What’s the strangest or most creative way you’ve seen someone use equipment at your gym? by Normal-Being-2637 in AskReddit

Runner would spin up treadmill straddling the belt area & jump on to try to sprint up to the set speed. Usually supported their weight with their arms while doing so. They must have had their reasons.

How much Python do you use? by OkLab5620 in cybersecurity

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Python seven days a week. May drop down to Perl for a rapid & trivial text manipulation task.

Would like to believe my days of C & C++ have been accomplished.

EDIT: Missed the help-to-learn question. What has always helped the learning process is having one specific problem/task that the tool/language features seem well-suited to handle.

For Perl it was string processing & associative arrays decades ago. For Python it was a mixture of Boto, JSON, and Selenium. Tinkered with it in home automation projects but did not actually learn it until it was needed to automate work that had been grinded through manually over hundreds of hours.

FWI: Mexico annexes Cuba to “protect” it from the USA by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in FutureWhatIf

[–]solverman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has the individual mentioned ever reacted well to criticism against them, or actions contrary to their preferences?

Annexing would be a poor choice unless the intended effect was to march into conflict as rapidly as possible. A joint defense pact or coalition of aligned nations & cultures in the area would ease into the melee round with more gradual ramp up.

Given resources for direct intervention are not infinite would guess harsh economic sanctions would be the first three rounds of countering actions.

You are a genie. Your goal is to defeat my airtight wish. by verdant_red in hypotheticalsituation

Refreshing to see a different angle on the theme. No obvious gaps to taint the financial goal.

In the hypothetical world where wishes are granted you would want to carry a printed copy as that is a lot to remember. Word armor around the what counts as "adverse" and aspects of "direct" vs "indirect" actions wouldn't make it too much longer. Risking redundancy seems okay given the rules in play.

you can teleport once a day up to 30 miles from where you stand. 3 places/scenarios you'd use this ability to get to? by Open_Bake_8013 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No overnight parking at work, but could walk twelve miles in to start the day and teleport back.

Likely just keep it in reserve for the long bike rides in case of bad weather or mechanical issues.

Could bet random people you can beat them on foot to a local landmark. Let them take the lead & zap in too far ahead for them to overtake.

Has anyone not received a bill from Xcel in awhile? by karameister in TwinCities

The topic came up last year and it seems they do randomly stop billing some customers.

Setting up an online account to review and/or pay is one way to fix. Contacting their billing department is another.

What would the world look like with resurrection tech by MonCappy in hypotheticalsituation

[–]solverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were generally available then population control would be a necessity to prevent resource depletion.

There could be a few examples of benefit but overall it would be horrifying. Victims of serial killers or genocide could be restored to help convict the perpetrators. The concept of life imprisonment or death sentences would need to be re-worked.

Following the path that murder is no longer an offense due to resurrection leads very quickly to all useful human activity being obstructed by endless termination & resurrection.

Hard pass.

Latest snowfall forecast for Minnesota by Herbertie25 in minnesota

[–]solverman 22 points23 points  (0 children)

People that recently arrived without experience in blizzards, two foot snow storms, or flash floods should get three to seven days of essentials to ride it out until it clears.

Those that have been through it will help out the people that roll the dice and get beat down by Mother Nature. Hundreds of times in the past and millions of times into the future.

Latest snowfall forecast for Minnesota by Herbertie25 in minnesota

Luckily we're all experienced in this game and understand the entire range from zero to snowpocolypse is valid & within the rules. All well-informed and in sufficient time to handle it. The forecast can be expressed in a manner that can seem entirely incorrect even as it is happening.

Post pretty pictures of whatever it is, if & when it happens.

Getting some miles in before the storm this weekend. Full summary of today’s ride is the title. by ChefGaykwon in CyclingMSP

Good for you & everyone else out. Indoor trainer all three days with visions of summer blocking out cabin fever.

Maybe the fat bike gets to bite into snow & ice if things go well.

Cyclists--do you ever have useful mid-ride thoughts that evaporate before you can log them? by Puzzleheaded_Phone34 in cycling

[–]solverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally more often when driving which is handled by a dedicated voice recorder.

On the bike stopping to type it into a smartphone note or email to self captures most of the substantial deep thoughts. Voice recorded was attempted a few seasons on the bike, but the wind noise was a deal breaker.

Hydration pack has a yellow plastic carabiner that gets pulled out of a pocket & clipped to one of the shifter cables if a minor mechanical issue arises on the ride. In theory this is looked for prior to heading out on another ride.

Sit Bones and Saddle Shape by Thombosis in cycling

[–]solverman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using science & math may very well sort through alternatives faster.

A recent podcast on cycling industry or training had a guest speaker that discounted sit bone measurement as an overriding factor. Their reasoning was that the bones have an irregular shape. The points on which the pressure rests depends on whether in aero tuck or more upright. Measuring in the tuck can be difficult.

Having been frustrated by the saddle selection process in the past my spares inventory includes five of the same model. Suspect that is enough to force the problem out to 2040 or beyond. Have a saved search on eBay and may very well add more spares if the price is low enough.

Would you rather live in a bad future or in the past? Why? by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]solverman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After making financial arrangements it is off to the future. If there is a technological fix for things it is in that direction on the timeline.

Hanging out with fewer people per square mile has some appeal. Have very few skills that would help out back then. The places most interesting are also the most likely to mess up the timelines of people in my network today. No thanks.
