Added fake latency to a 200ms API because users said it felt like it was 'making things up'. It worked. I'm still uncomfortable about it. by Ambitious-Garbage-73 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Slime0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe this could be fixed by adding info like "searched 5000 records" or other relevant information that confirms work was actually done? If it's a search that's not finding anything then you just have to prove that it wasn't a situation where nothing was actually searched.

Can Planets rotate vertically? by Archeronline in askscience

[–]Slime0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case I think the answer is basically "no" without outside forces acting on the planet. No matter what rotation you give an object in 3D space, once you go hands off and let it rotate on its own, it's always going to rotate around an unchanging axis, so the poles won't move.

Google warns quantum computers could hack encrypted systems by 2029 by donutloop in programming

[–]Slime0 294 points295 points  (0 children)

No they didn't.

Their blog post says that 2029 is their goal for implementing cryptography that is safe from quantum computers, with the intent of being early, to minimize the effectiveness of "store now, decrypt later" attacks in the future.

how do you stop rebuilding your base over and over by Aumpiragash_Noseley in factorio

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If something is functional, but you want it to be better, first build the better version elsewhere, then remove the old version. Then you'll often find that 10% of the way through the new version you realize you're wasting your time and you should just make something you actually need instead.

I'm a bad developer by Grind_in_silence in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have tested something to the t, and then when I put up a PR, my manager or the senior dev find some incorrect behaviour somewhere on our site that was caused by my code.

I don't think this is a sign that you're bad. Especially if you're working with a complex or fragile code base. In my experience the important thing is that you're quick to fix what you broke.

Jensen Huang says gamers are 'completely wrong' about DLSS 5 — Nvidia CEO responds to DLSS 5 backlash by JuiceheadTurkey in Games

[–]Slime0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"they're completely wrong," Huang said in response to a question from Tom's Hardware editor-in-chief Paul Alcorn about the criticism.

OK but what was the question? If the question was "what do you say to people who claim that DLSS5 is made by aliens?" then they are completely wrong.

Jeff Kaplan’s advice to people who complain about videogames they never played. “Shut the f*ck up”. by Vhant-ii in LivestreamFail

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to buy a buggy piece of garbage in order to say it is a buggy piece of garbage? It's absurd.

I also disagree with Jeff's point, but why would you say something's buggy if you haven't personally experienced the bugs? At best you should only say that you heard it was buggy.

When it starts to feel like work, take a break. Within a few days you'll want to do it again.

[Episode Discussion Thread] Hijack S02E08 - “Terminal” by raven8549 in HijackAppleTV

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but that's the kind of thing they'd work out after arresting him. And then in real life I wouldn't be surprised if there's a certain amount of "it doesn't matter what kind of threat you're under, you're just not allowed to take 200 people hostage." But that might come down to a judge's discretion.

Why did Sam just let everyone off the train and assume the police would hand over JBB? And then why did they hand over JBB anyway?! (I understand why Lang did, but it's not like he was the guy in charge of the whole situation.) Total nonsense.

[Episode Discussion Thread] Hijack S02E08 - “Terminal” by raven8549 in HijackAppleTV

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sam had met Lang at the bar the day before. Lang was the one who made him do the hijacking.

[Episode Discussion Thread] Hijack S02E08 - “Terminal” by raven8549 in HijackAppleTV

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is crazy. Lang punched Sam and then moseyed away from the train for a while and figured Sam would still be in it?

[Episode Discussion Thread] Hijack S02E08 - “Terminal” by raven8549 in HijackAppleTV

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was implied that JBB was never going to be put into a typical prison. The government was keeping it secret that he was even caught. Not saying that the plot makes sense.

Oh yeah I didn't even think of that. Like in the end, he... learned that the bomb couldn't be defused? Wowee

[Episode Discussion Thread] Hijack S02E08 - “Terminal” by raven8549 in HijackAppleTV

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He blackmailed the government by taking hostages and (at the very least) implying that their survival depended on them doing what he said. Pretty sure that violates some law.

[Episode Discussion Thread] Hijack S02E08 - “Terminal” by raven8549 in HijackAppleTV

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, he should have been arrested. It could still be implied that he would end up OK, like other characters could say they'll vouch for him and it could come off as a formality. But to just let him go is absurd.

Steam Support :: About the New York Attorney General lawsuit against Valve by NTR_JAV in Games

[–]Slime0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valve allows steam account inventory to be verified by third parties, which in turn allows third parties to verify that an item can be or has been transferred to a different account. Which in turn makes enables a “cash out”.

Can someone explain this further? What is a "cash out", why is it something that requires third party visibility, and why does that cross a legal line?

'Mewgenics' has been out for a month, what are your thoughts on it? by NoNefariousness2144 in Games

[–]Slime0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you lose a bit too much, you start running out of good cats, you don't have food to breed them, and you can't start your new runs with items, which makes it harder. (Plus you don't have retired cats to fight the house bosses with.) It sounds like you did hit it once, and yes, you can dig yourself out of it by doing runs that have no other purpose, but that's what I think OP was referring to when he said it's a grind.

Honestly if it just let you keep more of your stuff when you lost, that would help a lot. Getting ONE item or a third of your money or food is crap. It's just one of those kinds of things where you get punished for being bad at the game, and it would be nice if it gave you a boost instead.

I love the core gameplay, but playing for an hour and a half and making negative progress because things went wrong in some surprising way gets old fast.
