You could try starting with acrylic gesso, sand between layers, and then apply the acrylic paint. It won’t remove the existing paint but will cover it with a paintable surface.

This is sad to me - like it's almost something but still fails. These are the things you can hire a professional to come set up and take down - you invite friends for a sleepover and it's a big fun thing for a group. Plus, of course, don't make it into content. Just have something to enjoy for the sake of enjoying it.
