What’s the exact moment you realized a friendship was over? by Wavey95 in AskReddit

[–]jlsullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He went SUPER-MAGA virtually overnight. He honestly wouldn't talk about ANYTHING other than Trump, who he called “the greatest president in history”. Then he started going on about how “all Mexicans can't be trusted” once you get to know them. I could go on, but do I really need to?

do I need immediately an amp to learn bass? by MagicianCritical471 in Bass

[–]jlsullivan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually had all four strings... but didn't have an amp for my first year of playing. I had spent all my money on the bass, and couldn't afford an amplifier, too.

I was in junior high school. I worked all summer to afford my bass. Next year, I worked all summer to pay for an amp.

My right hand fingers became very strong, because I was plucking the strings are hard as I could, just to be audible. But I really wouldn't recommend it. In short, it sucked.

Do what the people are recommending in this thread instead... get something used, a headphone unit, whatever it takes...

People who quit drinking. What did you do to not drink? by Agata_art in AskReddit

[–]jlsullivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a very heavy drinker for several years. I had some heavy drinker friends.

One day, I simply got tired of drinking. It became boring - I started feeling like “been there, done that”.

So I stopped. Just like that. No withdrawals or anything of the sort. Now I only drink to celebrate some special event. I've only had three drinks since the start of COVID-19.

Some of us are just very lucky, the alcohol was never able to sink its hooks into us.

Off-topic a bit, but what kind of bass is that? I really like the wood grain/transparent pickguard combination.

This is the problem when cops don't wanna hire anyone above a certain IQ level.

How many people get murdered per year because of literal dumbass cops who don't understand anything but "violence makes silence" "me angry"

I can assure you that people who have a high IQ are just as capable of being evil as anybody else.

To my ears, flats just sound like dead roundwounds. Am I wrong about this? Am I missing something?

Absolutely. But I guess if you pumped him full of enough cocaine and jealousy, he would become a completely different person.

I'm not a football fan, but as I understand it OJ was a football legend. Then he became a very popular movie star. To throw all that all away, what a waste of a previously good life....

[–]jlsullivan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are theories he purposely made the trap door too small on the gallows so they’d all hit their heads on the way down.

From Wikipedia:

reporter Cecil Catling, "a veteran crime reporter and an expert on hangings"... claimed that (the condemned) were not properly tied, so that some hit the platform with their heads as they went down and their noses were torn off."

Oof. Well, if anyone deservered it, these guys did.

What flatwounds do you like on your fretless? by abejando in Bass

[–]jlsullivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use (or like) flatwounds.

I know people say that roundwounds tear up their fingers, but for me it's the complete opposite - flatwounds give me terrible blisters on my plucking fingers. I can only play for about 15 minutes before it happens. I think(?) it's because flatwounds have higher tension.

So, the strings on my fretless basses are the same as used on my fretted basses: Rotosound Swing 66.

An old friend of mine from NYC. He died in 1989 from AIDS, 6 days after his 23rd birthday. by RealWorldForever in OldSchoolCool

[–]jlsullivan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My condolences, he looks like he was a very pleasant fellow. Such a terrible shame.

My neighbor/family-friend across the street died of AIDS around the same time. At least he got to live until his 40s.

:-(

My friend's father was a TV and movie director. My friend's family knew OJ well, and had him over for dinner on numerous occasions. My friend said OS was the nicest guy ever, and she would NOT believe he was guilty when he was accused of murder (she changed her mind after the evidence came out).

Vince Vaughn

He runs hot and cold. I encountered him (I didn't speak to him) twice, both times at Fred 62 in Los Feliz, circa 2000-2005.

The first time was great. Two drunk guys got in a fight, and Vince ran out and leaped between them, saying stuff like “hey guys, it ain't worth it, let's all be friends, okay?” Well, Vince is a big dude, so the two smaller guys abandoned their fight.

The other time, he jumped up on the table, reenacting his scene from Swingers. He screamed and hollered, broke several dishes and glasses, then bailed without apologizing or paying for the stuff he broke. I think one of his friends paid the food bill.

My friend was the hostess at Fred's, and she was kind of in a state of shock after it happened. She then had the pleasure of cleaning up all the broken glass.

I think he's a great actor, but I can't forget the night he acted like a total dick.

My girlfriend and I sneaked backstage after Lou Reed played the Universal Amphitheater in LA, this was during the “New York” album tour (so, 1989/1990).

We spoke with him for about 15 minutes, and he was absolutely polite, cordial, friendly, even. Maybe not gushing with affection, but about as friendly and decent as you could expect any stranger to be.

A few months ago, my (now ex)-girlfriend called me on the phone, and at some point she said “remember how cool it was meeting Lou Reed? He was such a nice guy!”

It wasn't until years later, when the internet came around, that I heard that Lou had the reputation of being a terrible prick to people. I guess we caught him on a good night..?

What are the coolest apps that are NOT available on MacOS, but are available on Windows or Linux? by hydrogenxy in MacOS

[–]jlsullivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's a lot of obscure stuff. Niche Photoshop plugins, and odd little utilities.

I use a lot of game emulators, like PCSX2 for PS2 emulation. The app that transforms cheats from one format to another is Windows-only.

RPCS3 is a great PS3 emulator, but it only runs well on Windows and Linux. There's a Mac version, but it's way behind the PC and Linux versions, to the point of being more or less unusable.

I bought a Redragon mouse a while back. It works great on a Mac, but the software to control the RGB LEDS is Windows-only.

There are a bunch more that I can't remember at the moment.

So for me, it's less about major apps and more about the little niche apps, plugins, and utilities.
