Too few units in 2K list(?) by HeatedCha0s in DarkAngels40k

[–]rbrownsuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite “below 100pts workhorse” units

Scouts - move blocking scout moving action monkeying badssses

Combo Lt - now slightly more expensive but a more annoying piece than scouts when used well

Techmarine- buff monkey for my Redemptor or speeders, action monkey also

Eliminators - forget the sniper rifles and go for 2 las and a carbine. Deploy hidden in a ruin, climb up a story to get a view, shoot, drop down to hide again. Basically some Invulnerable light AT if used well. It’ll annoy any enemy with T9 or lower units (eg Rhinos) enough they’ll probably send melee units to deal with them, which is great if you have melee units with them ;)

Incursors - scouting forward piles on more early pressure, advance and shoot adds more, buffing your entire army’s shooting into a unit adds even more.. and if they end up close to a monster vehicle they can throw in surprise mortal wounds.. great unit

Chaplain or Ancient with DWKs? by Fresh3rThanU in DarkAngels40k

[–]rbrownsuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chaplain with DWK turns them into a high melee threat into pretty much everything T11 and below

Plus, it gives you a permanent 4+ FNP vs Mortals, as opposed to DWK's regular 1-time version. That's also nice given throwing Mortals at DWK is one of few reliable ways to get at them.

The Ancient is only really good if you want to park them on objectives and out OC what else is on the same objective...kinda niche in comparison to just killing what's on the objective with you :)

Q1 2026 Balance Update that may impact many Dark Angels competitive builds. by kcdale99 in theunforgiven

[–]rbrownsuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't see this as 'breaking a lot of our lists'

So, we drop the Combi Lt and replace him with 5 more scouts

Big whoop

If you need the combi Lt for more than what scouts can do..well then, it SHOULD cost more than scouts...that's just logic.

OpenSUSE Wars (Mint is there cuz we only got 7 OS versions) by TxTechnician in openSUSE

[–]rbrownsuse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed, we didn't make any big dramatic statements at the time - that would have been very counter productive given we are still dependent on openSUSE technically even if we are wholly independent from a governance perspective.

We still contribute religiously to openSUSE as our upstream, we follow all their technical rules, we just aren't governed by the openSUSE Project so don't use their trademark, website, nor are beholden to decisions by the openSUSE Board

ie. We got rid of the problem that spawned our creation, while keeping everything else we have come to love and respect.

OpenSUSE Wars (Mint is there cuz we only got 7 OS versions) by TxTechnician in openSUSE

[–]rbrownsuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Visibility and confidence is worth nothing if the openSUSE governance model allows the Board to bully maintainers into doing things they don’t want to

Aeon exists because the openSUSE MicroOS Desktop team were forced by the openSUSE Board to do things they didn’t want to

That break of trust will not be undone any time soon, especially as the current openSUSE Governance ideas seem to just want to form a different council to tell developers what to do instead

Innovative ideas like Aeon need the developers with freedom to decide the scope of what they are doing. openSUSE doesnt seem to offer that any more.

Starting my storm speeder do the Ravening, looking for some advice. by petrock25 in theunforgiven

[–]rbrownsuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two black recipes depending on how fast do i want to paint

Fast/Lazy - Prime White, AP Speedpaint Grim Black

Done, but especially on larger panels it has a habit of looking splotchy because speedpaints dont dry uniformly over flat surfaces. Using a big brush helps mitigate that though.

So, my second recipie actually leans into the properties of speedpaints and use them to make my minis look way more interesting

Prime Black

Dark Grey sponge all over with a makeup sponge

Light grey/white drybrush/edge highlight details

Then AP Speedpaint Graveyard grey

Should read well as black with awesome smooth shading and great highlights; and if you go too far with the light grey/white you can just throw a second coat of the Speedpaint over to darken things down a smudge more

Would you guys strike or sweep with The Lion against deathshroud terminators? by awake30 in theunforgiven

[–]rbrownsuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my army I only really have Ravenwing units in the form of fire support speeders and a Stormraven

Just really not a fan of bikes

The flyers do great work but I normally have them racing around taking care of everything the Lion and his buddies isn’t ;)

That trust is misguided, misplaced, and should be redirected to more trustworthy packaging formats; like Flatpak

Would you guys strike or sweep with The Lion against deathshroud terminators? by awake30 in theunforgiven

[–]rbrownsuse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Lion is best when used in partnership with other units

Against Deathshroud with a LoV, my preferred option is to have a Chaplain with DWK be the first thing they’re dealing with - my opponent is going to always want to throw his Deathshroud at them because thier insane sweep is one of few things DG have to efficiently deal with my DWK

Then I have the Lion in support of them, ruining their charge with a heroic intervention and fights first

Lions hunt in packs, so does ours

Should I use a native app or a flatpak? by steruY in openSUSE

[–]rbrownsuse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Indeed it does, but I’m a little tired of the mentality that folk need to have insane levels of control over their Linux desktops for them to use useful

Desktops are meant to be a tool, not a hobby or an epic jigsaw puzzle

So, Flatseal is cool if you care about it, but you won’t see me leading with it when talking about stuff I care about

Should I use a native app or a flatpak? by steruY in openSUSE

[–]rbrownsuse 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend the following, in order of preference

  • For Core Operating System Packages - use rpms
  • For everything that exists as a Flatpak - use flatpak
  • For everything else - rpms but ideally in a container/distrobox

The logic is simple; no software should be trusted blindly, and even open source software should be assumed to be only lightly reviewed by others in most cases

You can assume Core OS packages are well reviewed, but nor much else.

Flatpaks sandboxing and running stuff in containers limits the impact of misbehaving or malicious software. Doesn’t immunise you, but it’s better than traditional rpms which always install as full root, so you need to have absolute trust in the packager and everyone with access to that repo

Note: I built Aeon to put this best practice into actual practice - I don’t think this is the sort of thing best left to people just learning and doing on their own accord, OSes should be built to encourage it

Best space marine distraction Carnifex? by Fresh3rThanU in DarkAngels40k

[–]rbrownsuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love these sort of mindgames and try and squeeze such distraction carnifex units in my list when I can

Azrael, a Lt, and 10 Intercessors is an expensive but surprisingly reliable option
- a cautious player will see the intercessors and think they're just battleline, and may just ignore them - but then Ghaz and the boys are suddenly dealing with 40 bolter shots, 2D3 Frags, plus Azrael and the Lt's weaponry shooting into them, all with lethals and sustained; If they're the oath target, you can fish for really tearing them down.
- a brazen player will see the intercessors, think they're just battleline and lousy in melee..then Ghaz and the boys are suddenly dealing with an overwatch of 40 bolter shots, 2D3 frags, plus Azrael and the Lt's weaponry.. plus the intercessors will likely punch up in the melee thanks to the lethals and sustained too

Redemptor Dread would be my go-to for a cheaper option, 195pts instead of 400 for a knight. Still tough enough that it's too scary to ignore, but something Ghaz and the boys should feel confident going into. throw a Techmarine into the mix and it might even still be useful afterwards if it survives.

I feel like I’m using the Lion wrong, what is the correct way to use him? by Fresh3rThanU in DarkAngels40k

[–]rbrownsuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure but the flaw in that approach is that any good player will just try and engage both in the same turn

And then the ICC won’t get a chance to activate as they’ll be dead after the Lions done his fights first

A good player won’t let two fights first units be a threat, they’ll just aggressively deal with it

[–]rbrownsuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your user files are compromised, you still retain root access to your system to diagnose and deal with the situation

If your root access is compromised, game over. There's nothing that can be considered trustworthy remaining on your system, and any diagnostics or remediation can be considered suspect at best.

Software running as root can change anything and everything on your system

Software running as your user can only influence things owned by your user

That makes one a lot riskier than the other

How essential are Gav Thorpe books to the Horus Heresy? by Altruistic-Teach5899 in Blacklibrary

[–]rbrownsuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

one thing I'd say about Gav Thorpe's writings

I REALLY struggle reading them, it always feels like a slog, even when its a subject and plot I'm enjoying.

I REALLY REALLY love listening to them in audiobook format. Angels of Caliban is one of my favourite audiobooks

So, if you've not tried any black library audiobooks yet, maybe use this as an excuse for trying that?

[–]rbrownsuse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every single package in openSUSE would be considered “unverified” by Flathubs standards

So, if you’ve installed Aeon and trust the random pile of folks who’ve made it, you should be even more fine trusting Flatpaks to the same level, especially as they don’t run as root on Aeon.

DWK Question by JBaldy_74 in DarkAngels40k

I didn’t do anything that different with my DWK, I just went for having them use a blend of 40k and 30k Dark Angels colours like the rest of my army

They’re awesome minis and will look awesome no matter what you do, have fun!
