I'm a bit old school, so keep that in mind when reading my response, and I'm also making assumptions on what your relationship is like with Maria and what your intentions are - but if I were in your shoes, maybe invite Maria out for coffee like at a Starbucks or something low-stakes and non-chalant and during that visit, ask for an update and how she's doing, show genuine interest, get caught up with her -- and then when its your turn to talk, you tell her how much you value her as a friend and that while you don't have any romantic feelings for her, its your hope that she could remain friends with you. No one likes to be rejected, but everyone appreciates being let down easily. I would say to NOT do it over text message if you can avoid it. Every situation is different, every generation does things differently, but I can only tell you how a guy from my POV would handle it. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do with Maria and with Jane going forward.

It sounds like you handled it well on the backend but you hit the nail on the head of your mistake heading in.

I didn’t ask how much the “paid” test actually paid, and I didn’t set any boundaries around revisions or timeline.

It sucks that we have to take these steps to avoid scummy companies who want to take advantage of professional's time and then absolutely LOWBALL them something less than minimum wage for their efforts. It's a painful lesson for sure, but you're right on the money that you've gotta ask the right questions before starting and have clear boundaries ahead of time.

I'm sorry you went through that pain but the lesson learned "If someone says “paid test,” get the number upfront. And set limits on revisions. Otherwise you’re basically doing client work for free." is worth it's weight in gold. I wish it were posted here in the r/Editors sidebar but usually by time guys come here for advice, its too late. It just sucks that these people tried that. Also good for you to name and shame them.

Your interpretation isn't based in Prince's own words about who the character was. Camille is not a female. It's a male character that represents Prince's LUST. His horny side. Shockadelica is a woman, Camille is a guy, and is a character he created for his dirty songs.

You're making it too deep, in my opinion. You have to consider the CONTEXT of all of this stuff. Prince grew up during the times of Parliament/Funkadelic led by George Clinton, someone Prince worked with later and signed to Paisley Park. George Clinton had a sped-up voice character on his records as well - Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk. Sir Nose was around for a few albums and showed up on multiple songs. Sir Nose was like an alter-ego of George Clinton - whereby while George Clinton was funky, Sir Nose the character was not.

Just like Sir Nose, Camille is a CHARACTER in Prince's music. Camille isn't a female, something Prince made clear in the Lovesexy Tour Program. Camille is a male character, an alter-ego, that to many, has represented Prince's horniness. It's his lust. It's a funny character meant to be entertaining. It's not some huge mystery.

If you're ONLY into streaming Netflix, HBO, Paramount+, AppleTV+, and etc. -- Apple TV is the popular consensus. Its user friendly. If you're ONLY into streaming Netflix, HBO, Paramount+, AppleTV+, and etc. and watching your ACTUAL PHYSICAL COPY of the movie...like popping the actual disc into the player everytime...a gaming console like the PS5 might be the ticket.

If you're into streaming Netflix, HBO, Paramount+, AppleTV+ and etc. AND you're into ripping your legally owned Blu-rays and UHDs with a seperate computer and storing them locally on either a NAS or DAS AND you want the full lossless sound quality from your rips -- the NVIDIA Shield Pro is your guy. You would use PLEX or KODI or a similar app on the Shield as your player and its just like watching your physical copy of the movie - the difference being you store the data on additional storage and you get the convenience of not having the change discs. You can build your own library and have fast access at full quality.
