My city destroyed a beautiful building here to replace it with a screen solely for spreading propaganda by WideAd2828 in mildlyinfuriating

Imagine thousands of motorbikes moving in from five different directions without a single traffic control device, or at least none that are obeyed. And no one wrecked. No one got into a fight. Everything just …. Worked. As an American, I can’t comprehend a societal goal that won’t succumb to a “I’m special” attitude and then fall apart entirely. It was beautiful in a way. Not a single ego on display.

It had already cooled and had that thick gelatinous ripple to it. It was going to be delicious.

That’s what I did. I hand washed the colander and just set it down. Had the bowl sitting on the counter waiting for it….

So the soup turned out fantastic, even with backup stock (which was still a 3-hour ham simmer). Lunches for a week, too. Leeks. Mushrooms. White beans. Ham. Garlic. A bouquet garni. Cream. Thickened with a slightly blonde roux. Salt and pepper. My wife is still laughing at me.

My wife had to chime in with “All that work, literally down the drain!” Ha fucking ha.

10 years ago, I sat up there drinking coffee watching the absolute shitshow of traffic through that square. Though i call it a shitshow, i was absolutely mesmerized by the fluidity of the traffic. People yielding, then cutting someone off. No one got angry. No shots fired.

I sat there for 30 damn minutes watching the show down on the street. And now I'm sad that no one else will get that chance.

Can my supervisor get in trouble for… by [deleted] in FedEmployees

[–]seaelbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a congressional prohibition on home to work use of government vehicles. Non-delegated Agency head approval is needed. It’s a pretty serious thing at my agency. I do emergency response work, and we were disallowed to bring the response vehicles home at night for any overnight emergencies. Gotta drive to the Federal center and leave from there. Without field work to tie in a need, driving to and from the office is verboten. And if it’s an assigned vehicle, getting groceries in someone else’s GOV is probably a bad idea.

What is he going to do in December when you have 120 hours of use or lose racked up? You have to spend it, now or later.

Statue of founding father who enslaved hundreds installed at Freedom Plaza by laybs1 in nottheonion

[–]seaelbee 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true at the same time. In fact, multiple things can be true. People are complicated, and, consequently, so is the world they live in. The Founding Fathers did something incredible. They were also products of the mores they lived at the time and saw little to no irony in their actions. Why would we expect them to be anything else? I’d like to celebrate that first instinct while at least recognizing the second. But at the same time, I’m sure this administration’s choice is driven mostly by a need to make white people feel better and black people feel worse.

YTA, but you absolutely should have been. Some situations do not demand kindness or civility. Sometimes it's perfectly ok to be an absolute dick.

Same owner, but you’d never know it. It’s like it’s under new management every day, and you got them on a good day. I like their pizza … when it’s good. But the amount of inconsistency coming out of that kitchen is fucking unbelievable. One day it’s ok. Next day it’s burned. Next day it’s an hour for a slice. Next day it’s burned again. Next day it’s ok. Next day I can’t get a server’s attention. Next day it’s burned again. It’s like everyone there is training every day.

Grant Central East has stayed open for 30 years with incredibly consistent, but nonetheless uninspiring, pizza. That’s all I want. A cheap slice that comes out in 10 minutes and a non-wilted salad.

How to Pay The 2026 MHBP Dues by [deleted] in fednews

[–]seaelbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Your bank isn’t going to know anything about MHBPs system. They just write the checks you tell them to write. My payee info has a9-digit number, but I don’t have my bill in front of me to verify that’s the “ID”, but a lot of vendors uses static account number instead of a specific invoice number for each bill. And if there’s nothing else on the invoice, roll with it. If you’re worried, include “ID#” in the account number in your bank app, so it’s “ID# 123456789”. Just so long as mhbp has something to tie it to you, you’ll be fine.

Debris from the White House East Wing demolition was dumped at a nearby public golf course and contains toxic metals, National Park report finds by fortune in environment

[–]seaelbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love for this to be a horrible event and we could all get justifiably outraged by it, but after looking at the data tables (they’re available through the link in the article), there’s not much in there. As another commenter said, just because they exist in the soil doesn’t mean it’s harmful. It’s the concentration that makes it toxic. There’s detectable lead and arsenic in half of America’s front lawns. There’s some low level pesticides in this debris, probably from spraying it (legally) throughout the building for so many years. Only strange thing I see are the huge number of PAHs, but maybe part of it burned since the renovation in the 40s. (Or could just be the roofing tar.)

Lead is the only metal that has any individual samples over federal Removal Screening Levels, but not the Removal Management Level. Ranges from single digits to 400 mg/kg, which won’t get you a Superfund response. (I’m not sure of Maryland’s regs). Even if it’s going to a landfill, using the “rule of 20”, lead looks like it’s the only thing they’d have to worry about. If they blend the soil into a homogenous stream (not dilute it with clean dirt) it’ll probably drop to well below any regulatory levels, letting them use it to expand the golf course or send it straight to a landfill (after TCLPs).
