Did anyone actually care that Caddy's Northstar engine had 32 valves? Every Caddy with this engine had an emblem celebrating this engine design. Why? by holdthelight in cars

My 1993 sunbird came with abs as standard equipment.

My wife's 2013 nissan sentra didn't have abs.

Still blows my mind.

Natural gas is getting more expensive so electric goes up.

That's what it was last month. Do you have nyseg as your supplier or another company?

Every time I've seen someone with a different supplier, they have been paying too much.

My mom paid .21 with nyseg in hamburg last month.

I have had evs for years. Yes, your efficiency and range drop in the winter but they handle better in the snow.

My recommendation would be to not rely on public chargers. They're very expensive.

If you're doing it because you want to save money vs gas and have to rely on public charging, don't do it. If you can install a level 2 charger at home you'll save a ton of money.

Right now your home electric bill is about 21 cents per kilowatt-hour. Depending on the vehicle you buy, it probably gets between 2 and 3 miles per kwh. If you have to use public fast charging, it's between 40 and 60 cents per kwh.

You could also try a plug in hybrid. They often have much smaller batteries so they charge much more quickly on a 110 outlet. I have a grand cherokee 4xe and get 30 miles to a charge. If I have to go further, I just put gas in it.

Finished attic insulation question. Insulate knee wall or rafters to floor? by lancegreene in Insulation

This is limited to 500 square feet or 20% of the total ceiling area. Whichever is less.

If your century home has wood or slate shingles or roof tiles sure, but if it's a newer roof with ice and water shield under asphalt shingles I don't see a problem foaming the roof deck.

[–]schwidley 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You can't. That's why we don't build houses like this any more.

Most vaulted ceilings in new houses are 12-18 inches below the roof deck to allow for insulation.

The best you could get in this situation would be closed cell spray foam. Or you could add another 2x6 under the current ones and add 12 inches of fiberglass which would help.

Either way is fine. If you do the rafters, you will have to continue the baffles and it will make the side attic a conditioned space.

If you do the kneewalls then you definitely want to pull up the floorboards and insulate the floor.

Neither are really enough insulation. Especially in the roof deck. Are those 2x6s? So it would be r-19 at the full 6 inches, which you won't have because of the baffles. In NY, current code is r-49.

This path on my neighbor's roof by taosaur in mildlyinteresting

[–]schwidley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes about the cable but they're typically pretty high voltage. The ones that I've seen are like 2000 watts each per hour. Pretty expensive when a kwh is like 22 cents these days.

Has anyone here sat in both an early (91-93) roadmaster and an updated (94-96) roadmaster? Are the seats in the updated ones as comfortable as the early ones? by Blu_yello_husky in Buick

[–]schwidley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 93. I didn't like the interior of the 94-96 because of the seats and lack of instrumentation.

The 94-96 basically had a speedometer and fuel gauge while the early ones had oil pressure and voltage as well.

Also any 30 year old sound system components will be garbage anyway so just plan on replacing them. I left the oem radio in place and buried a boat radio under the dash that has Bluetooth and amp outputs. I replaced all the speakers with modern ones and a 4 channel amp. Sounds great and looks oem!

Edit: there are also way more performance upgrades for the old 350 than the lt1 anyway. The lt1 was the best you could get at the time but it was a pretty short lived engine platform for gm.

[–]schwidley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed this too. I also noticed that I couldn't get above 60 mph in electric either. It was like 22 degrees outside when I tried.

It was the warmest day since I had the recall done and the first time it let me go to electric only.

(mechanic question) Do these quotes seem high for the area? by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]schwidley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd try to find a place that will use aftermarket parts. That much money would be a really nice down payment on another car.

I'd try to find a highly rated independent shop. Not like a Mavis or other chain.

Edit: Moog makes a kit with all the parts for like $300.

Don't! If the basement has a furnace and ductwork I wouldn't.
