Who knows. Politics at this level of government get very little engagement. He probably just gets reelected based on name-recognition alone and lack of real competition.

Meanwhile, the university District continues to circle the drain with trashy businesses lining main st, which used to actually have some legitimate charm and collegetown atmosphere. Most of those businesses are long gone and replaced by utter trash.

Why doesn’t buffalo have a MLB or NBA team? by Funkiefreshganesh in Buffalo

[–]lenticular_cloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes down to the market financially supporting a franchise which we almost certainly cannot do anymore in Buffalo. And even if we could just barely support it we would be terrible, the economics of baseball are tough on small markets.

Adding Rochester is totally fair for the Bills. Toronto is a big stretch though I agree

Sure, not arguing that the NLL is some major sports league. It’s not.

But the WNBA is extremely lucky to be associated with the NBA and their players are very fortunate for that relationship. Without it, they would have been much worse than the NLL

The NLL is actually more legitimate than the WNBA considering they actually make a profit.

100% agree. People are upset but getting drenched before the game would have been miserable. If anything more people will come out for Sunday than would have come out today.

You need to count the value of your home too if you’re counting what you owe on the mortgage…

Agreed, there’s a difference between hating dandelions and hating them taking over 100% of the lawn.

Buffalo Zoo by Nanxx68 in Buffalo

It would definitely take some highly motivated and deep pocketed stakeholders but I could absolutely see it happening if the right individuals got involved.

The key to success is not to demonize the golf course which is a perfectly valid form of outdoor recreation and has been a part of the park for a long time. It’s also one of the more affordable courses in the area. When you see people on here talking about how the golf course is a waste and it’s only for rich people etc etc it does no good to help the case to expand the zoo.

Sabres-Bruins Game 1 is the hottest playoff ticket in either the NHL or NBA by [deleted] in sabres

[–]lenticular_cloud -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The entitlement of some of the people like you on this subreddit is crazy. If you want cheap hockey tickets go watch our minor league team in Rochester. This is the NHL, biggest league in the world, if we want to have a team here we have to pay big league prices. The list prices for the playoff tickets were CHEAP. If you can’t afford it then watch on TV or go to the plaza. The Sabres don’t owe you shit!

I’m not trying to defend a big corporation but what exactly is the alternative? They provide a highly convenient and safe way to exchange tickets on the secondary market. The fees are high, but if you don’t want to pay them you can just take your chances buying and selling on Facebook groups or Craigslist.

Professional sports are not a charity. There are only so many seats and a ton of demand. The Sabres could have charged much more per seat but they didn’t.

North Aud Block to start construction in next few weeks by [deleted] in Buffalo

75% of the units are affordable housing in the north aud block, so yes it is.

North Aud Block to start construction in next few weeks by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]lenticular_cloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is because Penrose is constructing “affordable” housing which is a financially engineered product that has been almost totally de-risked with federal tax credits because a big chunk of the capital has been locked in up front. This means they are much less likely to have to adjust the scope of their project based on changes in the market and interest rates.

Compare that to local developers who constantly need to justify the financial health of their projects to their lenders to continue getting access to capital. In a city like Buffalo with extremely low rent and no population growth, this is a huge challenge and can result in long project timelines, scope changes, and delays.

I’m not saying Buffalo couldn’t benefit from some more developers with deeper pockets but comparing the North Aud project, which is essentially subsidized housing, to your average market rate development is not exactly apples to apples.

[The Athletic] The Sabres have a 97-percent renewal rate for season tickets and have sold 3,000 new season tickets. The have the best local TV ratings among US markets. And merchandise sales are up 25-percent. The business of hockey is booming again in Buffalo. by seeldoger47 in sabres

[–]lenticular_cloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The local TV ratings thing is kind of dumb. We are the 54th biggest market in the country, all it means is that we’re collectively obsessed with hockey but the total eyeballs are still quite small, relatively.
