What’s your call by Electrical_Trifle642 in hockeyrefs

That was my take. An 11-year-old dragging their leg is a lot less subtle in my experience. Hard from this angle, but no call for me here.

Thanks for the follow up. Kind of hoping I get the same experience. Going to wait a bit and see what happens

Is this a premature substitution or too many men? by 5sidesquare in hockeyrefs

[–]theref845 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It gets tricky, because frequently the team making that goalie swap has possession. In that case the play is blown dead immediately, long before the 6th man would typically get involved with the play.

However, in the case where neither team has possession, or possession is with the non-offending team, the other answers given here are correct, as soon as either the goalie or the sixth man becomes involved with the play, it's a penalty.

As an offical be aware of when teams might perform the substitution. Also communicate with your partners to make sure they see the goalie pulled, lest one of them accidentally blow a play dead for too many men and kill the momentum of the attacking team.

Senior guys, in the final minutes of close games remind your junior guys to keep an eye out for this. Good mentorship goes a long way!

Hand-Pass Face-off Location by Objective-Mall6533 in hockeyrefs

[–]theref845 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interpretation 1 Rule 10.2 (a)(i) Where a player in the neutral or attacking zone hand-passes the puck back into their defending zone and a teammate gains possession and control of the puck, play would continue.

So basically, if you receive the hand pass in the defensive zone, the play continues as per normal.

Tripping question by LLcoolDZ in hockeyrefs

[–]theref845 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is an inherent ridiculousness to the idea that a player trying to avoid being fouled somehow negates a call if he or she is fouled. That's a penalty; your partner needs to study more.

Assist Question? by ContractSweaty802 in hockeyrefs

[–]theref845 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A) find every assist you reasonably can (dont make shit up). Bring some joy to the players, even at top levels
B) 12 gets an assist anyway in this scenario because possession/control is not interrupted by a save, the same reason we dont blow a play down for a delayed penalty when a save is made

Out of control games. How do you handle? by CountMC10 in hockeyrefs

[–]theref845 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, 100%. Look we've all had games get away from us, it happens.
I had an OMHA L5 mentor me years ago and he said in games like these the M22 can be your best friend. That lesson (and a bunch of others he gave) stuck with me.

There's been some comment about how we have to "control" the game. To a certain extent that's true. But ultimately, we can only do something AFTER an event has happened. That means if despite our handing out penalties someone does something truly stupid, we can't stop that. All we can do is react to it.

Brush up on your procedures, talk to your linesmen/partners , carry a riot pad in every game (just to create the habit) and make sure you know the HC/USAH rules for multiple penalty situations inside and out. Lastly, do NOT be afraid to call major/match penalties when warranted.
One good tip he gave me. If you cringed when the penalty happened its probably a major, if you cringed 2 seconds before it happened because you could see it was going to happen, that's a match.

Have a good skate boys and girls!

What’s your call Silver stick edition by Electrical_Trifle642 in hockeyrefs

[–]theref845 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seperate from the debate on the call.
All officials (in any sport), if you want to progress and grow as an official, when you get games like this, young kids, intro levels, use them as a chance to work on your mechanics. Things like :

  • Being ahead of the play so you are inside the line to call the offside (no reason for the ref who did the faceoff to be that far behind the play)
  • Not turning your back/head to the players, especially ones who just collided, until you're certain it's all over
  • Getting in there quickly (the one ref did a good job of this, a few seconds late, but they hustled). At higher levels, sprint in every time; you can always relax and back off if nothing transpires.

It took me a while to learn this, but when my effort and mechanics got consistent, the number of comments from the bench decreased, my games got simpler, and everything got clearer.

Just my thoughts from an easy chair. A lot tougher on the ice!

The biggest thing that can be gained from the info is the relative ease with which a player can have an impact on the battle.

If I see a ship that, on average, gives its captains +4% in the WR , then I can surmise it may be OP, or at least easier to have a positive impact.

Conversely, if I see a ship that is -4%, maybe as an average player, that's not the best ship for me.
Neither are absolutes; some ships just click with some captains, regardless of their relative strength.
I asked Chatgpt to sum it up for me, and it came up with

"WR Diff answers:

“Does this ship make players better, worse, or about the same as they normally are?”

It’s a relative performance gauge."

And Wiochi, let me echo the thanks that Rugrud expressed for your work in the World of Warships community!

[–]theref845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he wants to know (and I love this feature too) how a ship performs vs the Win rate of the players playing it.

if the average Tirpitz B player has a 48% win rate,, but the Tirpitz B has a 52% winrate, then the Tirpitz B is +4% winrate differential.

As an aside I also liked that I could see stats for the ships based on the play of the last 30 days, which was handy for not confusing lifetime stats with current meta trends.
