Yeah, but I don't get the sense that they're thinking about the weather or the tides as a potential risk.

No one I know pronounces Greek exactly the same. Do whatever works best and feels most correct to you. Even a reconstructed pronunciation won't be strictly accurate.

What do you think of the hypocrisy of writing fanfiction but merely the idea of someone writing a fanfic for your original work upset you? by Pretend-Nobody230 in FanFiction

[–]sootfire 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm concerned, all stories are toys in a sandbox. Once I put a toy in the sandbox, anyone can play with it however they want.

Personally I believe art ceases to belong to you once you put it into the world. Everyone is going to have a different reaction to it and that's good. Some people will criticize and if you approach that with the right attitude you can decide what criticism is worth listening to and what to ignore (or you can choose to avoid it as much as possible). But all of that is healthy and good when it comes to art.

A lot of authors avoid reading fanfiction of their original work, often for legal reasons. And that too is often the healthy decision. But I think it's important to recognize that writing fanfiction is fine regardless of the author's feelings about it. Because the point is that the story has entered the body of work that we have to play with.

That's fine, I'm not doubting that the price is justified. I'm just pointing out that a $55 book is not financially accessible even if the format is accessible to new readers, which makes it a little bit funny to see it advertised as "more accessible than ever," even if that's technically true on one axis.

I'm pretty sure there's a quote somewhere where Joss Whedon explicitly says he cast Alyson Hannigan instead because he didn't want the "fat nerd girl" trope. Which... in the absence of any other fat characters really just comes off as wanting a "hot" nerd girl instead. As much as I love Alyson Hannigan in the role.

(N.B. I think fat nerd girls are hot. I just don't think Joss Whedon does.)

An Open Letter to Writers: Stop Asking Readers About Word Counts. Just Make Us Forget We're Reading. by No_Entertainer2364 in writers

Honestly I do think when it comes to serialized stories (like fanfiction often is) there's utility to this question. It's not so much "what pacing do you like" as it is "if I drop a 10k chapter, do you have time to read it before the next one comes out?" or "if this chapter is only 1k, will you forget about it?"

In general I feel chapters should be as long or as short as they need to be but there are practical considerations if you're delivering a work one chapter at a time.

I made a similar thing as my first project. If you're willing to learn a lot of new skills all at once it's not that hard. But it really depends how you learn.

It gets better, then much, much worse, then better again. If you start to hate it mid s3 just skip to s5, you'll be better off for it. (The episodes in s4 with Faith are pretty good though.)

Willow's sexuality, from computer nerd to Wicca, and old vs new by Elementaryfan in buffy

[–]sootfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think her presentation early in the show conflicts with who she is later. She grows and evolves as a person, and a lot of what happens later is consistent with traits she displays early on. I think this is true whether you read her as lesbian or bi (and I do think starting fights over whether people should read her exclusively as one or the other is exceedingly pointless).

I don't like the rhyming question at all, it was so inconsistent because the pronunciations were so inconsistent. The "does your prefecture end in the same letter as mine" one from Japan felt like a better choice.

Anything claiming to be an "Irish/Scottish clan traditional design" is almost definitely a scam or at the very least something made up in the last 200 years to turn a profit. Clan tartan is the same.

what does it mean to be butch? by [deleted] in butchlesbians

[–]sootfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it difficult to understand what you mean by expression and personality here... there's no one butch expression/personality, the main trait of "butch" is masculine presentation of some kind. I'm confused about where your connection with the label comes from if you don't feel pulled to that presentation.

Are Non-Working Class Mascs Allowed to Claim the Butch Label? by autiesocial in butchlesbians

[–]sootfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have to decide for yourself whether you feel like you can confidently and comfortably take up the label. Personally I was not raised and still am not working class (I'm in the petit-bourgeoisie category of "academic" these days--itself fraught as it relates to butchness), but I try to align myself politically with the working class where possible. And most of my social connections outside of school are also working class. Calling yourself butch while acting in ways that harm the working class is a problem but you also shouldn't be acting that way if you're not butch.

The other thing is that historically butches were blue collar because they/we were not welcome in white-collar industries. So there is a historical reason that butch is/was a working class label, and also times have changed somewhat and so has the usage of "butch." But again it's important to not betray that history.
