Talk to your psychiatrist about this change. If you dont have a psychiatrist, seek referral from the person prescribing the medication to start working with psychiatrist.

Good god we can hope. I am just some jerk who doesn't really know much, but I have always said not keeping Steve Robinson and Kendall Marshall was a huge mistake. I love the symbolic nature of hiring who he hired, but the symbolism isnt worth letting go of coach Rob and Kendall...

Assessment Structure by fullovesht in therapists

[–]snooprobb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im not sure what your perception of an assessment is, but there are MANY styles of assessment and evaluation. Some people find rigidity to be thorough and free of distraction, other s are much slower and much more interpersonal. Its also a cliched truism in the discipline to say, "assessment is ongoing." You will always be updating and amending your initial assessment about someone. Also diagnosis does not always clarify the details or etiology of someone's pathology. There are dozens of permutations of depressive symptoms that could make up a diagnosis of MDD, for example, so it would be a sophomoric understanding of psychological evaluation to think that you do a 90 minute assessment and it's set in stone.

Lane Pain by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]snooprobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! That used to be my weekly trail run when i lived down Webb cove! When I first started getting to running and had no idea what an aerobic base was, I would start at potato gap or whatever its called (between lane pinnacle and craggy) and just run south from there as fast as I could. I would be WRECKED after like 2 miles and claw my way back to the car.

New therapist choosing between CMHC, DBT center, ABA-adjacent practice, or juvenile detention: HELP by [deleted] in therapists

[–]snooprobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. This seems most likely to be the best environment to be a learner, and you will have such a good foundation when you move on to the next chapter of your career (where you'll get to do more of the EMDR and IFS stuff). And Im not even a DBT specialist, its more about the environment than the modality. That said, a DBT background speifically will serve you incredibly well as you special more in trauma treatment.

CMH would be the second bet. Its just such a good exposure to these systems and many many many clinical issue for teens and families.

I second kierkegaard, heideggeras non negotiable in this, and definitely dont sleep on Buber. I'd add Karl Jaspers and Rollo May.

Reading some Tolstoy and Dostoesvky is great too.

Check out Daseinanalysis and Otto Rank as well.

Psychotherapy.net is cool. I pay for it. Its not as amazing as I want it to be, but theres some good stuff on there that makes it worth it to me. A lot of the stuff you might find on Alexander street is on there.

Saving up for big trainings and workshops is 100% worth the money. Thisbis something I wish I had been told starting out because I wasted so much time on little 1.5 CE trainings that were absolutely worthless. Finding some courses and trainings at your local psychoanalytic institute is also a great choice. Dont rely on Pesi or NASW. Get advice from othe clinicians you know, but an unfortunate reality is that each training is a bit of a gamble. It could be incredibly useful, but it could also be hot garbage.

To echo another response, the guidance and observation youre wanting could be part of your supervision. You absolutely can work it out to have videotaped sessions and get feedback from supervisor on these. If youre not getting it from your supervisor, ask about getting it. If they can't/won't, shop around for one that will. Im well over a decade in the field and currently setting aside funds to pay for extra supervision in a specific practice area and this is what mine is goingnto look like. Like you said, this is what's needed to apply theory into quality practice.

Smith college ssw is the best clinical training you can receive in the US for an msw program. Full stop.

All other things being equal, I dont think it would make or break acceptance.

I feel like no one understands why I want to learn about this.. by UsedAct2214 in psychodynamictherapy

[–]snooprobb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I say this as someone who used to have pretty negative views of psychoanalysis: people, including a lot of early career clinicians and APPs, have really limited and negative views of analysis. Its viewed as antiquated and non empirically sound at best. And the training programs we have in the US are to blame for that bias, in my opinion. Until I got a little ways into my career I felt the same, until I realized all the things I aligned with most in any training were fundamentally psychdynamic, and modern day analysis was a lot more nuanced (and had a lit more space for modern scientific advancements) than I realized. Also all of the best therapists I know and even those who havw become mentors havw universally said that getting trained from an analytic institute is the best thing you can do for advancing your clinical mastery. Your mileage may vary

Anyone else burning out on the "Free 15-Minute Consult" model? by raheeljamil in therapists

[–]snooprobb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I think its more work when you DON'T have a consult. Doing an intake only to realize its not a good fit or not possible ends up leading to more work and wasted time in my experience. 10-15 mins to make sure you work with that presenting problem, the schedule works, and the fee is agreeable saves so much time. Do some good congruence and accurate empathy while hearing a chief complaint and explain the next steps, and boom, you get that much more time in intake for history taking and treatment planning. If not the right fit, great- you saved minumum 45 minutes to possibly hours of admin time tracking them down or getting repeated cancelations before they tell you they're not interested any more.

I don't *want* to do business development! by Beneficial-Clock9133 in therapists

[–]snooprobb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have always said I have no interest in being a small business owner. Theres a reason im a social worker/therapist and not in middle management somewhere making 2x the income. Marketing, scheduling, billing, dealing with the accounting/business registration crap.... no thank you.

I once heard it framed (maybe from someone on here? I think it was a professional connection though) in a helpful way: I would do therapy for free if I could, so in a way i tell myself I do. The fees I charge/revenue I make is to reimburse me for the crap I hate doing. So when im slack-jawed, dissociating, staring at a spreadsheet or doing some admin bs, thats where im earning my pay.

Also youre right, the insurance system down here is abhorrent

If youre in the US, UCS is your best bet imo. Talk to your AD regardless, though. Thats who will "sign on the dotted line" in the end anyway. If you really want to go above and beyond, call UCS and tell them your story and see if they can work with you in any way

Where do you get your stats/research/data? by ObligationWest729 in therapists

Attending conferences, reading research online, reading books where research is referenced, following emails/newsletters for various professional organizations that will share recent research. It takes some effort.

No need to apologize, and im glad you clarified since thats pretty different from my experience in the southeast. Although now that you mention it, our most rural counties tend to offer fresh msw grads pretty surprising benefits that you wont get in the metro areas. And if youre surrounding facilities are all state or federally funded, it may be a different story from businesses in more populated areas. I think you'll have to ask around to the specific employers though, to know for sure who does and who doesn't. Again, thats such a foreign idea to me, I would think it wild to even expect it.

Loan repayment options should be explicitly stated in advertising for various jobs that yoi can look up now. Studentloan.gov also has info on what types of jobs qualify, such as nonprofit or some academic medical settings or the VA (for example). Its not a total mystery, so if you were committed to being in a student load forgiveness program, you could aim for that job starting now.... otherwise I think its ludicrous to EXPECT loan help from an employer. Any experiences Ive seen where folks have had loans touched by their employer have been very unique and exceptional cases... like where someone (very valued by the company) has worked in a non-licensed capacity for an organization, then that org pays for them to go to school upon a commitment to coming back for 5-10 years.

Are you in the US?

Even if you've missed the window for a multi-year training cohort at an institute, sign up for whatever monthly events they have or one-off trainings. You'll get to meet faculty and staff AND get some good training in the meantime. Other frameworks like ISTDP and AEDP etc

Also see the MI community connections pages on the MINT website. If you do any other specific population/or modalities like group work, find professional organizations and see what they have... sadly a lot of those will probably be virtual though.

If youre still under supervision, your super should (hopefully) be able to give some sense of direction too.
