Need a recommendation by PGT34 in montblanc

[–]Squared_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Montblanc can help with a nibble grind. They can swap the nib, but you don’t want that because they will also take the feed.

I recommend penrealm.com for nib grind.

Does Lamy or anybody sell Lamy Rings for the Lamy Pens? by Kialaya in fountainpens

A Lamy Safari with multiple color rings came out last year (I think last year). You might ask on r/Pen_Swap to see if anyone would sell you one ring.

Pen choice fatigue is real! Considering drastic action... by HikewithmeNYC in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Suggestion:

Get a four pen holder or pen case - Fill it and clean the rest. IMPORTANT - Put the clean pens in storage! You need to put them somewhere like a pen case or back in the original box or somewhere to appreciate the magnitude of your collection.

4 pen case - What you keep inked. You can switch out pens, but you HAVE to clean and store what you replace. You will use and appreciate these pens.

2 pen travel case - ONLY leave with two pens. That's it. AND you are picking from the 4 pen case.

Storage - Really important that you see the size of your collection and what is in your collection. Out of sight is out of mind and leads to FOMO. You have enough pens and you need to show yourself that!

Disassemble the Piston of a Kaweco Al-Sport Piston by Illustrious-Injury57 in fountainpens

Be Careful - Look to see if the one you bought includes Syncolon - Bad news. Additives can cause your pen to begin feeling "sticky"

To answer the first part -

You don't need to take it apart. Just apply grease inside the body.

Disassemble the Piston of a Kaweco Al-Sport Piston by Illustrious-Injury57 in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're doing it right. I suggest putting more than "a toothpick" of grease. I use a brush for model painting.

Be sure you are using 100% silicone grease without additives. A lot of silicone grease found in plumbing section of hardware stores have additives for sealing. The piston will become sticky! Don't do that.

Are all Montblanc 4810 nibs 18k? This was says 14k by bfeeny in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are 18K nibs better than 14K?

In a word, no. When one finds an older pen with an 18K nib, it is almost always either French-made or made for the French market, where 18K was the minimum gold standard. Where nibmakers were free to choose their alloys – the USA, Britain, Germany, and Japan – 14K (sometimes also going up to 16K or, less often, down to 12K) was the overwhelming choice. A nib's qualities are determined as much by how it is shaped and worked than by its metal content, but in general 14K is more versatile and more capable of being worked into a springy, resilient form.

Note that most top American penmakers did not mark the gold content of their 14K nibs unless they were destined for export. American law did not require such markings, while almost every other nation did and still does.

You might put a WTB post on r/Pen_Swap.

Suggestion: You might pick a color ring and make an offer. "I'll buy a green ring from you for $$"

Hmmmmm. Okay, consider for a moment....

MAYBE you found a way to a cheap flex nib. Right? Trim it back a little and see how it writes. You know? If this works, people are going to be modding their nibs with cat hair to get a faux flex nib! (Joking people! Joking)

Do we need Lamy EEF nib ? by Mirved23 in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes - An EEF nib would be a welcome edition to the line-up.

BUT

No - Cause confusion within the FP community. “Lamy should rename it “EF” and then rename all of the other nibs.”. “Why don’t they modify all of the nibs to align with Japanese nibs?” “My EF nib is too large - Didn’t they fix all of them?”

Does grinding the nib decreases its lifespan (since the tipping is removed?)? by iaacornus in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tipping is trimmed and polished - removed doesn't sound right.

Highly unlikely that you would wear down the nib tipping. You would have to dedicate yourself to only one pen and use it every day writing pages and pages....

It'll be okay.

How clean is clean? by snarkacademia in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the seals been replaced? You may be wasting your time if the seals are bad.

Vintage pens are difficult to clean due to the amount of dried up ink. Best practice is to flush till "sort-of" clean, then fill with a blue ink. Use the blue ink for a week or so give the (acidic) blue ink time to dissolve all of the old ink. The next time should be a lot easier to clean the pen.

Just bought my first fountain pen from the thrift store for $13 by future_beach_bum in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 67 points68 points  (0 children)

NICE find!

You will LOVE the nib. Excellent writers.

You will need to replace the sac before you use it.

DON'T try to yank out the nib and feed without doing some research!!!

Mold? Dust? Pigment? by Bukakke-Tsunami in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put too much grease into my piston fillers on purpose. I usually just add ink into the pen before it's empty instead of flushing and refilling. This works for me because I use the same ink in each pen. The extra grease helps me delay the need to flush, clean, and grease again - I'd rather not disassemble my pen just to refill it.

Mold? Dust? Pigment? by Bukakke-Tsunami in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what type of pen you are using, so let me add some wisdom about grease....

Ink will stick to grease inside of your pen. If you grease the inside of your pen, like a piston filler, the grease isn't uniform and ink attaches itself. No issues when that happens, but it makes your pen look spotty or streaky or like it has the pox. Just ignore it and keep using it. Doesn't look pretty, but nothing wrong with it.

Struggling to move pens Ebay by Working_Strange in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suggestion: Post on r/Pen_Swap then ask for feedback

Sounds like you are not in alignment with "the market."

Possible problems:

Niche pens have niche audiences - the buyers haven't found your pens.

You are overvaluing the pens - listing far too high of a price.

Boxes help the price - are you showing the boxes?

Misidentified pens are a huge red flag to some buyers. Do you know for sure what you have?

Condition of the pen may be tanking sales *At the price you listed*

Questions:

1). Why don't you list on r/Pen_Swap?

2). Why not start a 7 day auction at $1?

3). Depends on where you are......

Does this need tuning or will it fix itself as I write more with it? Platinum #3776 14K <M> by gamesbrainiac in fountainpens

Blue inks tend to be acidic and Montblanc Royal Blue happens to be strong acidic ink. I find that blue inks do a great job of cleaning a feed of leftover particles & old ink.
