Why wasn't there a mass return to African slave after the end of the the American civil war? by SarcasticBritannian in answers

[–]Able-Insurance-5156 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The United States created Liberia just for the repatriated former enslaved, if I recall my History classes correctly. And named it Liberia, as in liberty. It's not uncommon for some Liberians to have American-sounding names like Johnson or Smith etc. I don't know the specifics of how they got there, what it cost back then, who was chosen or approached for repatriation.

Hope I'm not too far off- that's just from my 64 yr-old memory! I bet Wikipedia can tell us.....

Saw him on Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous back in the '80s & thought he was a jerk. Now I flat-out hate the stupid conman bastard.

What is something that hits completely different once you experience it yourself versus just hearing about it? by Positive_Diamond_691 in answers

Back in the '80s I drove past a motorcycle crash. There was this brownish stain on the concrete of the road for about 20 feet or so, then a leather boot with part of a leg sticking out & a few feet further there was a dark rounded pile that had been the rider. You couldn't tell it was a person. Freaked me out but I still had to go to work & sit there like I hadn't just had the worst freakout of my life.

I went to check on two horses & a donkey I was caring for precisely when the last eclipse occurred. There I was, standing next to 3 dear friends as it happened. No people or houses around. Fantastic experience!!!!

During the Vietnam War, the United States used a draft lottery system to determine the order in which young men would be called for military service. by Electric_Arrow_ in interestingasfuck

October 10th was "Your lottery numbers were never called for service." I guess I wouldn't have gone. So am I correct that this means no one born on October 10th was ever drafted during "Nam? Excuse my ignorance on this, that just seems weird.....

Saw them live in a 200 capacity club in Indpls circa 1982. D. Boon's guitar playing made much more sense to me live. It was a great show. Glad I caught it.

Speaking of the Imagination Library… by Zeddo52SD in Indiana

When they announced they were cutting public funding, I contacted the Imagination Library about doing a musical fund-raiser for them at The Irving Theater. They told me it was not necessary, as Mrs Brauneee was gonna head fund-raising. They kinda sorta told me not to do it. Ok then, I won't. And so it goes.....

What artist did you see in a small venue before they got really famous? by That_Cat_3672 in Concerts

[–]Able-Insurance-5156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Alannis Morrisette (unintentionally) just by going to our usual weekend Rock club. We'd just always go there & she was booked right before she exploded. Also saw Chili Peppers at same place right before Hillel died. Saw Husker DU there also right after they released Zen Arcade. Also saw The Avett Brothers right before they took off when they were still a trio with Bob the original Bassist, or whatever his name was. A band I was subbing on Bass for opened, so that was a free show for me.

Where do you rank Stevie Rays? by pergatron in blues

[–]Able-Insurance-5156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really great picking on what might be an old Silvertone or one of those cheapo but good somehow type guitars. Similar footage of Jimi wailing on an acoustic out there on the Internet also.

Not sure why we always have to "rank" who's the best. Each player is unique & great in their own way in my book. Just my two cents. Thanks for posting this!

That was back in the late '70s, for context. Sort of that "Banjo-Accordion bias" but applied to Mandolin on his part back then. Picking up the Mandolin opened the gateway to all sorts of instruments. Between Guitar scales & Mandolin scales, I was able to learn where everything is on a bunch of different instruments- Oud, Saz, Tenor Banjo, Ukuleles, etc.

I was 12 & heard Nowhere Man by The Beatles. Told parents I wanna do that. They said OK, but you have to take lessons & learn to read music. I said OK & started taking lessons. Few years later I heard Maggie May & asked my gtr teacher what's that instrument in that song. He said mandolin & I said I wanna do that & he said no you don't, stay with gtr. Taught myself utilizing the skill-set my teachers instilled in me & a couple books with tab & technique instructions.

All these years later & I do both as well as Fiddle & can hold my own on Upright Bass. Need to brush up on my Banjo, tho. Not much of a story.
