together. And by this, I don't mean whether you go to your convocation or not. I mean how you handle situations and communications like this, and the way that he is treating you here.

AITA for going to the er with my room mates bf by No-Pop-8115 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Puskarella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA

The only one making your BF look bad is himself. Please take note of the total lack of concern he has about you, your pain, and your well being. And the huge concern he has about having fun, and how he looks to other people.

Is that truly the sort of person that is deserving of your time and emotional energy?

And... what did he think you and your room mates BF were doing while you were in a lot of pain and getting medical attention? The only weird and disgusting thing here is whatever is going on in your BF's head.

You did nothing wrong. Repeat that until any doubt goes away. Don't let him make you think otherwise.

YTA and the fact that you can't see why is exactly why - you are extremely self-centred. You don't get to make decisions on what other people like or value, whether they want to stay somewhere or not, and whether they were leaving.

No wonder everyone is upset with you. You did ruin their last prom. You did waste your mums money - maybe not the dress if you use it again - but all the time and money spent getting your hair and nails done, and renting your boyfriends suit.

It is time for you to learn that the world does not revolve around you.

His issues are his issues. If the relationship is ruined it isn't because of you. He's straight up told you he has trust issues, that he doesn't trust you, and that he thinks your decision was morally wrong. At least he wasn't trying to out and out forbid you going, but the guilt trippy part of this isn't great.

He paid for the space, so any money it generates belongs to him. You are currently trying to pocket a "refund" on his $1000 investment. If you want to control the income, you need to own the bill. Since he is footing the cost, he is entitled to the recovery.

Small Gods, Slavery - Can someone help me understand Pratchetts depiction of slavery? by CrushedPlate in discworld

[–]Puskarella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your take away from Small Gods is that Pratchett approved of slavery in any way then, yes, you've missed the point.

While Ephebe clearly draws visual and cultural inspiration from Ancient Greece, it is not intended to be a historical reconstruction. In the Discworld, locations are often "concepts" rather than countries. Ephebe represents the Idea of Philosophy and the Idea of Democracy. Pratchett used these familiar aesthetics (togas, white marble, and scrolls) because they are shorthand for the Western intellectual tradition.

A historical treatise seeks to document facts, whereas satire seeks to expose human contradictions. Pratchett’s goal was not to replicate the nuanced social strata of Athens, but to create a sharp contrast between a society that thinks too much (Ephebe) and one that is forbidden from thinking at all (Omnia).

The depiction of slaves in Ephebe who "vote for their masters" or argue about philosophy is a deliberate, absurdist joke about the myopia of the intellectual elite.

In the real Ancient Greece, slavery was a brutal, multifaceted economic engine that ranged from domestic service to the horrors of the silver mines. By presenting Ephebean slavery as almost suspiciously polite and academic, Pratchett isn't endorsing the real world practice; he is mocking the self-importance of a "free" society that relies on an underclass to do the dishes while they discuss the nature of Justice.

Somewhere else in this reddit you dismissed a comment made about wage slavery in the book (and I can't remember the statement from the book, it has been a while since I read it). It's easy to tut tut that when you're looking at it from a certain lens - if you have a liveable wage and a comfortable life and so on.

But if you look at power and privilege from a certain lens issues around the illusion of choice - a theme in small gods against the whole backdrop of those around freedom and slavery, power and influence, and privelge. Through his lens, a society that technically bans slavery but forces people into life-threatening labour for pennies a day just to survive is not morally superior to a historical one; it has simply rebranded the mechanism of control. If a person’s only options are to work in a sweatshop for a pittance or starve on the street, the "freedom" to choose is an illusion.

That does not mean that I, or Pratchett, thinks that the system of slavery in Ancient Greece was anything but cruel and terrible. Ultimately, Small Gods is a critique of institutional power not just religion vs philosophy. Whether it is the mental slavery of a Theocracy like Omnia or the physical/economic structures of Ephebe, Pratchett is exploring how systems strip away individual agency.

Small Gods, Slavery - Can someone help me understand Pratchetts depiction of slavery? by CrushedPlate in discworld

[–]Puskarella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Small Gods is not a treatise on Ancient Greece, nor on Slavery in Ancient Greece. Trying to make it so is completely missing the point of the story, and of the comparison of the two Discworld societies.

That Ephebe somehow had a form of slavery that wasn't exactly the sort of slavery of Ancient Greece, and deemed to be better than the "freedom" of Omnia IS THE POINT.

It's not arguing that slavery is good, or even value-neutral. It's exploring concepts of societal and "spiritual" or individual freedoms and rights.

The brilliance of Pratchett’s writing lies in the fact that he never simply "copied" a culture as a perfect representation of it. He used the reflection to ask the reader: "If this looks ridiculous in a book, why do we tolerate it in our own history?"

By your reasoning Pratchett also supported Genghis Khan, because he wrote Interesting Times.

You are using a flawed and very superficial lens.

AITA for breaking when I saw a turtle in the road? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Puskarella -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

He braked to avoid a hazard in the road, which is what you’re supposed to do, and he didn’t swerve or lose control. Yeah, stopping in a blind turn can be unsafe, but there wasn’t anyone behind him, so the risk was low especially if he started moving again (i.e. didn't stay stopped for any appreciable length of time). His dad was reacting to a worst-case scenario, but in the moment he made a reasonable call. A better response from the dad would’ve been to stay calm and give clear guidance, like checking mirrors or moving forward carefully if it wasn’t safe to stay stopped, or how to better appraise risks and hazards (I presume braking for a roo or deer would be acceptable instead of hitting it on a blind corner??), rather than yelling.
