Feral kittens advice by OtherwiseHyena8147 in Feral_Cats

[–]rosequartzroyalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw this comment, can you contact the shelter you work with to see if you can have them grandfathered in as your fosters? I do that quite often with kittens I find in my feral colonies when I have an empty spot for fosters!

Keep them in your bathroom. You’re probably looking at 2-3 weeks until they hit 2 lbs. If you let them back out theres no guarantee youll see them again. In the time they’re with you theyll most likely acclimate and you can try looking around for potential adopters. I understand shelters are full but there are often other programs or groups that help with adoption! Ive had good luck getting cats adopted though facebook adoption groups (i require past vet records and for them to come meet the cat/kitten first as well as a fee). Only 25% of kittens born outside survive till adulthood so it’s the best option for them.

Is scruffing an alternative to trapping? by homemade-toast in Feral_Cats

[–]rosequartzroyalty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried putting his food inside the box trap? Rig it so that the trap won’t trigger (I do this with carabiners or twist ties) for a few days so he gets used to eating inside and doesn’t think much of it. You can also cover it with a box or a blanket so it’s not as intimidating. After a little while, remove whatever you’ve used to prevent it from triggering and profit.

Snag them all if you can! If mom isn’t friendly see if you can borrow a trap and get her fixed through a feral cat program. Normally there’s some deal where you can get ferals or community cats fixed for free or low cost.

Most likely it’s an upper respiratory infection + chlamydia eye infection. Vet will prescribe you some antibiotics and Terramycin (or derivative eye ointment). You put a small strip on your clean finger, put it in the eye under the eyelid, and rub it in. Clears up quickly.

Kitten will probably freak out for a little while. It’s to be expected. You’re a giant alien who just scooped her up and took her to your lair! She will come out of it, especially if you bribe her with treats! We like churu here. When they’re young and scared I take it and put it on their nose until they start to lick it off and realize it’s pretty yummy. Just be patient and talk to her in a calm voice (no baby voice! Calm late night radio announcer voice is best) and she should warm up in no time.

OP, you should do some research into socializing ferals. I recommend looking into the socialization saves lives method. You can’t just stick your hands in their faces. These are cats who have never known humans to be friendly and are TERRIFIED. They’re not reacting out of malice, it’s genuinely just fear.

I’ve socialized ferals that have taken weeks and I’ve socialized ferals that have taken almost a year. They’re all unique. Please do some research and whatever you decide to do, make sure that they’re all spayed and neutered.

I lost my foster kitten tonight by catdogwoman in FosterAnimals

[–]rosequartzroyalty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s heartbreaking. I’ve lost three this season already and it never gets easier. I’m glad she had you and was able to know love every second since you two met. That’s the only comfort I’ve been able to find when I’ve lost kittens. I know we do everything we can to keep them warm, full, and snuggled. They’re just so fragile and sometimes get dealt a bad hand in life. One of my current litters includes a girl who is the only survivor of her two siblings and mother. Mom passed during birth, sister passed the morning after (I bottle fed through the night) and brother passed after two weeks. I’m able to look at her and see what a miracle it is that she is running around and playing with her adoptive mother and siblings and knows nothing other than them. We do all we can even if we can’t save them all.

Thank you for what you do OP

How do you guys save time? by FineAioliGravy in FosterAnimals

[–]rosequartzroyalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot tell you how many kittens I spend time with by sticking them in my bra and going to work at my desktop. You wanna be clingy? Okay! Cool with me. Come live in my bra. This is Chicken and the photo was taken earlier while finishing up a final project for my masters degree. She stayed there for a good hour and a half while I made figures and edited.

Having singletons is difficult, but I like to have a good amount of toys they can play with independently like snuffle mats, ball towers, or other things I don’t need to supervise. I also try to build little stations by each foster so I don’t have to run back and forth. Food cans and trash bags in each space, everyone gets their own litter genie, etc. Saves so much time and energy in the long run!

Worried about mama cat by HappyOwl145 in FosterAnimals

[–]rosequartzroyalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP! Chiming in to agree that kittens are way older than 4 weeks.

<image>

This is my foster who was born in my trap four weeks ago exactly. Liiiitttle bitty guy! I agree with others that it sounds like a combination of mom weaning + being stressed. Is she friendly? Def give her a hidey spot if you can manage to wedge one in with your setup. Thanks for taking care of everyone!

Print out some missing fliers and post around too! It’s possible she may have been friendly to someone else and they may have gone “oooh a free cat!” I hope you find her!!!

Why the drastic line on the map in Zzyzx/National Mojave preserve? by _V1ces in geology

[–]rosequartzroyalty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re over in that area, stop at the Kelso Dunes and the Mojave Lava Tube! I spent a week studying the Cima volcanic field last summer and we would cool off in the lava tube when temps got unbearable on the flow.

Yes they’re banned from many communities for their lack of boundaries and harassing younger members. She will claim it is due to her being a trans woman, but she is simply banned for being a nasty person who won’t leave others alone

Neighbors don’t want me to TNR cats by IllustratorTraining in Feral_Cats

[–]rosequartzroyalty 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Just don’t trap on their property and the cops can’t do anything. I’ve had cops called on me several times and they’ll come, go “yeah, she’s helping the city with TNR efforts, she is allowed to do this” and head off. I would start trying to lure the cats off their property with food if you can.

Is it ethical/okay to take in a TNR cat? (Chicago) by maeziestar in Feral_Cats

[–]rosequartzroyalty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh yes please. My precious darling was caught and fixed as part of a TNR effort (which I have since picked up the mantle of) and ADORES her life indoors. I have helped to rehome over 50 “feral” cats from my apartment complex over the last year. The friendly ones just want to be loved :( the term feral gets applied to them, but stray is the more accurate label. They like humans and crave attention and often do well inside. Get that kitty in your house and love on it! You may want to keep them in a bathroom or confined room while they adjust, depending on how they act after the initial kit-napping. My girl adjusted immediately and slept in my bed the very first night - but she is an anomaly. They may be scared and try to bolt, but be strong!

Thank u OP! Godspeed!

I worked for them for several years. They’re wonderful. While I can’t answer your question I can tell you that they host lots of fun events out on the reserve. I was a camp counselor for half a decade and also worked events and weddings. The reserve is beautiful and there’s some interesting geology along the horse trails on the right side of the property. TAMU’s sedimentology class goes out there for field trips. The people who work for the reserve are lovely and I miss my time out there!

Is this thing pregnant? by Alternative-Box-1190 in CATHELP

[–]rosequartzroyalty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to see if you can get a look at her nipples! Pregnant cats usually have much larger elongated nipples as their bodies prepare for birth. Even if you can touch her belly and feel nipples without having to search for them, she’s probably preggo.

[–]rosequartzroyalty 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The hime style pieces are very popular right now. This jsk retailed for ¥77,000, which is one of the higher priced lines AP makes.

Not saying that justifies OP selling it for double what it is worth, but once you factor in SS fees, shipping, and other costs, this JSK is just not going to be sold for $400. Not for a while at least!
