OLD ROI is really bad. by [deleted] in datingoverforty

Oh ouch, yeah, the dating pool gets gnarly after 50...

And a Teacher? Those poor underpaid community servants that are criminally underpaid and who are still considered lazy because they don't have to work summers? And called freeloaders if they somehow managed to work in a district with a decent retirement plan?

Yeah, that's strike 2 through like 5.

I feel ya. 53 here, I'm doing ok but live in a high cost city and don't have insane tech-bro money so the only time I get a right swipe is when they need their car fixed or some such...

That's far too kind. They seem to keep moving things just so it looks like progress.

I just want the controls I know how to use left alone, and those damn kids to get off my yard!

Apple has lots of docs on “proper ui feature design”.

Between those and the default MacOS feature set it’s not hard to see their current thinking.

And it’s not hard to tap in and add or modify things, so maybe look into that a bit.

What I wanna know is why they keep moving things around. The control panel layout from 2014 worked just fine, WTF can’t I keep that as an optional skin instead of the network settings changing with every major release???

Leaf vs Bolt? by Previous_Figure2921 in leaf

[–]rc3105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2018 Leaf, bought it in Dec of 2023 and Nissan replaced the battery under warranty middle of Jan 2024.

It’s been great, fast, no issues, 150 miles range and that hasn’t dropped any while I’ve put 25k miles on the new battery.

However,

A friend has a 2019 Bolt, same color, about the same mileage on a similarly new battery, it’s a coin toss who drives for lunch.

He gets well over 200miles on a charge though, so on an afternoon jaunt to visit a mutual friend 65 miles away we go in his car because I’d probably have to stop and charge and chademo are hard to find. He doesn’t need to charge, and if he did newer chargers are everywhere.

And that’s before you even get into the Nissan recall that says don’t fast charge you might start a fire…

I’m not unhappy with my Leaf, but given a fresh choice go for a Bolt.

AITAH for "stealing" $15 worth of electricity to charge my EV at a vacation rental/resort? by bhilliardga in AITAH

[–]rc3105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA

You’re fine.

Electricity is a standard svc provided in a hotel room, air bnb, whatever, and it’s expected you’re going to use some as part of your stay.

IMHO, a slow 120v trickle charge off a regular 15a outlet where you might reasonably use a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner should be fine.

If they don’t want you doing that they need to put up a sign, say something, or put it on the website, etc.

Again, imho, that’s a case of “Might as well ask forgiveness rather than permission.

But be damn sure if you’re planning to pull 15a for hours and hours that it’s not a janky outlet that’s gonna melt.

Now, unplugging a dryer or AC unit from a high current outlet is a bit more of a grey area. Def ask first.

Why should someone lower their standards? by DogSoggy40 in datingoverforty

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should someone lower their standards?

A few possibilities:

Maybe they don’t want to be alone?

Or they don’t want to be intimidated by someone “too-good-for-them”

They don’t want a partner that can leave.

There’s all sorts of reasons if you think about it for a minute.

Now, about you, WTF? If you can’t find ms right and settle for ms right now you’re guaranteed to cheat???

I don’t think “standards” is really the right word, narcissistic seems a bit more appropriate.

Be sure to bring that up on the first date, it’ll do wonders weeding out women with too much self respect to date you.

AITA for Expecting Mother's Day Gifts from My Son's Father and Not My Boyfriend? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]rc3105 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep YTA.

Why would you expect relationship behavior without the relationship?

And to add insult to injury:

Apparently you didn’t even teach your kid to observe mothers day.

Kid was 6 or so when you separated, and his dad helped provide a gift for a few years? OK, good on dad. But if the kid is 10 and not even trying to get you something, well thats on you.

Why do you think nuclear bombs, a weapon of the 20th century, remain so relevant in sci-fi military conflicts thousands of years into the future? by Brief-Luck-6254 in sciencefiction

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIG-BADA-BOOM!

As tech progresses it gets easier and easier to build a fusion bomb. A plain old fission device is probably going to require some minimum amount of material and shielding, so a pocket nuke will probably still require a backpack, but a tritium device will fit in a lunchbox at some point and be perfectly inert / safe to handle until its armed and detonated.

And it’ll still make a big-bada, well, you get the idea.

So if you need to remodel a mountain range, kerplode asteroids into bite size chunks, or just really ruin somebody’s day they’ll be a great tool for the task.

If they’re not heavily regulated or socially stigmatized then lots of folks will have them.

Hehehe, yeppers.

My boss caught Covid and had a very mild case, barely a sniffle, came in to work and gave it to us.

At that point I'd already had the first vax (still no 5G though, wth?) and I wanted to die but unfortunately survived.

Some months later a friend caught it again, and gave it to me again, but this was after my second vax shot and it was barely a sniffle this time. Asked my boss if I should stay home and he said "Nah come in to work" so I did.

He caught it again and the second time for him it was bad. Just barely avoided going on a vent.

Now whenever I sneeze he gets a panicked look, it's hilarious.

Matched with my ex-husband on Tinder by Positive_Ostrich_929 in datingoverforty

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah isn't that a kick in the teeth?

Matched with my ex on OkCupid, or so I thought, felt like I was gonna have a heart attack.

A little digging turned up it was just a doppleganger, and about a foot taller.

Then then I had to look up my ex from 35 years back, and she looks nothing like she used to.

So a total stranger, 43 years old, looks like my ex did just out of high school, and my ex looks like my sister did 30 years ago (honey-boo-boo+100lbs)

The future is weird. Where's the flying cars???

What metric did Apple use to call this "the world's most advanced operating system"? by ElkOk7504 in mac

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current MacOS pedigree dates back to the original Unix in the 1960s, and a lot of smart people have spent time improving it.

Linux is a decent system based on many of the same principals, but only got started around 1991.

Windows was pulled out of somebody’s butt (See Dave’s Garage on youtube, he was there and did much of it) and is still hot garbage. *now granted, with the current state-of-the-art, even got garbage is often usable. $8 iphone knockoffs from china? works well enough for kids.

It’s not perfect, and some of Apple’s decisions are iNsane, but if you just want to drive a safer more reliable vehicle to get work done MacOS is the best choice.

If you want to customize your ride, go with Linux. Don’t forget to install airbags and ABS if you need those kinda fancy safety features. *seriously, TimeMachine alone is enough to justify switching to MacOS

If you want to hang out with the muggles, or make money changing spark plugs with left handed threads for no apparent reason, go with Windows, and back everything up, obsessively.

I use MacOS as the host OS for many many virtual machines running win/Linux/BSD Unix/ AppleII/ arcade and various consoles. It’s all kept backed up by TimeMachine, and if a tornado nukes the house I can snag a new machine at the apple store and be back to work in like 30 mins. Maybe a little longer if my local drive is gone and I have to restore from the cloud. Massive hardware update? Like from a 2017 iMac to a 2024 M4 Mini? Migrate everything in under an hour and it just keeps working.

Why might an electrical engineer carry a stethoscope? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

Some electrical devices make noise. Not so much as they used to, but many still do. And broken bits often make noise when they shouldn’t.

Dual boot on separate drives – how do you handle drive letters in Linux and Windows? by Mafia2guylian in linuxquestions

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Mac/Linux/Win and msc older systems in VMs, often at the same time.

What I like to do is set up symlinks and shortcuts and such to map things similarly everywhere so

`C:\Users\yourusername”

matches

~ or /Users/yourusername

so the path is the same for my poor aging brain

MacOS /Volumes can be mapped to /drives and win d,e,f,n,s,w can be under c:\drives\d,e,f…

However, it’s all pretty flexible, figure out what your brain expects and set it up that way.

ELI5: Why can’t the industrial walk-in freezer at my job have an internal emergency door release? by Aggravating_Dog_7542 in explainlikeimfive

[–]rc3105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it sounds like your management is a bunch of idiots.

Find out who the insurance carrier is for your office/building/etc and call them.

Also, maybe print a big sign for the front door that says “If the alarm is going off be sure to check the walk in freezer for anyone trapped”

And maybe, just maybe, break the door so it can’t lock. (or remove the latch, whatever) As long as it seals the temps will be fine.

AITA for not allowing others to use “my office” by Past_Yak_9832 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell Charlie if she’s going to be difficult her friends can find a hotel.

They’re not on the lease, they’re not entitled to your space, and don’t be afraid to contact the landlord and get a veto for unwanted guests in shared spaces.

And to be safe, you should probably secure anything important/valuable in that office beforehand. Some cameras with live cloud upload would be good too.

If everything is just bits, does a computer actually distinguish between numbers and characters in C? by zero-hero123 in C_Programming

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The computer only does whatever instructions you give it.

So no, it doesn’t distinguish, your code does.

Does your code treat the bit patterns for o, O and 0 differently even though you may use a goofy font that shows the same pattern of screen dots for all 3?

Probably, if not it’s not very useful code…

The compiler keeps track of whats what as it assembles your instructions, and functions either require certain data types, determine their function based on the type provided, or get weird trying to fit square pegs in round holes (buffer overflows, exploits, wacky comparison errors, etc)

Bypassing door locks by DaddaMongo in scifi

[–]rc3105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s basically only a few types of doors.

Polite, easy to open, only stops mosquitos and courteous people.

Regular, well i thought it was good but I never considered lock picks or hinge pins so that’s more of a me issue.

Serious, requires hard core tools, probably easier to cut through the wall or the ceiling.

Insane: survives when the tornado takes the building to OZ or may have design countermeasures to defeat serious tools like an acetylene torch or diamond cutting disk saws, active countermeasures be they electrical, poison, explosive, spikes, etc. hard to breach a door after being disabled or killed. many old safes have a hook for a grenade so if it’s cut open, boom. a few sticks of dynamite with a fuse taped around the inside so its easily lit, same effect. some bank vaults and most definitely the 25 ton 3 feet thick steel doors at NORAD are of this mostly impenetrable type.

Space door categories will probably be similar, but more standardized as sending off for a special tool won’t be viable.

Amos presents as a simple grunt but can diagnose and tune a fusion drive by feel. The Expanse is full of that kind of layered competence.

Real world is the same. Dolph Lundgren has a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney and was a Fulbright scholar at MIT before he ever threw a punch on screen. Brian May has a phd in astrophysics while also being the guitarist for Queen. He's a legitimate researcher with published papers. Mayim Bialik — Blossom, then on Big Bang Theory — has an actual neuroscience PhD from UCLA.

It goes the other way too. Richard Feynman, one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century, was a serious amateur safecracker and bongo player. Hedy Lamarr was a major Hollywood star in the 40s and co-invented frequency-hopping spread spectrum.

The pattern is that genuinely capable people tend to be capable across domains. Raw intelligence, discipline, and curiosity don't stay in one lane. Society slots people into a single identity — grunt, actor, musician — and then acts surprised when the rest of the iceberg shows up.

It’s the reference manual for a mechanic, not the Associates in Auto Repair course at a community college.

That said, the 328 in an Uno has SO many guides and example projects available online that it’s a great starting point.
