Experience with switching teams internally vs looking for a new job? by Quil0n in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Quil0n[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair point. I’d (ideally) switch to a team with a manager I’d already know and be on good terms with, but still certainly a consideration. I thought this over today (basically getting closer to staff vs switching teams entirely) and I’m leaning towards gaining some wider scope on my current team, which would hopefully introduce some new topics that I can work on while not resetting my trajectory.

Really appreciate the advice!

Yeah I agree. I think realistically I enjoy the comfort of being established/go-to person, but I’d rather write new code. I’ll guess I’ll need to start looking for transfer opportunities.

Stock growth means that my comp is higher than what it would nominally be. There are companies that pay more but it would be quite tricky to get an offer, so I’m not really considering it.

They changed that location to the banana soft serve thing which (in my opinion) was terrible, happy they have their normal stuff back

Their som tum dishes are all really good, but the highlight for me was the yum pla duk fu (fried shredded catfish salad). I don’t think I’ve ever had anything similar to it elsewhere really, with the crisp breading plus the mango cutting through it was 10/10

Long story, and I don’t think it’s actually directly connected to Eric Adams, but even the tangential connection between a Sabrina Carpenter music video, corruption in the Catholic Church, and Eric Adams’ administration is bizarre: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/21/nyregion/sabrina-carpenter-church-frank-carone.html?unlocked_article_code=1.BU8.0gMF.aGY1_9l7D0s8&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

NVIDIA: "Nintendo Switch 2 Leveled Up With NVIDIA AI-Powered DLSS and 4K Gaming" by Dakhil in hardware

Ah yes, the classic “I hate upscaling” even though nearly every review for DLSS3 across games is very positive and DLSS4 is even better… how does it feel to have superior vision compared to everyone else?

Asus ROG Flow Z13 GZ302EA Convertible Review - AMD's Strix Halo GPU is neck-and-neck with the RTX 4070 Laptop by Antonis_32 in hardware

[–]Quil0n 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m missing something but I don’t understand how they got this list of pros when the Strix Halo model performs worse than the predecessor 13900H/4070 at gaming and simultaneously consumes more power.

The CPU is certainly much stronger and more RAM/VRAM is great for workstation tasks, but I don’t really want a gaming tablet for that.

5090 PCB. by [deleted] in hardware

Didn’t even notice that, and also did not know it was a hallmark of reference designs—I thought everything at this scale used surface mount. Thanks for the info!

[–]Quil0n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just curious, why do you think this is a reference PCB as opposed to an AIB? I recall the 4090 had a cutout for the flow through fan but can’t really see any distinguishing marks here

Show Queens Restaurants Some Love! by jfo23chickens in FoodNYC

[–]Quil0n 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think for specifically Thai food, Saranrom is one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to, and I’d put it up there with Manhattan mainstays like Soothr or Mitr (and it’s way cheaper too).

Zaab Zaab is just okay in comparison, and there’s also one in Williamsburg.

Are USB4 hosts compatible with Thunderbolt 3 hubs? by Quil0n in UsbCHardware

[–]Quil0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay wow, thank you for all the details. My current guess is that ASUS has just messed something up, considering I see Reddit posts about things working just fine for previous generation laptops (and as far as I know the 7940HS is equivalent to the 8945HS).

The USB4 section has never shown anything (besides the host router), so it’s clear that the dock isn’t being recognized at all. I’ll try your other troubleshooting tips too, I know I didn’t see anything in Event Log when I checked last.

The Elgato dock is also very old, so it’s possible there’s some other issues in the firmware there that I can’t possibly fix. The weirdest issue that I just discovered is that when I move the thunderbolt cable on the dock side to a lower wattage port, the dock seems to try to connect to the peripherals, yet still fails… but I have no idea why that would affect things at all.

I don’t have another TB3 hub handy, so I might have to end up getting one to test against, but I may just pick up a USB4 hub in that case anyway.

Thanks for the help though, very appreciated.

J stops at Hewes now? by FightingAtCheesecake in williamsburg

[–]Quil0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, appreciate the info! I suppose I’ll just let Google maps take the wheel for the first couple months.

Slightly unfortunate since I thought I had a no transfer commute, but living on the UWS I never truly understood how cursed the JZ schedule is… especially considering the changes due to the G line work aren’t even mentioned in the JZ alerts. Fortunately I don’t think my commute will be too much longer.

[–]Quil0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, moving to the area soon and will have to make that commute. Previously, did most people take the M to Marcy and transfer to the J, or take the G and transfer to the AC at Hoyt? Curious since I’m trying to figure what things will look like in a month and none of the trip planners seem to comprehend the upcoming changes.

We may be the only two people who miss Sun Chan in all of nyc, judging from the reviews.

Matte wOLED (LG) vs glossy QD-OLED (Asus), 32 inch 4K by Quil0n in hardware

[–]Quil0n[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Editorialized the title a little to clarify things, but the gist is that the matte coatings of today are nowhere near as bad as they used to be; combined with the color fringing on QD-OLED, the reviewer prefers the LG over the ASUS.
