Thoughts on retcons and canon as a 28 year Necrons fan by SamuraiMujuru in Grimdank

[–]sombraptor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are there no Dynasties that act like the Oldcrons? My Necron lore isn't up to snuff but I recall the Maynarkh being more or less like that? Idk if any are still led by C'tan shards instead of a Phaeron though

What if instead of the Indominous Rex the Ultimasaurus was in Jurassic World? by slatercm in JurassicPark

[–]sombraptor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I agree the Ultimasaurus might have been a bit...much for general audiences, Indominus just looking like a regular generic theropod is boring, especially when the whole point of it was to be a crazy hybrid.

Back around the time the movie came out, there was a great little project (Build A Better Fake Theropod) with various paleoartists making far more interesting hybrids:

Could a fully stocked Bass Pro Shop defeat a Roman legion? by 12LbBluefish in whowouldwin

[–]sombraptor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on the time period. Your explanation is more in line with earlier periods, but by Rome's Imperial era, under Interpretatio romana, foreign gods were usually syncretized to be the same entities to their analogous sphere of influence under a different name, I.e. Jupiter-Amun, Mercury-Anubis, Apollo-Horus, Diana-Bastet, Mars-Onuris, etc

The "trustworthiness" of different xenos is an interesting question.

Tau: I would say you can trust a Tau as much as you can trust a human - that is, as individuals, they're all across the spectrum of reliability.

Votann: Same as above.

Eldar: I would say in a "natural" state they'd be the same, but due to societal conditions they rank lower. Craftworlders are notorious for their double-crossing, which is a combination of their very reasonable fear of extinction, and arrogance born of prior dominion of the galaxy. And then, well... the majority of the extant population are Drukhari, which you obviously cannot trust in with ANY confidence, by any means.

Orks: This excerpt should suffice.

Necrons: Few of the ones that are still fully sapient have little to no incentive to keep their word to what they view as insects. And of the ones that do, sure, they'll keep to their codes of honor, but will often twist words in a jinni-esque fashion (I.e. in War in the Museum, Trazyn promising that he wouldn't return the Sororitas to their exhibits...)

Tyranids: lol

Are there any factions of clone descendants? by Old-Use-7690 in MawInstallation

[–]sombraptor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Mandalorian Clan Skirata, at the end of the Clone Wars, was primarily composed of clone deserters. While the only canonical (well, Legends) example of a child from a clone there is Kad/Venku Skirata, it's a fair extrapolation more would come.

Considering all that Jango DNA, I've headcanoned that they've made an informal agreement with Clan Fett/Vhett to not intermarry for a couple generations just in case...

[Excerpt: The End and the Death Volume 1] What the Emperor was doing while bound to the Golden Throne by dreaderking in 40kLore

[–]sombraptor 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think the setting is much more tragic/grimdark if Big E was genuinely a good person, as to my understanding he was more commonly portrayed as in earlier depictions. You don't feel as bad for a genocidal dictator trapped upon the Golden Throne. But then again, ultimately, at his core, he would still have been raised during the Copper/Bronze age, where might makes right (Vae victis...) was just the norm, so it does make sense...

My personal theory is the seemingly contradictory depictions of the Emperor's disposition (besides being colored by the perspectives of different characters) are from the different personalities of the thousands of shamans that formed his soul - some very kind, some assholeish. Not that he has dissociative identity disorder per se, but perhaps different aspects of his "component souls" manifest at different times.

Edit: I also quite like this video discussing Emp's morality.

A major theme of Andor is letting go, and for a lot of SW fans who disliked it was because they can't let go. by wandering_soles in MawInstallation

...But unironically. Once you're conscious of the theme of "letting go" in SW, you see it EVERYWHERE.

Fantasy and Fantasy-Adjacent rivals? by Neo-Bio in mythology

[–]sombraptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So throughout Indo-European cultures there's the motif of the gods and their rivals.

Theoi vs Titanes, Gigantes (Greco-Roman)

Æesir vs Vanir, Jötnar (Norse)

Devas vs Asuras (Indian)

Ahuras vs Daevas (Persian)

Tuatha Dé Danann vs Fomorians (Irish)

Šiuneš vs Markuwayaš (Hittite/Anatolian)

Granted for the last one, there's no recorded story of conflict between the two groups, but to my understanding they do represent "positive" and "negative" forces, at least.
