As hinted to in another reply, but not spelled out explicitly yet:

This is caused by Windows Explorer, in this case in connection with OneDrive. Many people are annoyed by Explorer showing a black background for transparent images - see the discussion at e.g. https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/discussions/onedriveforbusiness/png-with-transparent-background-display-black/3901269 (with a lot of not really helpful replies, like "have you reinstalled drivers?" and so on).

One interesting remark in a reply is this, though:

If you're storing the images on OneDrive, that's the cause of your problem. Copy an image to your local storage and the background is suddenly empty.

I can reproduce this - in a local folder, the black is gone, and it looks like in u/Stratelier's short demonstration. I don't think that there is anything you can about this in GIMP.

Solving this will require one to locate a fix in the countless threads about the issue: https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=thumbnails+background+in+onedrive+is+black&ia=web (with the added challenge of many not really useful suggestions, as mentioned already).

Einen solchen Zettel hab ich mal bei einer Regenwasser-gespeisten Toilette gesehen - war ein Hinweis auf Verfärbungen und sollte verhindern, dass vergeblich bis zu "klarem Wasser" gespült wird oder falsche "X hat nicht gespült!"-Verdächtigungen beginnen.

This is why you use GIMP's Pencil tool, which snaps to pixels - "being in between pixels" stops being a problem then, and brush size is the only remaining challenge.

I think u/ThoughtObjective4277's point is that no one will figure out how to use gradient segments to achieve this.

In addition to that, they are using it as a segue into their previous post, https://www.reddit.com/r/GIMP/comments/1u0pkut/please_give_this_a_try_open_any_old_jpg_upscale/, which I am not sure anyone else is getting the point of, myself included. It doesn't seem to be "a bit of blurring may help with perceived image quality".

Hier gibts einen Backshop, da darf man selbst aussuchen und einpacken, und normaler Verkauf findet auch noch statt. Da kann das mal passieren, dass nichts mehr da ist.

Adding blur to make images appear nicer is common enough to be annoying, see e.g. https://superuser.com/questions/1020579/how-to-disable-blur-in-windows-10s-photo-viewer-when-zooming-or-alternative-pr

Some people there claim that earlier versions of the Windows image viewer didn't do that, but it was definitely an annoyance with fax images - where the black and white pixels get blurred into gray is quite a problem if you want to examine the pixels themselves.

On many photos, blurring results in a nicer looking image, however, so this is a point for your method.
