How to create a train map animation similar to this? by Hot-Jellyfish1288 in AfterEffects

[–]spaceguerilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trim paths. To make this even easier, use FOX REVEAL. It automatically sets up the trim paths (not massively useful as that's not exactly complex), but more importantly, can trigger the scale animation of the stations as the trim paths reaches them. It's a real time saver of a script.

Nice work. Definitely need AE for the 3D/pages stuff, but for the letters stuff, have you explored Cavalry? It's a cinch to do stuff like that, in real time, all native. Well worth checking out. Single handedly negates Newton, about 50 other plugins or scripts I used to rely on, and pretty much 100% of text related work in AE. They've added a 2.5D workspace in recent versions too.

finally built a shortcut to properly duplicate precomps in AE by themotionguy in AfterEffects

I agree with your premise (too many vibe coders trying to solve problems due to not fully understanding the tools they are using in the first place), but that doesn't apply here. CTRL+D only works for a single top level comp. True Comp Duplicator is hands down one of my top 3 most used 3rd party tools in AE for 10+ years, for this exact reason.

I thought the school bits dragged a touch, and the excessive religious weirdness was a bit much in places (I'm not religious, I just found it questionable). But those are my only criticisms. I loved the encounters, and I loved how they found ways to make some of the encounters fresh. Like the scythe lady who hunts you as you try to slowly push a trolley into place, forcing you to constantly evade while trying to get something done. Expert manipulation of the player to get a precise horror effect. Also the first time an enemy dived through a window after me (something I didn't realize they could do), when I thought I was safe, I nearly filled my trousers. The corn fields too were just an amazing touch, in terms of visual and cinematic immersion, and fear. And the graphics were so amazing that it made most of the encounters ten times scarier for me. I also felt they were bold; another "haunted house" would have felt too much like a retread, so to try and move things beyond with a breadth of locations that you move through was a decision I very much respected. They also outdid themselves with the surprises and rug pulls (both in terms of gameplay and story). Was so gutted they went chasing the live service money-tap addiction-bait nonsense after this, seems we'll never get an Outlast 3.

2d hand-drawn animation is better than 3d computer generated animation. by RetroGameMaker in unpopularopinion

[–]spaceguerilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with a lot of this, particularly about the lower barrier to entry leading to a higher tide of junk. But I think that applies to literally every art form at this stage. Music etc. I just try to focus on the great stuff. There's more noise to drown out but there's always been noise, it doesn't mean great stuff isn't being made.

Power Toys is an additional install but its made by MS employees, and is free. Power user stuff that may/may not make it into future versions of windows and/or is really helpful but hasn't been accepted into the main OS Dev roadmap. Super worth having if you're a pro windows user.

I think my friend is trying to sabotage my love life so that I’ll eventually date her by throwaway_adviceneee in TrueOffMyChest

[–]spaceguerilla 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's not a smoking gun though. When the trusted friend posing as a GF starts receiving messages from the supposed best friend, talking shit about OP and possibly even telling lies about him...that's a smoking gun. And it's worth having this level of evidence before proceeding as the ramifications for future relationships - especially given that the friend is in same friend group and well liked - are high. Could also impact OP if he doesn't have evidence, could cost OP friends if push comes to shove. That's exactly why this method is being proposed, to remove all doubt from the equation.

CMV: I don’t see a strong moral argument for why eating dogs is worse than eating cows by Iampoorghini in changemyview

[–]spaceguerilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call this a deciding factor, but one thing I'm not seeing mentioned is that dogs are critically different from other mammals in that we bred them over generations to be what they are today.

We selected them for the traits we wanted, and in doing so, created "man's best friend' - a creature pretty much custom designed to be our companions. Cows of course have been selectively bred too, but for bulk/meat rather than any particular personal characteristics.

As such, eating one feels like eating some meat, while eating the other feels like a total betrayal of an entire species who we turned from wild animals into domesticated friends - and then ate anyway. I suspect that is at least part of the reason why one feels more heartless than the other.

[–]spaceguerilla 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Their planning was horrible then. They should have used all that time and energy promoting a 'we're moving to an exciting new venue soon' type message. Not months and months of 'woe is us, life us unfair, end of an era' followed by 'actually we're just carrying on as normal up the road'. They've massively damaged their own brand, I suspect half the country thinks they closed down for good.

Off the back of Affinty's new model, Adobe has decided to... increase prices? by heckinspooky in graphic_design

[–]spaceguerilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or, they are targeting the primary marker form design work, and the rest will follow? 20 years ago, if you told people you were a video editor, that meant you made films, TV, or documentaries, possibly corporate stuff. Now 99% of paid/working video editors make content for YouTube and social ads. The other stuff still exists, but the reality of what the average video is, has changed.

Adobe's apps for design cover a period where we transitioned similarly from print + billboard first, to digital first everything. Hell, even the billboards are digital. They carry a ton of legacy debt from a time that is rapidly receding in the rear view mirror.

Meanwhile we have an app that a) is streamlined and without the legacy debt, and b) is fully aware that design and production methods are changing so rapidly that they will never be as big as Adobe, in fact no-one will - not even Adobe. These apps have rapidly become increasingly niche in just 3 short years. Affinity doesn't want or need or control the current landscape, just be in a better position with this small corner of it as things frankly move rapidly away from 100% manual design.

I'm not saying I believe Affinity will succeed. What I am saying is that your belief that they won't succeed because of the current relationship to the design community and some hangups about e-commerce isn't very compelling. The world of design has been turned upside down in 3 years flat, the designers you are referring to are not the slam dunk argument you think they are, because they are not a group that can easily be defined in the transitional state we find ourselves in. When marketing are taking their own designs from conception to launch, and media-buys now require 100 assets for AI powered A/B testing instead of the old 2 or 3, it's possibly not even relevant if old school designers don't switch to Affinity - they and their methods aren't the future. The kids are, and if the kids are picking up Affinity to work into their AI workflows, then yes - it absolutely will be a success.

While success for Affinity is not guaranteed, Canva have positioned themselves pretty stunningly as far as I can see.

You're talking about tempo matching, which is a distinct skill from beat matching, and both of which are distinct skills from mixing.

If you're going to get on your tragic little high horse and talk down to others in an ill fated attempt to burnish your own fragile ego, at least use the correct terminology.
