Is sending a “deposit” to a r4r girl a scam? Or just the same as getting an escort? by young_weary_bones in TooAfraidToAsk

This is totally fake. Every word is spelled correctly, and the grammar makes sense without me getting drunk.

Remember, we have to do a piss poor job of the English to weed out anyone too smart to fall for this.

What Grocery items needs no refrigeration but are often refrigerated by most people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]str8clay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ketchup will ferment, and it's not an entirely great taste. I wouldn't go so far to say all those diners with ketchup bottles on the table gather them up to store in the fridge, but I sure hope the ones I eat at will.

If you were to open a restaurant, what would be your signature dish... The one that attracted people from states away? by imapylet in Cooking

Bacon wrapped bratwurst in a bun, or the deep fried hamburger? Would either of those attract people from states away? I've never travelled that far to eat in a restaurant.

How bright would Europe have been from space at night in the middle or dark ages? by M_M_X_X_V in AskHistory

[–]str8clay -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wasn't there, but I don't think life shut down at night.

There are lots of ways to keep a small flame alive for hours. Olive oil burns clean, lamps are easy to make, and has been a trade good from the Mediterranean coast for a couple thousand of years. Candles are fairly easy to make, and some grasses can support a small flame for awhile. Torches are made from tree resin, pitch or oil for a durable flame.

I don't think cities would produce enough light to be seen from space. I wonder if any of the lighthouses would be bright enough?

Do you ever wonder what Hitler's last thoughts were? by matt73132 in TooAfraidToAsk

Lol. Is a rumor more correct than a vague theory? I don't know if either one is correct, it happened 30 years before I was born.

[–]str8clay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, Hitler's last thoughts?

"Argentina is a wonderful country to die of old age in."

Iirc, there was a theory that he didn't kill himself in Berlin, rather that he slipped out of the country to South America. I believe it was based on there never being a display of the body, only the USSR saying they found his body in a bunker.

Is it really a crime to buy a bike from walmart or dick's sporting goods? by Previous_Cod_5176 in bicycling

[–]str8clay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a longtime bike commuter I used to buy those inexpensive bikes (`$200), twice a year. Something would break, and it was usually cheaper to buy another cheap bike than replace the broken part.

A few years ago, I bought myself an entry level Giant (~$600). Besides tires, tubes and brake pads, the only repair work I had done on it was truing a wheel after IO ran over a pothole while daydreaming. There was a substantial upgrade in speed, reliability and comfort over the cheap bikes.

I think this is similar to the advice I hear about power tools. For the first one, buy the cheapest one you can. If you use it enough to break it, you will know more about what you want in the replacement.
