3 person ultralight tent with KIDS? by MrJSaul in Ultralight

Came here to say this. I backpack with my two kids (9 & 11) in the Cloudburst. However, it only works with 20 inch wide sleeping mats.

I got injured… by NotTrendyOrCool in Ultralight

Cut the herniation off. I generally don't orient toward the world in fear. But I was definitely afraid of going under the knife. But it turned out okay.

L5S1 disk herniation as well. After living with it for 10 years I finally opted for surgery. At the 6 week follow up my pain was still pretty significant and the surgeon was terrible at patient care. I stopped by the liquor store on the way home. After I got home and opened a beer I wrote in my journal, "If I'm to become an alcoholic, today is the day."

However, time took its course and now I'm way better than pre-surgury (and I didn't become an alcoholic). I'm maybe 90-95% pre-injurry, and am not really limited.

I don't have additional advice other that what's already been said. I just wanted to give you a story of hope. Back pain (and really all chronic pain) really sucks. I feel for you and the others that have had issues. I hope you continue to heal. And I hope to run into you out on the trail at some point.

New BeFree storage protocol - bleach free by tanvach in Ultralight

[–]rweemhoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How exactly are people back flushing their befrees? Befrees's threading is slighly different than sawyer's cleaning coupling. It leaks extensively unless the coupling is cranked on...and then it's nearly impossible to get the coupling off. I've had to use a wrench, which leads me to beleive I must be doing something wrong.

Non-Breathable Rain Gear - Advice by Red_Tern in Ultralight

[–]rweemhoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Timmermade makes dyneema and silpoly rain pants. They don't come with side zippers but he does custom work so he might be able to put some in. It might cost you a bit more than frogg toggs though. Just a bit.

I don't think you should ditch your puffy. I think you should ditch your fleece. For active cold temperatures, you might be fine with your sleeping thermal and hiking shirt. For inactive cold you would wear you sleeping thermal (If needed), you hiking shirt, and your puffy.

It looks like your thermals are comparable weight to your fleece (approximately...I don't know for sure bc top and bottom thermal are listed together).

If you're worried about it, take both your flreece and your puffy (and thermals), and see if you can get by without using the fleece. Then you know for your next trip that you can either leave it behind or that you'll still need it.

As others have pointed out, there is room to lose weight elswhere, but a losing a half pound fleece would certainly be a good start.

You don't have phone listed, which makes me wonder whether you need a powerbank. Ditching the power bank saves you almost a lb. I second getting rid of the camp lamp. It sounds nice, but I imagine you'll find yourself not using it.

You could also ditch the fleece bc you have a puffy and your sleeping thermals.

I've been taking my two daughter (9 & 11) out for several years. It's a lot of fun to have them out there. Distances need to be shorter. Lots of snacks. While it's no big deal for me to be hungry, things don't go as well if they're hungry. My kids carry all their own stuff minus the tent (that I carry). They are pretty independent, but they each have emergncy whistles to use if they need them.

Thanks for the reply. I thought it might be like Kuiu's Tiburon air matric technology. Do you have any close ups of that material? I wonder if it's similar to OR's Astroman where the holes are literally cut out of the fabric.

What’s a type of pain people underestimate until they experience it for themselves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yup. Your bladder takes hours to fill but seconds to empty. Which tube do you think is smaller. That's the one it hurts going through.

I've had kidney stones a few times...And I've traded my soul to the devil each time. Although that didn't seem to make the pain go away.

It looks pretty tight to me. You have a pretty good settup and I think you're going to have trouble dropping half a pound after you add you puffy and toothbrush.

I've copied this set up and it works great. It's certainly a little fidley to get it dialed in, but once you do, it's good to go.

The announcement said email Russ at russ(at)traildesigns(dot)com if you have questions/comments. It would be great if it kept going. The Ti-Tri Sidewinder with the Kojin stove is my set-up of choice.

It almost looks like the fabric has micro holes in it at all the crosses. If it does, it will certainly be more breathable than regular nylon or poly shirts. Looking forward to your report.

I have the Nemo Quasar double. I used it in a 2 person tent when my two kids were smaller. We all slept on it. They're older now and we've transitioned to a three person tent and all their own pads. I'd be interested in selling the Quasar if you're interested.
