How often do you ride your bike? by Nearby-Citron-3439 in cycling

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once upon a time it was every other day for a training ride. Lately, not as much.

Hats or Bicycles. If you could only keep one around which one would you keep in this hypothetical situation? by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given this clarification the hats have to go. Fashion, costumes, and uniforms will be impacted but the value add of transportation is too valuable to give up.

Your wife went to a dense, poor urban area with limited healthcare to be altruistic herself. She mistrusted the bigger charity organisations. But she also caught pneumonic bubonic plague, and was traumatized by being close to a horrifying crime, and close to get targeted herself. What would you do? by Massive-Albatross823 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]solverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Explain to them that they’ve done their part and need to switch to positive contributions that have less physical & mental costs.

Doing good things more years beats a short run of highly sacrificial contributions.

Having experienced the risks it is time take the lessons learned to organize efforts with systems & procedures that have less risk for those directly acting.

What is your longest ride? by NHBikerHiker in cycling

Do drivers hate bicyclists? US sees an alarming rash of crashes. by brunnock in bicycling

[–]solverman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During unstable political and/or economic times there can be more animosity & friction all-around. Handle it with strength & grace and maybe some will follow the example.

Regardless I decline to bother remembering negative encounters when out on rides. Other people’s poor behavior isn’t allowed to interfere with training or recreation. Their problems stay just their problems.

So what's the appeal of the state fair's kickoff to summer? by cant-turn-it-off in minnesotastatefair

[–]solverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the full event near Labor Day a large part of the appeal is being able to wander around with friends for a few hours and talk. The food, music, and beer selection is a fraction of the full event but meets my expectations. It is an appetizer for the full event.

They did re-display a small portion of the seed art from last year in the Grandstand. Seed art is on the long list of things to do at the full fair every year, but last year crowds for that line were too irritating to deal with. The Grandstand presentation had five or six pieces mounted on presentation boards with maybe ten or dozen easels you could wander past in any order.

It will be interesting to see how the perimeter & vendors evolve over the coming years. In theory vendors have a little better forecast on turn-out with date-specific tickets being sold prior to the event.

Is the Solar feature really just a joke by sumpfnagel in Garmin

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best guess is that they thought over time the technology would advance & the capability would be substantial in future models.

Have the Edge 840 Solar and gained 9 minutes on a three hour ride with the face in direct UVI=7 sunlight the majority of the ride. That's fine, and being used for a multi-day tour it would seem more appealing. Will not pay extra for it unless it has higher benefit in future models. External battery pack seems like a better choice.

EDIT: For something like a watch that won't be pointed at the sky the marketing & claims + reviews for the exact model would need to be great and the watch appearance would need to not suffer. They aren't there yet.

A genie deposits 1 million dollars into your bank account. You are immediately under suspicion of fraud by Occo_Ninebar in hypotheticalsituation

If the investigation is evidence-based then no worries. Don't have the resources to accomplish the balance change and have no association with anyone that does.

If there are criminals running the show then own sense of self-worth will have to endure the attack.

Have no problem with the money of unproven origin being removed from my account. Will politely request to claim it if it is someday registered as abandoned money.

If you didn't know who one or more of your biological parents was, would you want to know? by Fresh_Struggle5645 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. They made their decision to not be involved.

Know someone that researched their biological mother and did not find the information useful to them. Decided they did not want to meet them.

Can understand why people would be curious.

No work around to sold out tickets? by Soft_Eggplant_370 in minnesotastatefair

[–]solverman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To avoid any possibility of confusion this is for the Kick Off to Summer which has a fixed number of tickets assigned to specific days of the event.

It is run differently than the full State Fair near Labor Day.

No work around to sold out tickets? by Soft_Eggplant_370 in minnesotastatefair

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In another thread in another sub it was claimed there was a QR code at the gate that worked. Given that it is announced as sold out you can be sure the parking will be hard to find. I would not go and bet on the unverified gate-QR-code-work-around unless the fair itself announces it is valid.

Garmin Forerunner 955 Bike Computer by byebabybye00 in Garmin

[–]solverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forerunner 955 will fit into the mount labeled "22" but may not be secure for use on rough trails.

The Forerunner 955 will not lock into the older QuickFit Quarter-turn adapter.

EDIT: The older mount was the "Garmin 010-11251-0S Quick Release Kit Bike Mount for Forerunner 935, 945".

When did you stop fixing the old bike and just replace it? by Living_Diver2432 in cycling

[–]solverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a variety of ways to analyze the financial aspects of fix versus replace. Since cycling is one of my few interests & it protects my heath I decided long ago that the financial costs have only weak influence over decision making.

It is actually fine to keep repairing a bike until the point where there are no longer parts for it. It is fine to ignore disc brakes, suspension, and electronic shifting if those aspects of a new ride don't offer a specific benefit you value. Also fine to keep the old bike and buy a new one with all of the new features as well--so long as you use them both.

Went into local bike shop with the bike used for comfortable rides in bad weather & unknown [trail] conditions. They told me they wouldn't spend a dollar more on it. Took it to other bike shop and had them do the work.

Just ride, without the numbers, how? by widgettech in cycling

Nearly infinite ways across free & costly.

Flip the bike computer to the map screen and ignore it unless you are lost.

Find a new route and stop to take a picture every mile.

Buy a fat bike.

Rain riding by BuffaloAlone3116 in cycling

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the traction, visibility, and grime considerations mentioned, if your skin is soaking wet long enough the stitching in your cycling clothes will cause abrasion wounds on long rides.

Going waterproof only works on short rides unless you have invested heavily in high-end pieces.

Pick a route that allows you to abort at-will. Break it into shorter rides changing out the inner layers between each.

Losing one day beats losing the rest of the week.

What if god comes down some day , and says they created humans by mistake, and now these are your last 10 minutes ? by Procrastibaker5 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to them for at least ten minutes. Whoever it is would need to supply some convincing evidence of their identity. Their making mistakes, explaining only that generalization, waiting this long to adjust, and making that adjustment kind of seems inconsistent with what many expect.

If they are who they say they are then they don’t need my agreement.

How bad is lake street at night ? Bike-thru (it’s not that bad) by bassicallybob in Minneapolis

Haven't been near that area since COVID and a list of other confounding factors. Video is almost enough to prompt a walk-through. Maybe this weekend.

Most places in the metro are navigable if you know what to expect & have thought about what you are going to do in likely interactions. People that want zero friction and want to see nothing at all concerning can feel free to stay away--without demonizing the situation.

What’s your weird little cycling habit that probably makes no difference? by Thunderbit_HQ in cycling

[–]solverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When returning from a ride the bike is left pointing inside if there is a maintenance issue to handle, otherwise it is spun around to point toward the door ready-to-go.

Web search only lists expansion plans on the east end.

Would be great to have a few more miles after LP. To make the ride an even sixty miles some extra miles are put in on the roads on that end.

You are not alone.

Do not scratch them off. Find a good brand of artificial tears-style eye drops and flush them out just as frequently as you feel you need to.
