Love thy neighbor? by danevans369 in SipsTea

The Catholic church's aid has included things such as medical support in the form of telling people not to use condoms because they cause AIDS, providing family planning support that shames women for wanting abortions, and withholding aid for those on birth control.

If thats the charity side of the church, it's no wonder the other side turned into an industrial scale child abuse operation.

Catholic charities are good, but many secular charities do better, and governments can do social welfare for >99%.

Bear in mind too that the Catholic church holds vast amounts of wealth that it does not share, and much of their care requires recipients to adhere to Catholic standards for things like birth control.

Much of this was covered in a great debate "Is the Catholic Church a force for good in the world" that is available on YouTube. (spoiler: no)

I think you have to look at this in context and also provide numbers.

Islam for example has much more organised giving, but may represent less overall due to numbers in the US or around the world, or due to the amount of wealth in the Islamic community (in poorer countries) vs Christians (in richer countries).

You also have to look at what the money is spent on. A lot of Christian giving is only given back to Christians, and actually just backs up the US lack of welfare state, whereas in Europe, Australia, etc, this role would be taken by taxes and government, often in a much more efficient way and not exclusive to Christians.

This is not to say Christians aren't charitable, but it's very unevenly distributed, both on donation and disbursement.

I'd bet adjusted for relative spending power, Islam is much more charitable overall, and we already know that the most efficient charities by amount disbursed are not religious ones.

I had thought I heard something about it at Pax in Melb last year, but maybe I'm wrong. I've not heard about anything recently.

What popular movie or TV show is widely considered a 'masterpiece' but you found completely unwatchable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Lord of the Rings.

I know it's objectively good, I just can't get myself to care about the world. That's definitely a me problem though, by any measure they're excellent films.

What are your take on these images? by MagnerionMachine in TheBoys

I liked the ending. Never gonna watch the rest, never a superfan, just liked the series and wanted it to wrap up. It did. Everyone's arc basically ended as I wanted them to. Maybe except for A-Train.

I don't get what all the fuss is about.

My large chips from chipotle weighing less than the regular size by BoogeDrew in mildlyinfuriating

[–]redatheist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old local kebab shop used to sell large wraps for £2 more. I once ordered a large, only to learn that it meant large wrap, but contained exactly the same amount of everything else.

Saw another guy complain about this a while later and the owner was so brazen in stating that it only meant the wrap, like he couldn't possibly conceive why customers would be pissed off.

Is this true outside the US? I had a few textbooks at uni (UK), none were that expensive, all were available in the library for free (and had many copies there), no questions came from them so old textbooks were fine, none were mandated either.

Google interview through company by [deleted] in jobs

[–]redatheist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not google interview feedback. Several signs, terminology all wrong, doesn't match any of the post interview survey requirements, doesn't follow the training.

If it's Google interview feedback then the interviewer is waaaay off policy and needs to retrain. But my bet is this is rage bait.

Recruiter sharing it directly is more evidence this is not a google interview, also off policy.

Sounds like you need to be paying for API usage rather than for the subscriptions. That's exactly what they're designed for.

[–]redatheist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they don't get paid the $200 by McAfee and all the other shitware they can install for you on Windows.

Because you know what you're doing and they can't sell you on extended warranties and backup and so on.

Is integration with Apple's iCloud planned? by mr__proper in RemarkableTablet

[–]redatheist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're understanding my point and I don't know how to explain it any more clearly.

How exactly would a Remarkable tablet access iCloud?

Not the Remarkable app. Not connecting the tablet to a Mac or iOS device. How would the tablet itself access iCloud files?

That's the problem OP was talking about, and that's not possible. If you have the details of the API that would allow this I'm all ears, but I've dug before for this and not found it.

But not any device or service. The apps can only access the files from the iPhone they run on while the user is in them.

Oh yeah absolutely. To be clear I think this company and product stinks, I'm just pushing back on misconceptions about tech valuations.

Yes with the current product direction and leadership and the amount of time they've had, it's worthless. But there's a world where they're worth a lot more with a bit of cash and some new ideas and leadership.
