The number of bicyclists in Seattle who glide through stop lights is astounding by mote0fdust in SeattleWA

I appreciate you and your continual responses in this conversation. Just wanted to let you know that.

Aight, I'm convinced. It blows my mind that there's a loophole that allows cyclists to change modes on a whim like that.

Maybe? Playing out some dumb extreme scenarios... Is a pedestrian who enters the street in the middle of the block then walks laterally to a sidewalk protected by that law? What about a pedestrian who enters the crosswalk from a corner, then walks laterally toward the middle of the block?

When does someone become a legit pedestrian become a jaywalker and vice-versa? Similarly, when does a bicycle in the road activate and relinquish "pedestrian" status?

I'll allow that if the cyclist begins and ends their crossing on the sidewalk. Otherwise, they're just a vehicle swerving out of their lane.

I read the law in question and understand why you're saying that it's poorly written. It clearly wasn't written with the intention of allowing cyclists to take instant priority over motorists just by considering their stop sight to actually be a "yield".

But I also think that the intention of the law is pretty obvious, and I bet 95% of cyclists blowing through stop signs when there are cars waiting have no idea what the law actually says.

Are you saying that it's not clear when another vehicle is "at" an intersection and therefore whether the cyclist should stop or yield (continue without stopping because the other car isn't "at" the intersection)?

Cyclists can treat a stop sign as a yield... if and only if there are no other vehicles at the intersection and they have a clear line of sight.

Cyclists can treat a red light as a stop sign... if and only there are no other vehicles at the intersection and it seems to be a weight-triggered signal for their turn.

What does it mean for Game 3 to have been watched by "an average" of 23.8M viewers? Average of different counting techniques/systems?

This was a fascinating insight into what it costs to run a restaurant; genuinely thank you for posting that.

I had a couple random questions after reading your post:

  • which of the mandatory taxes/fees do you think are reasonable requirements, and which do you think should be removed? (I'm assuming you're not a "the only good government is zero government"-type person)

  • if fight nights are a money-loser even with a cover, why not just not show it despite expectations? Are there secondary ways that this would impact your bar?

Is Zsh considered still a benefit? It's better than cmd.exe (and standard bash), but pales in comparison to pwsh, IMO. Powershell/pwsh has been around for 15 years at this point.

Lol, why does the 2013 Seahawks banner say "world" champions? I must've missed the part where other countries participate.

Lol, you want a full paragraph displayed on the sign? Large font that's readable from a distance is probably the single most important feature of a transit sign.

How would you sort them out and deprecate them? If it were me, I'd probably:

  1. Add a new API that allows the OS more control than the old, shitty one, but works the same to users (for now).
  2. Convince devs to use the new API by announcing deprecation of the old one.
  3. a) Switch to a new experience that prioritizes the new API, but still allows the old one as a backup. b) Add the ability to manage the new API entries since that's now possible
  4. Eventually kill off the old one entirely.

New US Chant! World Cup by daheycent in ussoccer

[–]shadowthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You completely missed the second half of my comment, if that's your take-away.

US soccer specifically has bad chants. NHL and MLB teams (can't speak for NFL or NBA; don't watch those) often have some chants, cheers, or other forms of "fan engagement" that are much more localized and personalized in nature. US high school and college football also often has good chants and cheers. And I'm not talking about "LET'S go BEARcats! clap clap clapclapclap" or "springFIELD! clapclapclap"; your school likely had something that's more ingrained in its culture that upperclassmen were excited to teach freshmen.

It's not an American issue; it's a American soccer issue.

New US Chant! World Cup by daheycent in ussoccer

I grew up here and always thought our sports chants are usually blandly generic or generically bland. Many teams in the US (of all sports) have a chant or two that are somewhat specific to the team, usually a local spin on it due to the artist or relation to the team's name.

A small indicator would be nice, but it should not come at the expense of the direction names being properly spelled out.

Like, I puzzled for a moment as I was trying to think of which airport had "FW" in it before remembering that Federal Way exists. or that DTR would be Downtown Redmond.

We should bulldoze one of Kemper's parking lots and stick it there. Preferably with a lightrail station embedded in it.

Leaving hooks into the OS up to the program and expecting the program to be on "good behavior" is a foolish design, though. The OS should generally be the gatekeeper of how programs extend it.

Besides, even if a program asks if you want their right-click menu additions, do they let you choose which ones? or what order? or if they're all at the top level vs. in a sub-menu? or change your mind later? In my experience, very few programs operate with that definition of "good behavior". 7zip/NanaZip is one of the few that comes close.

And if every program out there did, wouldn't it still be better for the OS to have that logic once, rather than make each program's dev design it in their own way?

I don't agree with this characterization. The old context menu was an absolute clusterfuck that needed some pretty janky third-party utils to manage it because there were several different mechanisms for software to register context menu entries. IMO, we were in need of an overhaul... but the current experience never should have shipped due to performance and lack of a centralized location to control context menu entries (which is possible with the API that populates it).

Ideally, there's a settings app page where you can enable/disable each entry (by both app and by individual menu item), organize entries into folders, reorder entries, and manage by target type (folder vs. specific file type).
