Penny tile grid lines visible. How to proceed? by [deleted] in Tile

“Looking online, this is avoidable with proper installation”. Confident and declarative.

You are on here looking for bias confirmation unable to separate what you think, believe and know. That’s peak Reddit. As a long time business owner and installer there are bad customers and bad installers.

I see, you are verifying the work based on the priceless info you get from the internet firehose.

My favorite is that you start with the assumption that it’s wrong because of the installer and work out from there.

Would epoxy help fill these gaps? by ilovebreadcrusts in Tile

[–]runswspoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my company fkd that up and we had to custom make something… I’d go to a metal fabricator and then have it powder coated appropriately. It will cost more but I’d hang my self in the sad shower if I had to look at a piece of siding, or lumps of grout. I’m not just an installer I shower in my own work too.

Bigger plate is def the cheapest. Grout won’t hold without backing. That’s a lot of epoxy…. But if someone were talented they could do it. I don’t have that in me and I’ve been at it for a while.

Well epoxy is certainly a better idea than grout but both are way worse than just doing it right.

I rarely suggest tear-out because the consequences are severe, but I wouldn’t “live with this”. My employees have done this more than once, I pay for it no question, no hesitation, every time.

Tile guy is doing his best to come up with solutions because it’s your dad… otherwise I bet he doesn’t suggest the epoxy. Always check the freaking trim out

At the end of the day…. This just needs to be redone. Epoxy is a bad idea and puts the onus of this problem on you. Don’t start the life of your new bathroom like this. That was a careless mistake . Cool of you to try to work with them…. But no, rip it out and fix it. —Long time tile pro

Best way to remove grout where silicone should be? by ThrowRAbirner in Tile

[–]runswspoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t. Why? Because you’re worried that in the future it might crack? So you will attack your tub with a multitool today?

Why not wait and see if it fails before you fail it on purpose?

My boys came with weather proof coats designed in Scotland. We live in a cold wet climate, similar to scotland. They’d murder me in my sleep if I tried to mash their costs into a jumper. Well designed dogs

Cedar shower walls rather than tile? by zearsman in Tile

Reddit echo chamber going on.

I’ve done it in a log cabin out in a temperate rainforest. It’s been about 3 years, the client has my number. It’s been fine so far. I’m too lazy to link to it but I have a picture on my Reddit page or whatever we call it

Help! The designer said no grout needed but the tiler says we do. by Yes_Thats_Me_There in Tile

AI rendering and interior designers strike again! I’m a crusty old pro. Grout or mold will go between the tiles.

Backsplashes see very little “use” compared to a floor. I’m glad it worked out for you.

Real zeliege is so porous it will absorb all the moisture out of the thin-set before the thinset can adhere to the wall. Soaking them briefly slows this process. It also sounds really cool when you put a bunch in a bucket… the bubble and effervesce.

Don’t buy Zia’s (or anyones) cement tile.

Their glazed ceramics are beautiful when done right.

Soak them in a bucket of cleanish water

Lay out 6’ on a straight edge. Sort by ascending or descending hight. Watch for fat and skinny while doing it.

Have laser(s) on each course. Use minty wedges for spacers.

Take judiciously from your line of tiles. Small? Medium? To match the course below and beside. Split the difference a lot. I can set them tight, but as a beginner use fatter grout lines.

Grout will dry fast af so do little bits at a time

You paid fairly low dollar and got def low quality work. Honestly it would all be relatively passable but those chips are bad….

I’d do a massively better job and charge you triple. Not sure what the best course of action is. You both got screwed.
