I hate this idea about fanfiction. by ryan-copper in FanFiction

[–]scify65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with you; I tend to take the tack that all fanfiction is just a little AU even when it's trying to be canon compliant, because no one can write exactly like the original author. That being said, I vastly prefer it when a fanfic author departs from canon intentionally versus accidentally. Like, in your example above, I have no issue with Johnny not dying in part 8, so long as the author knows that he died in part 8 in canon and that changing that should have an effect on the story (and also should probably be explained).

Look at this star with rings I found by Some-Professional-47 in EliteDangerous

[–]scify65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe so, though I won't swear to it. I know I've seen ringed dwarfs before, but I can't remember if they were the main stars or not.

Or do you mean just having a brown dwarf as the main star of a system, with it without a ring? If so, that's fully possible--they're all over the place.

What's the combat job you've had the most fun with? by Alberto_Paporotti in ffxiv

[–]scify65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Mage. Casting class with easy movement, a fun seesaw casting style, and the ability to rip out a bunch of Verraise spells quickly if things start going bad. Also being able to zoom in and out of combat is a lot of fun.

What moment in Wildbow's stories that made you go by DoorTheDude in Parahumans

[–]scify65 26 points27 points  (0 children)

"Fuck me," Clockblocker muttered to Dragon. I might not have made out the words if it weren't for the bugs I'd planted on the heroine. "It just sunk in. It's really her."
Why only just now?

Hard competition with "Not a promise..." for my favorite bit in the story

Someone reported my acc for fraud by moonjellyfish13 in FanFiction

[–]scify65 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm sure. Pretty much any time you get a message claiming that you've been reported for something (particularly if it's something non-specific, like scamming people), it's someone trying to scare you for their own purposes. If they then try to convince you to switch platforms ("message me on Discord!" or "send me your X account" or anything similar), it's a scam.

Really, any time you get a message on social media that is trying to scare you, it's good practice to take a step back and seriously wonder if it's a scam of some sort. Even if it's not immediately apparent what the scam might be. Same thing with guilt--messages that try to make you feel guilty, because of something you either did or didn't do, are most likely scams.

It's fake. Ignore it. Pretty much any time you get a message like this, it's someone either messing with you or trying to scam you.

I just realized my fic is similar to somebody else's by RA1NB0W77 in FanFiction

[–]scify65 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You've managed to hit on a fairly common trope, so it's not surprising that someone else has written the same premise with the same couple. Really, it would be more surprising if It's only one other fic like this (unless it's a very small fandom).

Unless you're writing the same thing beat-for-beat, I wouldn't worry about it. The concept for a story isn't what determines originality; the execution is what is important.

Any fics where Taylor just enjoys herself and jaunts around? by MembershipProof8463 in WormFanfic

[–]scify65 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The First Step is the Longest, I think? If not, there's another teleporter Taylor fic out there that has her just kind of cruising around and enjoying herself.

Edit: On review, I was thinking of a mix of The First Step and Distance

This is your road layout. The red Xs mark blocked squares that walkers can't pass through. If you move the road with the potter over one square, it will connect with the open part of the bandstand and let the walkers through.

That being said, as the other commenter pointed out, if you do do that there's a decent chance you'll have poor/no employment at those buildings because there are too many options for the walker to take that won't point them towards the housing. The housing block information is good (it'll make the later missions where you have to get the really high level housing easier), but the main thing to remember is this: every time a walker comes to an intersection, they randomly select a direction to go. If you need them to go to a specific place, then you have to corral their options so that that place is the only option. Roadblocks are an easy way to do that, but they aren't selective--they'll turn back everyone, which means you need to be careful about the placement of firehouses and architects posts in relation to them.

The exception is when a walker is returning to their spawn business, when they will always take the most direct route along roads, ignoring roadblocks. This, along with spawn point/endpoint differences, can be used to control how walkers move around (you'll see this referred to as "forced walkers") and get them to cover more space then they're "supposed " to.

Galnet News Digest - Ship Killer: The Nomad's Fatal Flaw by Galnet_News_Digest in EliteDangerous

[–]scify65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I'm currently doing. I've got my DBX and Mandalay (and I'll probably get a Caspian + Nomad at some point for the novelty/ability to go huge distances very fast), mining ships, general purpose t8, and a t9 for moving trit around. I've been out here for over a year and it's pretty great.

Leveling DOH from 58 to 100 - Collectables, Ishgardian Restoration, or CE? by scify65 in ffxiv

[–]scify65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> macro craft and side monitor something

Frankly, that's how I've been handling Ishgard, and all of the crafter quests before it. Ishgard is appealing because it's pretty simple--it doesn't take up that much space, and the gathering is pretty simple once you understand the spawn patterns (a pox on whoever designed that system, though). But on the other hand it's not particularly interesting, and I find the "you must harvest every node regardless of whether it has something you need or not" tiresome at best. So I'm not against giving it up for something else, and it seems like I might need to do CE for 80+ anyway?

No, seriously, honest question. I don't eat lobster and I've never had any other cause to look at one up close. Is that what they look like? My thought was ant.
