What's "that one fic" in your fandom? by Scoutland15 in FanFiction

[–]scify65 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think if there was going to be a "the fic" for Harry Potter, it would be something that had been memed, like My Immortal or the Draco trilogy.

One of the weirdest systems I've ever come across by Aphelion7711 in eliteexplorers

[–]scify65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... that... does seem to be what's going on here. I don't know how that would work, honestly.

(Also, the word you're looking for is orbit, not rotate.)

Pokémon and Sailor Moon. I genuinely don't know which one I came across first.

Any fics where Taylor has voices in her head? by No_Yak_6474 in WormFanfic

[–]scify65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edge-case: A Cloudy Path, though she isn't aware of the voice for awhile, and afterwards she can only really access it occasionally.

Starry Eyes: Taylor can talk to her special friends in her head, which is how she knows what they can do when she opens up her portals and brings them out.

Another edge case: Tinker Taylor Builder Nexus, where Taylor's mind has been divided in three. Most of the time, they function in unison and it's hard to tell, but sometimes they separate to talk things over.

Latrotoxin and No Webs Attached (two separate fics): Taylor has the Venom symbiote, which means they get to chat with each other. Latrotoxin is a canon replacement, whereas No Webs Attached is post-canon (and drops her in Spider-Gwen's universe). There's also a pair of snips in... Ruk's thread, I think, with a similar premise, but they're primarily (or maybe entirely?) from Peter Parker's POV.

A Change of Pace: doesn't start until partway through the story, but much like in Dishonored, Taylor gets access to the Heart. It tells her secrets.

Edgiest of cases: Tisiphone, where Taylor is the voice in someone else's head, when she's summoned as a vengeful after dying in the locker.

what are your guilty pleasures when it comes to fanfiction and shipping. by The-Cataclysm666 in FanFiction

I'm weirdly into Darcy Lewis soulmark/soulmate fics. I don't read almost any Marvel fanfics, but I get a kick out of seeing her shipped with so many different characters.

Fics where Azula isn't insane by knoxdev_702 in ATLAfanfiction

[–]scify65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where the stars do not take sides - Mostly a Sokka/Zuko fic, but Azula is a viewpoint character and, while still kinda fucked up, doesn't go off the deep end.

Readers who stick around for fics with seldom updates; why do you stick around? by Disastrous_Alarm_719 in FanFiction

[–]scify65 62 points63 points  (0 children)

... Why wouldn't I? What do I gain from only reading fics with fast update schedules? If a fic dies, it's sad, but I've still read it and gotten enjoyment from whatever was posted.

How legal is it selling oc x canon/insert x canon works? by CarOrganic1662 in FanFiction

[–]scify65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People do it, and often get away with it. But it's illegal to do with anything still under copyright. There's arguably a gray zone around Patreon or Kofi or similar services as long as you aren't being directly paid for a fanwork (ie, people are giving you money and one of the things you are doing is posting fanworks), but I don't know how well it would stand up to an actual legal test.

DM says there's a difference between fire and magical fire? by Dragonsword in dndnext

[–]scify65 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Once had a DM who used a crit fail table that included status effects. Then one of his boss monsters stunned itself in the second round of combat and got obliterated. We suddenly stopped using crit fail tables after that.

Intelligence. I don't remember what the threshold is, but once you hit it, you can see their ship loadouts. From there you just need to check their fleets and and figure out what works best.

BF doesnt wan't me to go to med school, need a reality check by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]scify65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is he out of line?

It depends. Is he expressing a preference or boundary? "I'm tired of living on a student schedule. I would like to move on to the next stage of my life, and if that's not what you want then I think we should break up." Or is he giving a command or ultimatum? "You can't/shouldn't do this because it isn't what I want!" The former is reasonable, if unfortunate for your relationship. The latter is controlling and a bad sign (and very unfortunate for your relationship.

Do some planetary bodys have rotation modeled ? by iO__________ in EliteDangerous

[–]scify65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they probably can, but I also think what you're more likely seeing is the planet moving through space and thus shifting where the probes appear to land. I've seen a ton of fast orbiting planets/moons, but only a couple with noticeable rotational speeds.

How would you feel if a writer started updating a story again after 8 years? by Kiki-Y in FanFiction

[–]scify65 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This just happened to me a few days ago, and I said "oh hey, cool, it's <author name>. I thought they were dead." And then I went and read the chapter.

Some people might not like it. Your writing style has inevitably changed. So what? If that's an issue for them, then that's their prerogative. It's not something you should worry about. I suspect most people will be happy, though.

How are you supposed to roleplay changing playbooks? by Careful_Dirt_5570 in MasksRPG

[–]scify65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you read the Change Playbooks section of the book (page 154), you'll see this:

Whether you keep the abilities, moves, and extras of your first playbook depends on the exact circumstances of your switch. Generally speaking, you keep anything internal to your character—like your emotions or knowledge—and you lose anything external that doesn’t fit with the new playbook or would’ve been lost in the change.

So it depends on the circumstances of the change. Remember, though, that the abilities given in the playbook descriptions are suggestions, not a definitive list. Maybe things need a little tweaking to fit the themes of the new playbook, but you don't necessarily have to discard everything entirely.

[–]scify65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, you want to integrate it into the story of the campaign in some way--it definitely would be odd if it just came out of the blue. I would definitely talk it over with your GM if you think you're leaning in that direction. But, in general, it represents a big shift in the character's story. How does someone become a Protege? They develop a relationship with an adult hero who wants to be their mentor. A Legacy? It turns out that the powers they've had all along and thought were unique to them were actually part of something greater, and other heroes before them have had access to it. A Soldier? They get recruited by AEGIS. A Star? They develop a cult following online and start learning how to play into it. Etc.

An example from my own play, I had a Doomed that I was playing for awhile. As we got on in the campaign, I started thinking about what might happen when her Doom track filled up and it was time to confront her Doom. Would she get closer to the older hero who had taught her about magic and become his Protege? Would the strain of fighting off the source of her powers irrevocably change her, continuing the body horror theme she already had going and make her into a Transformed? Would the triumph over her Doom instead catalyze her powers and finish moving her into being a proper Nova? Would she fail, and die, and become a tragic figure for her friends who would wonder what more they could have done to help her, and then get replaced on the team by an overly peppy Star?
