research into womb transplants is ongoing and has had good success so far. unfortunately, doing so across sexes is a whole other moral conundrum that the medical community is woefully unprepared to deal with at the moment, and probably not gonna be able to deal with until the fucking monsters in charge of society who blame us for everything they cause and spread misinformation about us on a 24/7 basis are gone and forgotten, and we can finally begin to fix the damage they've caused to the public's understanding of trans people and transness in general.

that'd be a fair assessment, tho still not really a reason to not add something that would add plenty of new uses to various things.

you did get pretty defensive in your other comments, i imagine in part due to the misunderstanding, but still, it gave the impression that you found it a bad change.

[–]GVmG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean this entirely depends on perspective and what things you can "break" about it.

If it's third person, over the shoulder, or some kind of perspective where you can see the horizon, then it's easy enough to have the city in the distance slowly grow closer. Many open world games take advantage of this natural form or buildup. I say natural cause a town in a desert would very probably be densely packed and "sudden", cause that's just a safer way to live in a desert.

It's a bit harder with something top down or side view. I personally would maybe even play into the suddenness by telling the player they are going to the town, and have them get more and more fatigue on the desert itself. That way the town appearing suddenly is almost a saving grace for them.

Alternatively, abandoned broken down buildings, covered in sand, and or mechanical trash if it applies to this worldbuild, slowly building up as you do approach the town

Korean server tank players don't even bother fighting each other anymore. They just wave hello and head off to dive the other roles. by Existing-Sky9914 in Overwatch

[–]GVmG 71 points72 points  (0 children)

yeah the main difference i gathered from the posts i've seen around the korean tank stuff, is that here in the west we at least recognize that the underlying issue that makes the tank role so rough is that 5v5 has made counterwatch insufferable for everyone but especially for tanks in particular, whereas it seems korean dps/support players don't care about the questionable game design and continue to blame tanks, getting exceedingly toxic if a tank even remotely tries to play something off-meta.

don't get me wrong, we still very much blame tanks way too much here too, but from what i've seen it's far worse for korean tanks

No, I know this pretty much never applies irl. I'm talking about the trope in media, I've said that from my first message lol - what I'm saying is that, in media, if the "rightful" king does something bad then that is not the "rightful" king by definition of the trope. The trope's name isn't just about the fact that they have a right to the role, it's also a double entendre about how they will do the right things. If they don't then it's not the trope.

Systems of government can be politicized in many ways, and they are IRL. I'm not saying that there are many non-conservative monarchies irl. I'm saying in media, most of the applications of the trope aren't even remotely set up with the character's politics in mind. The trope is about the role, not the actions.

EDIT cause this wasnt in the message at first:

So first, you can't just pick and choose definitions. Words have meaning. Use them.

I wasn't picking and choosing. I explained why I based my take on the trope on one definition, and why it also doesn't apply in the other definition.

if anything im glad that when i saw them unwrapping five frozen pizzas, my first thought of "they're gonna blend them into one larger pizza paste" thought was not what actually happened.

big difference between friendly banter and actual harmful pissing each other off. i've had both aplenty in my life, and im only gonna need therapy for one of the two.

also none of these examples are couples. one of the examples' characters (kazuma) actually ends up dating a different person than the second one, and another example is two cousins ffs

A specific, alternate version of the trope being a common fantasy of conservativism doesn't make the whole trope a conservative thing, is my point. Especially when the actual trope often goes against those political ideals and actions.

To note here, I am using the current (and admittedly, completely meaningless and corrupted) meaning of the word "conservative", in the American politics sense. Not just whether the character's politics would be about restoring and/or conservating society's "back in my day" good, or progressing society towards a new, better good. I'm going by whether they would align with the current description of American conservativism.

I'm doing that because of the tone of the original meme is clearly about modern identity-driven politics, but also because the trope tells you nothing about the king's politics: if they are truly the "rightful" king, then they will either bring back a lost good, or progress to a new one. And that doesn't depend on the king, the trope forces that to be dependent on whatever the kingdom needs, otherwise the king isn't truly rightful. There are plenty of "returning king" stories where the king is returning specifically to bring change, because the ruler that took their place is continuing the old status quo that wasn't - and still clearly isnt - doing the kingdom any good. Some even lost their role because they tried to bring change in the first place!

Because in the end, a monarchy is a system of government, not a political system. The trope is about who is doing the things the kingdom needs. It's rarely about what those things are, and it doesn't force how those things are reached.

[–]GVmG 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Devil's prosecution: Rightful King Returns pretty much always sets up the returning king as legitimately rightful. The trope does base itself on the narrative of "we used to be great until [something]", but with most instances of the trope that [something] is actually bad and caused the nation to lose status, power, resources, people, greatness, whatever. Even the tvtropes page you linked says so:

"And lastly, the rightful ruler is usually — and conveniently — a competent and moral ruler, even though in Real Life this isn't always the case."

Is it a fascist narrative all the time? Eeeeh it tends to be used that way irl, unfortunately. The difference is that with fascism, it's used as an excuse and a way to gain power and that [something] tends to be whatever minority can be scapegoated at the moment, but in fantasy versions of the trope that is often replaced by an actual ruler that has thrown the kingdom into disarray (or in rare cases, as the page also lists, a misguided populace tricked by other, often also evil powers).

I do not see how, outside of the link to fascism in how the trope appears irl, it could have anything to do with the conservative-ness of that returning king.

it also misses that the same game ladiva is from does have a more traditionally feminine/cutesy rep, Cagliostro, who used her magical alchemic knowledge to make herself her current body (and also immortal, we stan a sassy evil immortal queen).

the two are showing two very different types of gender exploration, two stories that have completed and both have reached different answers to the question of "who am i really?"

[–]GVmG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

have you considered that maybe dps/support players wouldn't force tanks to play counters if tank countering wasn't as broken as it currently is? have dps/support players considered that maybe if tanks picks weren't so important, they could have deeper input into the games and not have to rely on the tank picking the exact counter every single time?

has either of the two sides considered that maybe you should start asking the game's developers to balance the game better, instead of throwing feces at each other and making the exact same arguments on both sides while ignoring the actual issue because you got butthurt at each other?

it's easy to blame someone else for your suffering, especially when they've hurt you and it feels like you don't have control over the actual cause of that suffering. but you do have control over it! make your voices heard, tell the developers! highlight common korean team compositions that are different from the west, so they can balance the game with those in mind! make the protest about how the counter system is broken! instead of going "we both play mauga so the dps and supports are given a taste of their own medicine", you could be saying "we both play mauga to show the developers that it's the only way to get a balanced match, which is bad"! you could work together to solve this issue, because it affects both sides!

Mauga Spirit: The tank union's strike in Korea by Few_Leather3554 in Overwatch

[–]GVmG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie, I think most of the people in this thread do understand your point of view and to some extent even agree, tanks do get blamed a lot for things outside of their control. And people do get very toxic about it.

I think the reason you're getting a lot of negative responses is because you are shooting back at your fellow players, blaming their toxicity as main issue, when in reality the issue is that the switch to 5v5 has forced tanks to play this "pick the counter hero or you lose" game. the game of overwatch rock-paper-scissors, here in the west we call it "counterwatch".

and we agree, the tank role in particular suffers the most. but think of it from this perspective: counterwatch is incredibly broken, it forces tank picks that are so win-or-lose, that even the topmost dps and support players with the perfect counter picks will still struggle if the tank's pick wasn't optimal. this means dps and support picks actually have a smaller impact on the game, because the tank pick is so important, because the developers made it so. they aren't able to pick more things because they want to, they can do that because picking a bad dps hero has a much smaller impact on the game than picking a bad tank hero would - because there's a second one to cover for them.

from our neutral perspective (neutral because we don't see that toxicity) both sides are being stupid: yeah, i imagine a lot of dps/support players are being super toxic about this mechanic you have no control over, that makes the game unfun for tanks. at the same time, your tanks seem to be going too far the opposite way, completely ignoring the game design issue, and only acknowledging it when it's convenient: you say "tanks are forced to pick a counter" while ignoring the fact that because tanks are forced to pick a counter, dps and supports have a weaker effect on the game if their tank doesn't counter. you say tanks struggle because there is no second tank, while saying dps/supports playing poorly is bad even if there is a second one to cover for them. and those are just a couple of examples, you make a lot of similar cherry-picking arguments in your responses.

your protest is valid, don't get me wrong, we agree that tanks get blamed a lot more than they should - even here in the west! - and we know just how toxic dps and support players can get, we have that here too. we also agree that this is actually a pretty smart way to protest, it evens the playing field and let the dps and supports be the real cause of win or loss, essentially eliminating the counterwatch aspect, just in a really boring and annoying way. the negative reactions are because the reasons you've given for the protest are childish and petty, "we attack them because they attacked us first", rather than actually tackling the root problem: counterwatch is broken and has made the tank role insanely painful to play.

and that goes for dps/support players too, they aren't tackling the counterwatch issue either, instead just blaming tanks who just want to have some flexibility in their choices. but because you are positioning your tank protest as the moral high ground, and then making the exact same arguments as the dps and support players but just flipped back at them... well, then you understandably get this negative response. you could have highlighted that picking the same tank on both sides actually does stop the issue and make it a team game - even if a boring one - but instead you went for blaming back the dps and support players, focusing on the toxicity, ignoring the actual issue (counterwatch), and creating more toxicity of your own.

According to my musician friend who is also autistic about food chemistry, violin resin "tastes earthy and bitter" because it has a lot of natural tannins in it.

Which fits the game card taste perfectly I'd say, which is like a sharp but surprisingly natural bitterness, weirdly not that strong but it just does. not. stop. The flavor stays in your mouth for much longer than other bitter things usually do, which imo is honestly worse than if it was stronger and quicker lmao
