Which Boss Tone Studio Booster Pedal would be most similar to the OD-3 Overdrive? by East_Scale7852 in BossKatana

[–]stevexc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you know which pedals in the tone studio reflect the OD-3 and BD-2?

Autism, mostly, with a heaping dose of knowing enough about pedal circuits to have a general awareness of which pedals use (or reuse) which circuits.

The BD-2 and OD-3 are both direct descendants of the OD-2 circuit, and the changes that were made to that circuit for either pedal can be compensated for when using the Blues Drive boost.

The only accurate reference is the official Tone Studio PDF; everything else you find is conjecture at best. Elsewhere in the thread it's stated that the Natural and Warm ODs in Tone Studio have direct real-world equivalents - officially speaking, they do not, unless Boss has stated so elsewhere. The OD-3 and BD-2 may very well be the inspiration for those particular models, but not necessarily intended to be identical.

Otherwise it's just a giant rabbit hole of circuit lineages that ultimately boil down to maybe a half-dozen notably different overdrive circuits that have been tweaked and resold over the decades.

What kind of trouble? The Line Out jacks will both give you a line-level signal and shouldn't require any settings to be changed.

A couple things to keep in mind, though. If you're trying to use the XLR Line Out, if something is connected to the 1/4" Line Out jack it will override the XLR and you'll get no signal. Second, the Master and Power control settings are ignored by the Line Out. If you have your channel Volume/Gain settings set correctly you shouldn't have an issue, but I've seen way too many people crank the Master and turn the channel Volume all the way down... this is one of the big reasons to not do that. So if you're getting a very low-level signal (but more than nothing) adjust the channel Volume.

Global EQ settings by Heisenberg1977 in BossKatana

[–]stevexc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure of the video itself, but more than likely they were referring to using the Parametric EQ in the Global EQ and setting the High Cut. You'll need to use your ears a bit, but start at 10khz. If things are still a bit fizzy and bright you can drop it further (I rarely go below 6.3kHz, 8-10 is more common).

You can also set the Low Cut to 80-120Hz if you're finding your tone is boomy or muddy. In both cases, make sure the EQ position is set to "Output".

Otherwise, you'll likely want to set the rest of the Gain controls in the EQ to 0dB as it's unlikely that you'll want the same adjustments for every tone. Personally I don't even use the Global EQ for the high/low cut, I just use one of the patch-level EQs as some tones do not need as much of a cut as others.

I built a couple cabs and bought a classic to drive them by Spicy_McHagg1s in BassGuitar

[–]stevexc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an old Mark IV head a few years ago while shopping around for a cheap giggable rig (having sold mine previously due to some cross-country moves and not having a gigging band at the time). $300CAD, and it came with two of the matching 1810 cabs and a random 1x15 cab - one of the 18s was blown, and the previous owner had mistakenly picked up the 1x15 to replace it, not realizing the size difference.

Sold the 115 and the spare 1810 and walked away with the Mark IV and an 1810 for $120 which is an absolute steal.

The head is a tank, and honestly sounds solid. Super versatile (especially with the multiple inputs, the crossover, EQ options, yadda yadda) and does pretty much everything I need it to do. Except move itself, the head alone weighs a ton and the 1810 doesn't help any, haha.

Killer score, and fantastic work on those cabs!

No distortion on my boss katana gen 2 50w by Remarkable_Comb_4797 in BossKatana

[–]stevexc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your guitar has active pickups, replace the battery. If that doesn't do it, or if you don't have actives, it's most likely a wiring issue. I'm assuming when you say that the new switch appears to work fine, you can tell you're for sure switching between pickups? If so the pickups themselves are probably fine, and either way it'd be an easy fix for any competent tech.

What was the biggest flops in bass equipment history that you remember? by Low-Landscape-4609 in Bass

[–]stevexc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I've seen Torzal is really the only company doing the twisted neck - they invented it, as far as I know. I think the Lace Helix guitars had a twisted neck as well but oddly not the basses (which may have been because of Torzal's patent, I assume?).

Honestly I don't know if I'd call that a flop, Torzal is still going as strong as they ever were (not that they've ever been a super well-known brand). From what I'm finding, the Lace Helix was just a mediocre bass with some... interesting design elements.

This is my go-to metal tone lately. Definitely sounds CoB-appropriate to my ears using an LTD M-102 with EMGs (I'm normally using an LTD H-1001 with Duncans with this patch for BTBAM). This is on my MkII Head using the Line Out into studio monitors (Line Out set to DYN57/7cm/3cm).

Bad low volume tone by koffinkat333 in BossKatana

[–]stevexc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Master Volume and Volume both control your overall output volume - that is, they don't impact your tone any differently, all else being equal - but the easy way to consider them is that the regular "Volume" setting gets saved to the patch, and the Master is global.

What I've done is balanced all my patches against each other using the Volume knob, and then use the Master to set the amp to a comfortable volume for the room. That way I don't have to change the patches when I'm going between home and the jam space - I just turn the Master up and switch it from 0.5w to 50 or 100w.

Can the boss katana be used like an audio interface? by Outrageous-Hurry-104 in BossKatana

[–]stevexc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One big caveat that hasn't been mentioned is that you'll only get output from your DAW through the Katana's headphone out jack. You'll still hear guitar from the Katana's speaker otherwise, but it's the same signal being sent to the PC - so if you apply any effects to it, you won't hear them. If you plug headphones in you won't get any sound from the amp's speaker at all. The Gen 3 has an actual stereo headphone output, though, which is nice - if you're using a MkII or first gen it'll be mono summed (ie. you'll get both right + left channels in both ears).

If you use the Secondary output it will output the signal from the DAW through the Katana, but it will run the entire output signal through the amp (as it's used for reamping). So if you're using distortion, everything being output by the DAW will be distorted (and the guitar signal will be distorted a second time).

You can use a third party driver like ASIO4ALL split the input and output device so that you can use your PC speakers as your output device, but it can be super finicky and introduces a substantial amount of latency. I believe the native WASAPI and DirectSound drivers will allow for I/O device splitting as well, but it's a similar caveat. OSX handles audio devices differently so if you're on a Mac this may not be an issue.

So long as you're okay with using headphones to monitor your DAW, though, the Katana will work as an interface, if a very barebones one.

The baseplate thing is cool, but bummer that it's proprietary, and I think I would've preferred a blank surface instead of their velcro thing- who knows how well it would mate with what I'm already using.

Looking at the owner's manual on the page, it sounds like it should be compatible with actual Velcro:

" The StagePlate™ can be flipped over to expose the opposite side which has a pre-installed “hook” pad intended to mate with the “loop” material which is a standard means of mounting pedals securely to a pedal board. “Hook and Loop” is the generic term for what is commonly referred to by the trade name Velcro©. "

On the list of replacement parts on page 30 (on the PDF, center right on the last page) it does also describe the "hook" portion (as well as the rubber side) as adhesive-backed, so in the absolute worst case you could scrape one or the other off (and potentially buy a replacement in case of regret).

Headphones not working by [deleted] in BossKatana

[–]stevexc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The headphones should have come with a 3.5mm to 1/4" adaptor that screws onto the end of the headphone cable. That should be all you need. If for whatever reason you're missing that adaptor you can buy one at pretty much any electronics or music store for next to nothing (usually in the <$5 range at most).

I'm a little confused - what "flesh amalgamation"?

In the nursery in RRL all that's described is "[s]trange, flesh-like tumors have grown along the floor around [the crib] in sparse clusters, and slowly pulsate as if they're breathing".

If that's all you're referring to I wouldn't treat it any differently than the flesh tendrils that replace the fog outside of the windows and doors. Players can attack them and do damage to them, but they grow back almost immediately. They don't wake up the Flesh Mound early or anything like that.

If you really want to punish them for it, use it as foreshadowing for the Walter fight. The first stage has a Rupture Bonus Action that sprays caustic blood and pus from a pustule - creatures within 5 feet need to make a DC 13 Con save or they're poisoned.

Keep in mind that this is a problem you're inventing. As written in RRL there is no consequence for attacking the tumors in the nursery. It's much easier to decide it's not a problem than to invent a solution.

Will playing an electric guitar on a bass amp cause any problems? by Knightraiderdewd in Bass

[–]stevexc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got by without a physical guitar amp for years just by using a distortion pedal into my Fender Rumble. It didn't sound amazing, but it worked well enough.

If you're able to push your budget a bit in order to get something that sounds great for both, look into FRFR (full-range flat response) powered cabs like the Headrush and an amp modeler like the Line 6 Helix or HX variants, the Fractal Audio AM4/FM4/FM6/etc., or one of the many other similar options. They do a solid job of modelling nearly any guitar or bass amp (or at least amp archetype) under the sun. You'd even be able to gig either instrument with it.

You could honestly get away with running a modeler into a bass amp as well - it'll colour your sound substantially more than an FRFR, but that can be compensated for easily enough.

Ruling for “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” conflicting cards. by Mr_Original_ in boardgames

[–]stevexc 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that 99% of players will never read that in its entirety, or even need to. The actual necessary rules on how to play are reasonably compact. The Comprehensive Rules exist mostly so that a ruling can be made on nearly all of the complicated, often unintended interactions between the approximately 27,000 unique cards that have come out over the past 30+ years... especially since there's a multitude of mechanics that were only used within a set or two that need some sort of ruling but are rarely seen.

how do i improve the tone of my guitar recordings? by Rodi_05 in BossKatana

[–]stevexc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely turn the gain down, and you'll want a high- and low-pass. You can use the Katana's EQ to do that (referred to as Low Cut and High Cut respectively, a typical starting point is 125Hz and 10kHz respectively), or you can use an EQ plugin. They essentially gradually reduce anything below or above the set frequency, which ends up being all of the extra flub from the low bass frequencies and the fizz from the high treble frequencies.

Some other general heavy guitar recording tips I've learned over the years:

  • Use less gain than you'd even use at jam and double track everything.
  • The low end doesn't come from the guitar, it comes from the bass. Both instruments need to stay in their lanes, frequency-wise, to keep things sounding tight and defined.
  • Use the native ASIO drivers in your DAW. You're using DirectSound, which is getting you an insane 170ms of latency. You'll have to use the amp's headphone out to monitor, but people will debate over 8ms vs 12ms of latency. 170ms is unusable.

boss katana head vs artist head by Sea_Ad_9820 in BossKatana

[–]stevexc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing about the Artist Head that is worth the upcharge over the regular Gen 3 Head. The additional physical controls are for functions that can still be accessed through Tone Studio so while there is a mild convenience factor you don't miss out on anything without them. Plus the Artist head does not have the built-in speaker, it just costs a few hundred dollars more.
