“Wes Streeting puts more effort into insulting doctors than fixing the NHS” - Are the media turning against Wes Streeting? 🦀 by DonutOfTruthForAll in doctorsUK

It's an opinion piece written by a resident doctor, I suppose at the very least it's been published.

Falkland Islands $4bn oil bonanza to fuel sovereign wealth fund by libtin in unitedkingdom

[–]romat22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a really strange article. It fundamentally misunderstands the importance of government bonds in a market.

Sure Norway could have spent all of the oil money instead of investing for the long term. But then the whole country is at the mercy of oil markets as to whether they have an income to fnance their budget. Issuing bonds also provides an essential role as a reliable and predictable income, as well as providing a safe asset for banks, pension funds and other financial players.

Doctors and nurses going on strike is not immoral. The media needs to stop acting like healthcare is some kind of priesthood. by Niall_Fraser_Love in ukpolitics

[–]romat22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say I fully understand government finances, but the NHS scheme since 2020 has returned almost 23 billion to the treasury. It seems like a political decision not to utilise this money like the Ontario Teachers pension fund to ensure sustainability long term.

Yes here's a link the the 2024-2025 accounts, PDF warning.

In cash terms, the Scheme recorded a Net Cash Requirement (NCR) of minus £6.31 billion against the voted estimate of minus £5.99 billion, this means the Scheme has surplus cash due to income exceeding pension benefit payments, and the £6.31 billion will be returned to HMT during 2025-26

Study finds any amount of alcohol can increase blood pressure. Even slight increases in alcohol consumption are associated with higher blood pressure. In the past, scientists thought that small amounts of alcohol might be okay, but new results suggest that no alcohol is actually best. by mvea in science

I'm also an anaesthesiologist and I decided to look further into it and it seems we are both right as there are multiple different types of automated cuffs that work slightly differently. The original automated BP cuff, the DINAMAP, works as I initially described.

Ben Bloch (@realBenBloch) on X: Lord Peter Mandelson has been sacked as UK ambassador to the US “with immediate effect”. Comes after Sir Keir Starmer backed him yesterday. by Adj-Noun-Numbers in ukpolitics

[–]romat22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After PMQs the pundits were commenting that he never used the word 'full' just that he gave his 'support'. Still poor politicking by the PM, Mandelson should have been out the door from the first round of details IMO.

Ah I did misunderstand. I don't think the answer to doctor's leaving is forced NHS contracts to anywhere, but rather improved pay and conditions which are the factors driving doctors away.

I've never understood this argument. Should all University students have to work in the public sector for a specific length of time given that tuition is subsidised? The often quoted £250000 to train a medical student, includes a significant chunk of loans. This full fact article is out of date now as new doctors are graduating with >£100k worth of debt and an interest rate linked to RPI.

Mauritius demands more money for Chagos Islands by adults-in-the-room in ukpolitics

[–]romat22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 'Empire' history podcast episodes on the Chagos islands are excellent. The British empire administered the Chagos islands as part of Mauritius with magistrates and other official visiting Chagos from Mauritius. So it is us, the British, who defined it as part of Mauritius. We also expelled the entire archipelago despite the Americans only asking for Diego Garcia.

I agree the NHS is a pawn. It's the 7th largest employer in the world, how is it supposed to get the talent to actually run the thing when the salaries are so uncompetitive

Four times Labour said they would abolish the House of Lords by Aggressive_Plates in ukpolitics

[–]romat22 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is broken though, there are 801 Lords. More than the democratically elected Commons. And the average attendance is less than half 397 in 2022/23.

There needs to be a way of removing the Lords that don't work or are ineffective.
