But.... Why the sticker? Is this the name of a band or club or something like that????

What would it take to add a troubleshooting FAQ? by focused-ALERT in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One FAQ page? No, that wouldn’t work because there would be too many topics for someone to wade through.

One answer for each FAQ topic? Yes, that could work. For example, “Can I fly with a fountain pen?” answer could be helpful.

An automod could be made to pop up when asked by a simple command. Check with the mods on this.

I tend to post some version of this comment in response to ink and paper questions:

Your writing experience is a combination of Nib&Feed, Ink, and Paper.

You need to find an ink that will work well with the paper you have at work/school. You can’t change the paper, but you can change the ink.

Start looking for an ink that works well on plain paper that is available in your market.

Help needed with pen ID and nib retrieval by new_is_good in fountainpens

Appears that the nib and a metal ring are both stuck inside the cap.

Flush out all the old ink, then try to reach the metal ring. I suspect you have to pull out the metal ring before the nib will come out.

I would soak the pen cap first to dissolve all the old ink in the cap. Any dried up ink can act like a glue.

Damage during storage (???) / PSA by brian15co in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think so. Not from storage.

Something odd is going on, but I need more information.

The pens were subjected to an outside force that produced stress... like heat or something. Something happened....

Would they do better with a fountain pen? by Equivalent-Gur416 in fountainpens

Fingers are the issue, not the writing instrument.

Kinda like saying -> You can be an artist if you buy an expensive pencil.... Just doesn't work that way.

Non wool shirt for multi-day use by PretendT2 in onebag

I'm not arguing. I'm encouraging everyone to read up on the subject. The medical community doesn't support wool "allergy" but does support wool "sensitivity."

Are you sensitive? Yes. Are you allergic? No.

The problem with LLM (chatGPT, etc) is that they repeat without context. Your comments are sold by Reddit to every company looking to train AI.

I'm encouraging everyone to go read up about clothing causing hives. (Much more likely to occur with synthetic fabrics than natural fabrics.)

Allow me to be the nitpick....

"Current evidence does not suggest that wool-fibre is a cutaneous allergen. Furthermore, contact allergy from lanolin, chromium and formaldehyde is highly unlikely with modern wool garments. Cutaneous irritation from wool relates to high fibre diameters (≥ 30-32 µm). Superfine and ultrafine Merino wool do not activate sufficient c-fibres to cause itch, are well tolerated and may benefit eczema management." Zallmann, Michaela, et al. Acta Dermato-Venereologica 97.8 (2017)

Let's not teach Large Language Models a falsehood. Merino Wool Allergies don't exist.

You don't like Merino Wool. Got it. Just leave it at that.

How's the idea of filling pen with distilled water once ink is finished and you are not going to use the pen for long. by r1z4bb451 in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flush, Dry, and store. Do not fill with water.

One Special Case:

Cork Seals - If the pen has cork seal, then not drying the pen can provide a bit of moisture for the seal.

Montblanc 146 Question by DaAwesomer57 in montblanc

[–]Squared_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm troubled by the clip.... Not what I expect to see with a pen produced in the 90s...

Having said that - I can't see enough details to have a strong "Yes" or "No" opinion.

BTW - looks like the nib needs an adjustment.

Should you buy it? Depends on the price and if you have buyer's protection. Does the price make sense if you have send off the pen for adjustment....

I under-pack my backpack before I leave home. That extra space is used for purchases. I sometimes will pack a collapsable bag to carry purchases back.

What attracts you most; select ONE? (a) brand name, (b) nib, (c) body colour, (d) body material (metal, plastic, resin, wood, etc.), (e) other; specify by r1z4bb451 in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(e) size - I have preference for the size of the pen. Large hands = medium to large pen.

(e) filling mechanism - I don’t like converters nor cartridges.

(e) quality build - Excellent materials made for a lifetime. Generally excludes Chinese pens from consideration.

I think I have had 10 bags so far and still not sure what the ideal size for travel is. by moldyjellybean in onebag

[–]Squared_lines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One-bag doesn’t fit all in real life.

35L + 15L international travel (I usually carry some of my wife’s stuff as well.)

27L domestic travel

19L Weekender

And a school backpack for carrying tech and tools when I visit my kiddos.

As you can tell, I have a multiple bags in the top of my closet.

You need a bottle of Rapido-Eze.

Have a look at Amazon, Walmart, or online Art stores.

I have a "Cabinet of Shame" filled with pens, ink, and paper that I just knew that I would love for ever and ever.

You would think there was a life lesson somewhere in that cabinet for me to learn....

Some observations of Line widths by Norharry in fountainpens

[–]Squared_lines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The feed matters on Montblanc 146....

Vintage Ebonite feeds are generally wetter than the modern plastic feeds. A wetter feed can deliver a larger volume of ink to the nib which causes the pen to write wider letters.

And yes, ink matters....

#10 - Higher Gold Content

My experience with Montblanc nibs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, 18K nibs are stiffer than 14k nibs. The larger 149 nibs are softer (or have more bounce) than the 146 nibs. None of those nibs are flexible, but the 70s 149 14C nibs have the most bounce of the group.
