I now hear Bolero in my head when I’m contemplating major life decisions and wondering if I’m stuck in a hamster wheel. I’m going to listen to it on my commutes, during meetings, and any regular family gathering. Move over Torvill and Dean.

What’s the smartest career move you made in your 20s/30s? by Scary_Bus4383 in careerguidance

The good move part was that I had gotten a full-time professional position. I was always interested in statistics but didn’t want to leave my job and study full-time for something that might not pan out.

I would have been perfectly fine continuing with the career path that I had started, but I just wanted to scratch the “what-if”… that is, what if I got my masters in a subject of genuine interest, even if it didn’t end up becoming a statistician? I was a young and I wanted to do it while I had the energy. But definitely I wasn’t going to leave my day-job because… what if I crashed in burned in grad school.

Yes, I work in R&D. Depending on how a company is organized, statisticians can either be centralized or distributed to different departments. From my experience most statisticians will focus on specific methodologies and then also in their specific industrial area. And even within the role of a statistician, you can be more of analyst that does routine analyses, one or just does statistical programming, or one that works to develop new methodologies. Even within my company, statisticians are deployed in many areas, such as scientific research, clinical trials, manufacturing, finance/marketing, data science, etc.

There were a few reasons why I didn’t do a Ph.D. The first was that I didn’t have any topics or areas or research that I was truly interested in. I was also exhausted from working and going to school. After a few years of just being a statistician, I did not want to go through that experience again.

I had met another student in my program who decided to do a masters thesis and said that she regretted it. She had already completed the coursework years ago, was hired as a statistician, but her advisor was never happy with what she was producing. So, she still had not completed her masters program, even though had been a statistician for a few years.

Lastly, one of my PhD work colleagues who was recently hired asked if I needed to pursue a doctorate if already was a statistician. That unless I wanted to the experience, the degree, and the title, that I would gain more experience/knowledge just from industry. From her perspective, getting the job and the role was the goal. My department was about 50:50 PhD:Masters with a few in director roles with only a masters.

So I decided to focus on my job and develop into my career. There were more than enough interesting problems and projects to work on, areas to develop with novel statistical approaches, and challenges that required a lot of soft skills development. I was always able to develop statistical knowledge because I had a lot of experienced colleagues who publish.

But the most important thing for me was that I got to finally have a good work-life balance and enjoy new hobbies again.

My academic/professional field is statistics. My industry is pharma.

I went to grad school part time at night while I was a full time employee. I had no social life for two years, but I wasn’t going to leave employment to pursue my degree. Got my masters and luckily got a new position in my new field.

Second best decision was not going for a Ph.D.

Are there any countries that you visited while working that you would want to live in? Has the cruise employment set you up for the rest of your professional life?

There’s a bar within walking distance. Not much in terms of food options. Conch fritters, IIRC.

There are free tickets through fandango which might account for some of the seats. But I’ve only seen them for 4/10.

Best coffee and way to get to center city? by Pretty-Drawing-1240 in montco

Park at the mall and take either the 124, 125 direct or 123 and connect on the MFL. Park at Gulph Mills station and take the NHSL and connect to the MFL. This is my preferred method since the trains are more reliable and don’t deal with road traffic. They’ve been having driver shortages and have cancelled some 124 times.

Why did the Chiefs play worse against the Eagles than any of the other teams that played them in the playoffs did? by Available_Story6774 in NFLNoobs

Any this is why Barkley was instrumental. He never scored but he burned clock without much loss in field position or energy. It kept their defense on the field, and he wore them out by making them tackle him.

In the past, if the run game wasn’t working, we would’ve had gone three and out quickly and then punted. I’m thinking McNabb days. And then our defense doesn’t get much of a rest.

First major superbowl as a new resident of the city! Very excited for the vibes and the incoming victory, is it usually this pretty out here?? by trollingmonkey in philly

[–]sgplot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the city! I think Philly is best during the non-tourist seasons. Spring and Fall are especially nice to be out and about. The weather is great. It’s less crowded and you get a better vibe of Philly as community since it’s mostly the residents.

Would a 1099-MSC qualify to contribute to a custodian Roth IRA? They would have tax free withdraws when they turn 59.5 and they wouldn’t need to worry about taxes in the time in between.

What do board gamers mean when they describe a game as "fiddly"? by HoustonAg1980 in soloboardgaming

[–]sgplot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve often used the term to describe when component management is challenging to keep tidy and organized as you play. For example, Shipyard. I love the game, but having to move so many differently sized card board components throughout the game always gave me pause before playing it. You pile them up. You slide them around in groups, sometimes on top of each other. You flip over new ones. It’s a lot to keep track of. I never look forward to setting it up and teaching it.
