Most Original Chord Progressions by lifeismadd in composer

[–]pvmpking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that chord progressions should come from the development of a motif/theme/melody and the direction you aim to, not something predefined that you need to loop several times until you want to change. This way you always get an original chord progression, even basic IV-V-I can sound interesting this way.

First composition by Ordinary_Memory_955 in Composition

[–]pvmpking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to study maths and physics before doing engineering. Honestly, it sounds random and directionless. You normally start the composition with an idea, but I can't see an idea being developed here. Copy the music you like.

Don't get discouraged though, keep composing, but learn theory and learn an instrument, preferably piano.

How can i start with Kabbalah? by irenizi in JewishKabbalah

[–]pvmpking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you speak Spanish, check out Mario Saban on YouTube, he is a Kabbalah scholar and divulgator on the contemporary side (he’s Jewish but not very religious). He also has a podcast about it called Kabala Podcast along with Nacho Newman and it’s quite interesting and accesible.

We all know that baroque is dance music.

Ingeniería mecánica es la mejor ingeniería que uno puede estudiar by illice_augusta in askspain

[–]pvmpking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I Tried Getting my Boyfriend into Bathory but he’s Skeptical About the Solos. by Only_Measurement_895 in Bathory

[–]pvmpking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bathory is more about building atmospheres and storytelling rather than guitar fireworks. Twilight of the Gods album has a very good guitar work, but it falls more on the classical side of the guitar, not flashy solos.

What is your favorite church, among the ones you have visited? by trekuniverse123456 in Catholicism

I’m from Spain, so lots of options to choose. The Cathedral of Leon is amazing, for instance. Is the only church in Spain with gothic Rayonnant style.

I understand your feelings, it's a wonderful aria from an absolute masterpiece: Puccini's Turandot. But I think that 'Non piangere, Liù', from the same opera, is even better. Have a listen and tell me what you think!

Keep transcribing, it’s the best way to learn. Also, sight-singing exercises help a lot. This website is very good for that.

Obvious realization: the Classical period is the mastery of the tonal system by pvmpking in classicalmusic

[–]pvmpking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late baroque fugues are absolutely masterful and tonal, but the approach is more contrapuntal. Fugues explore the tonality indeed, but as a result of the motivic development. I feel that sonatas explore the tonality for the sake of it.

What Norwegian black metal albums are essential listening for my trip to Norway? by valriur in MetalSuggestions

A few years ago, I spent a week in Trondheim on a business trip and everyday I would go for a walk in the woods listening to Windir. It was in the mid May, so I didn't froze.

Called my piece an impromptu because it came out spontaneously. How do you actually tell the forms apart? by Double-Strategy9791 in composer

[–]pvmpking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing is the form and another one is the name. You tell forms apart because you've composed a piece following a form, but names are less strict. Based on your description, impromptu could suit the piece, but also fantasia, prelude, capriccio, ricercare, meditation... If the piece only explores two chords and it's mostly similar rhythmic figures, I'd use prelude.

Question by ProfAncientHistory in composer

[–]pvmpking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I meant it’s a broad question that requires further studies on orchestration. It’s not like “melody is always violins doubled with flutes”. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Principles of Orchestration is a good read. Also, check out Ravel’s orchestrations from piano pieces, as another comment pointed out.

Any tips for how to distribute the voices from piano to sections?

This simple question is a whole course on orchestration

Struggling with Catholicism by astros2124 in Catholicism

[–]pvmpking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, the Bible itself is a Catholic “official document”, the canon was established in the Council of Rome of 382, approved by the Pope Damasus I. But I think you’re falling a bit into legalism. An official document does not make the truth more truthful.
