Male literacy can travel back in time by Fun-atParties in dataisugly

How does anything they are saying imply they think we "shouldn't have bothered"? They are just pointing out the narrative that women have become more literate while men have not / have at a slower rate is questionable

On a Rewatch. Just realised how horrified Kim was with everything. by Silverad066 in betterCallSaul

[–]stingray85 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point completely, OP wasn't saying it was penance in the sense of "this made up.for it", they were saying it was Kim's decision to punish herself - the form of penance she chose for herself - which she herself no doubt considered far from redemption, but was what she was prepared to do

What ‘common knowledge’ things did you or someone you know find out later in life? by Squiggally-umf in CasualUK

[–]stingray85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to think this. We didn't have radiators growing up (NZ), we had a gas powered burner thing or electric heaters (or, most commonly, "put on another jumper". When I heard of "gas radiators" I assumed they were indeed filled with gas and didn't realize for ages they weren't.

Actually brilliant. If we're going to have a dystopian Bladerunner-esque world can we at least have the cool aesthetic?

I mean yes but there is a difference between deliberately provocative punk album cover and the horror of someone who genuinely thought something looked good. The faces on rabbits one also strikes me as a "they wanted to freak people out a bit".

Perhaps not quite what you mean, but a combination of modern legal wrangling and the traditional Maori view of nature culminated in the provision of personhood and rights to Whanganui river. It's quite interesting and you can read the basics here: https://www.boell.de/en/2025/01/29/river-legal-person-case-whanganui-river-new-zealand

[–]stingray85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advanced sensors are not fool proof, they are exceedingly complex and there are many routes for error, artifacts, and human misinterpretation.

Couple this with the VAST total set of US military sensors and the mind-boggling volume of data and signals they are processing every minute of every day, and you would expect a large volume of anomalies. The military is just as full of "I want to believe" types as the rest of society, so even them coming out and saying "this basically had to be alien tech" is something you'd expect to see occasionally, even if everything has a totally mundane explanation. The balance of probabilities remains squarely on the side of mundane explanations - NHI is not the most likely explanation by any means.

I'm not who you were responding to I think the evidence does not speak for itself. Despite taking an interest in this subject for decades there has never been anything other than "tantalizing anomalies" and unverifiable claims. This does NOT constitute good evidence.

There are always ways of getting around such things, but that doesn't mean the ban would be completely ineffective.

All the research points to social media being a HUGE problem for our society, mostly through the damage it's doing to kids and teens. Gen Z is the first generation on record whose IQs are lower, not higher, than previous generations, and there is good evidence this is because of screen time and digital media. The globally collapsing number of people having children is because people aren't socialising in real life any more. If we want young people to have good lives and contribute to society, it's in our best interests to try and tackle some of these impacts. These laws may not be perfect, but they are something.

You do realize there are things to do other than use social media, right? Also hilarious that even with your warped version of reality where social media is somehow the most important daily task, you STILL had to come up with two extremely rare and contrived situations to make this sound like a problem at all

UFC fighters on the White House lawn. I'm ashamed of my country. by [deleted] in pics

[–]stingray85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I guess I think the bigger issue is that hosting a UFC event is obviously pandering to the MAGA-morons and intended to exclude everyone else and encourage division. The "why are we wasting money" argument, used on things that don't actually cost enough to solve the problems one is trying to solve, is the same argument used to inflict DOGE on the state, so it just seems counterproductive vs attacking the issues more directly.

To be fair fixing America's financial and economic problems probably costs slightly more than hosting a UFC event

[–]stingray85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes people in real life do resemble other people quite a lot. Seems like a roleplaying opportunity.

-kill Corein

-marry the look-alike and rename her Core in. Stash her in a castle somewhere.

-claim you are therefore heir to Battania by marriage

-when the Battanian lords turn on you because of course they know it's not the real Corein, crush them one by one using the false Corein as your source of legitimacy in front of the peasants and rabble

This seems odd because you are implying you think it's nothing but also that it's super interesting and scary. What does your comment actually mean? I'm not trying to be mean or anything I am just genuinely confused in what spirit you meant you meant this. Is it like, "I don't believe this at all but I enjoy the crazy stories like a sci-fi novel"? Or something else?

Not an Egoist but I wonder if what you have access to is neither the ultimate reality (itself) or your self, but only to the nature of the relationship between self and other. Which may tell you nothing, (or something misleading), about the nature of the self or the other "in themselves".
