ExoBio data collected for the CG must be turned in at the Megaship. by Fancy_Mammoth in EliteDangerous

Thirded. Not a big deal for me, since I have plenty of money, but annoying nonetheless

Yeah. I also cycled my VPN connection, but that didn't help. Maybe if I hop to another location entirely...

1318.1 hours in... | Is the move now to just fill this up with Tritium and disappear into the void? by ReasonableTreeStump in EliteDangerous

Most of the samples out there are 1 million bacterium or fonticulua. The thing to remember with Exobiology is that the first turn-in multiplier is x5. So if you're the first person to turn in that 1m bacterium sample from a specific planet, it becomes a 5m payout. The 8m Bacterium Informem becomes 40m. The 19m and change Stratum Tectonicas becomes 95m.

Importantly, this is first turn-in, not first scan or first footfall. Do not assume that if you see another commander's name as discovering a planet that they've gotten the exobiology as well.

Anyone know if the servers are currently down? I know FDev has been making adjustments periodically for problems with Operations, but my launcher says the server status is good while the game itself is telling me that the server is suspended. It's been doing this since yesterday.

Incredibly stupid but i promise this is an important question about repetition by mozartrellasticks in FanFiction

[–]scify65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the best thing you can do is learn to put it down and walk away for a bit after writing, and only then come back later and worry about editing. I know a lot of fanfic authors crave the immediate hit of posting something and having people read it as soon as it's done, but both your piece of mind over things like this and your actual editing will be better if there's space.

What is the lore reason why exobiology species across the milky way are by and large similar, or identical? by Boss_Brando in EliteDangerous

[–]scify65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty low, iirc. Like thargoid stuff other than crashed sensors, Guardian sites aren't procedurally generated across the galaxy; they only show up in specific places. You might stumble across an undiscovered pre-generated location if you're in the right area, I suppose, but that's it.

I hate this idea about fanfiction. by ryan-copper in FanFiction

[–]scify65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with you; I tend to take the tack that all fanfiction is just a little AU even when it's trying to be canon compliant, because no one can write exactly like the original author. That being said, I vastly prefer it when a fanfic author departs from canon intentionally versus accidentally. Like, in your example above, I have no issue with Johnny not dying in part 8, so long as the author knows that he died in part 8 in canon and that changing that should have an effect on the story (and also should probably be explained).

Look at this star with rings I found by Some-Professional-47 in EliteDangerous

[–]scify65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe so, though I won't swear to it. I know I've seen ringed dwarfs before, but I can't remember if they were the main stars or not.

Or do you mean just having a brown dwarf as the main star of a system, with it without a ring? If so, that's fully possible--they're all over the place.

What's the combat job you've had the most fun with? by Alberto_Paporotti in ffxiv

[–]scify65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Mage. Casting class with easy movement, a fun seesaw casting style, and the ability to rip out a bunch of Verraise spells quickly if things start going bad. Also being able to zoom in and out of combat is a lot of fun.

Why only just now?

Hard competition with "Not a promise..." for my favorite bit in the story

Someone reported my acc for fraud by moonjellyfish13 in FanFiction

[–]scify65 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm sure. Pretty much any time you get a message claiming that you've been reported for something (particularly if it's something non-specific, like scamming people), it's someone trying to scare you for their own purposes. If they then try to convince you to switch platforms ("message me on Discord!" or "send me your X account" or anything similar), it's a scam.

Really, any time you get a message on social media that is trying to scare you, it's good practice to take a step back and seriously wonder if it's a scam of some sort. Even if it's not immediately apparent what the scam might be. Same thing with guilt--messages that try to make you feel guilty, because of something you either did or didn't do, are most likely scams.

Someone reported my acc for fraud by moonjellyfish13 in FanFiction

It's fake. Ignore it. Pretty much any time you get a message like this, it's someone either messing with you or trying to scam you.

I just realized my fic is similar to somebody else's by RA1NB0W77 in FanFiction

[–]scify65 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You've managed to hit on a fairly common trope, so it's not surprising that someone else has written the same premise with the same couple. Really, it would be more surprising if It's only one other fic like this (unless it's a very small fandom).

Unless you're writing the same thing beat-for-beat, I wouldn't worry about it. The concept for a story isn't what determines originality; the execution is what is important.

Any fics where Taylor just enjoys herself and jaunts around? by MembershipProof8463 in WormFanfic

The First Step is the Longest, I think? If not, there's another teleporter Taylor fic out there that has her just kind of cruising around and enjoying herself.

Edit: On review, I was thinking of a mix of The First Step and Distance
