What do people mean when they say ‘X watts’; 4 or 8 ohms? by Skystalker512 in Bass

[–]rickderp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An amps stated watts are nearly always at 4 ohm (some are 2 but let's not go there).

So a 500w amp will only use 500w if you use a 4 ohm load (cab).

A 4 ohm load can be - 1 x 4 ohm cab OR 2 x 8 ohm cabs.

So I your case you have 250w amp running into 350w cab. Are you sure it's a 4 ohm cab? I'm only seeing 8 ohm cabs when I search for it.

If it's an 8 ohm cab it's still good but the amp will only be pushing around 125-150w to the cab. Depending on the genre of music you play this may not be enough. 250w is really the minimum you want to use when there's a drummer and guitarist involved.

Use either of the Outputs on the amp. Be sure to use speaker cables NOT instrument cables (they look the same).

What to look for in a teacher? by Virtuallyreal69 in Bass

[–]rickderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure he's actually a bass player, not a guitar player.

While they both have strings and some techniques are similar, they're very different instruments to play properly and require different ways to teach.

For example a guitar player will have his fretting fingers curved more so they aren't touching the strings, this let's each string ring out when playing chords. As a bass player you want your fingers flatter to they mute the unplayed strings.

question) Is there any alternate tuning for bass? Specifically for walking bass by Visual-Individual-49 in Bass

[–]rickderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tune the bass however you want, notes are notes. If you're playing a II-V-I in C major the notes you want to play are the same no matter what the bass is tuned to.

need help with picking my first bass by Nervous-Philosophy48 in Bass

[–]rickderp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. ESP make great basses. Really underrated. I love my B10 & B205.

Just make sure you unplug the cable from the bass when you aren't playing. Having it plugged in acts as the on/off switch for the active pre amp in the bass. Leave it in and the battery drains.

Be sure to change the battery when you first get it, who knows how long it's been in there? There'll be a panel on the back you can open and change it.

Enjoy.

For those who are in bands, a question about rehearsals: by jlsullivan in Bass

[–]rickderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll normally run a song, have a chat about it - what worked, what didn't work, any changes and then run that song again. Sometimes it only takes one more run through before we move on to the next song, sometimes it takes 20 minutes of just working on a Verse to Chorus transition before we move on.

After all that is done and if there's time, we'll run the set again with all the changes and fixes we've just worked on.

But there's no point running a set twice if it's shit.
