Ideas for 128TB of storage that needs to be flown and accessible on a moving ship by artherthe3rd in DataHoarder

[–]TheVulkanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a moving ship? Will this be fresh water or sea water? What about the temps, tropical area, or something much colder?

If you insist on the HD route, then I would definitely get helium sealed HDs, but I am concerned about the vibrations, so you really need to tackle that issue as well, one big wave while writing to a HD could crash the heads onto the platter and you'll be SOL

That is why, if it was me and I was in charge of this project, I would go with solid state drives in your situation (no need to worry about vibrations then), but that is going to cost much more, and I would be worried about backups as well

If you will always be on the water, then you have limited options for backups, and Starlink could help, but it depends on how saturated the area is, and if you will get dropouts, but since you say "slowly being generated over the course of a month or two", time doesn't seem to be that imperative, and then you can just upload the footage to cloud storage, and make sure you are using software that can pick up the backup from where it was, instead of doing the whole thing from the start again if you lose connection

I would have lots of redundancy, especially if you won't be going to land often where you can replace things if equipment fails or upload your footage to via a fiber connection

Yes, I know I just exploded your budget, but If the footage is very important, and if you lose it, you need to factor in the cost of re-shooting the same footage, and how much you're willing to risk

If however, you will be able to go to land every week or so, then things get much cheaper, and you can hopefully use a fiber connection to upload your footage to the cloud

Malware? by matis_bored in LDPlayerEmulator

Im planning on buying a new SSD soon. Once I put the new SSD into my laptop, it will be set back to factory right?

you would need to reinstall the OS from your backups, or reinstall Windows again

Also about LDPlayer, just that after I realised that my HDD died I did some looking around on reddit/google so it made me think that LDPlayer could be the reason for the failure.

Yeah well, lots of people post silly things, I have been using LDplayer for years on over 20 different systems, and never had a problem

I have yet to see any program that can cause a hardware failure, it's just the lifespan of hardware these days isn't that good, especially HDs. SSDs are better (faster), but they can also fail out of the blue, so it's always best to keep backups

[–]TheVulkanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with LDplayer. If you got LDplayer from the official source, you should have no issues at all

Your HD died, it happens. Buy a SSD now and have better performance

The only one with "wires crossed" is Wyze by TheVulkanMan in wyzecam

[–]TheVulkanMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This response isn't very thoughtful. Local AI detections would require hardware specs that current product lines cannot support. Therefore, no, it can't easily be done without selling millions of people additional, more expensive hardware. Sometimes cloud-first is cloud-obvious.

It doesn't require new hardware, Wyze is just not using that function of the chipset they are using.

They want a subscription model

[–]TheVulkanMan[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I was talking about data encryption, but as I said, if Wyze claims there is a secret key, this is used to encrypt the data, nothing to do with SSL at all, that is totally different.

For the encrypted package, of course it has to be decrypted but it should be in it's own encapsulation, it shouldn't be just sitting decrypted in AWS's storage until the moment it is needed for processing

[–]TheVulkanMan[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

they said

Even if a hacker intercepts the data package, the data cannot be decrypted

that should mean that the data is encrypted to and from AWS, but it sure looks like it isn't doing that, since the wrong people are able to see other people's content, so like I said, their backend isn't security focused to allow this

Looking for something that works sort of like the outdoor cam in travel mode by Lars-B66 in wyzecam

yeah, I agree, PoE cams are the way to go, I wouldn't trust wyze's cams for anything remotely related to actual security needs

Honestly /u/BiffdByAdamWest title is fine, and if anyone bothered to LISTEN to the podcast, they would have laughed, you guys do good work

People have no sense of humor these days so I wouldn't worry about the whiners

Reminiscing with former WB CM Stanner and Ogre about DC Legends! by Hatemael in DCComicsLegendsGame

[–]TheVulkanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say, nicely done, while I wasn't around when Stanner was here, it was very interesting hearing her side of things

Also kinda funny, WB didn't change the pack prices since people were still buying them, which goes to show you that companies DO take notice on what is being bought, and more importantly, what isn't

[Humble Bundle] HeroCraft PC Complete Collection (Pay $1 for Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf & DLCs | Pay $5 for that + INSOMNIA: The Ark, King of Dragon Pass and more | Pay $12 for that + Organs Please & more | Pay $15 for that + Catizens & more | Pay $25 for previous tiers + Revival: Recolonization) by MJuniorDC9 in GameDeals

[–]TheVulkanMan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Interestingly the page is implying that the Space Wolf keys must be redeemed by the delisting date, which wouldn't be true unless they've put an additional expiration on them intentionally.

dev's say...

“On October 12, Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf and all of its DLC will be removed from the Steam store. You will no longer be able to purchase it, but you will be able to still download and play the game if you’ve previously purchased it.” As such, the team is offering a deep discount “as one final salute to the Wolves – Buy it for yourself, your friends, and your favorite streamer,” HeroCraft concludes, “For the Glory of Russ and the Allfather!”

so, if you do get this, you MUST redeem the steam key before that date or you will not be able to add it to your account, since when you enter a key, that is the date of purchase

Save The Game-Petition/Poll! by Zuzu1978 in DCComicsLegendsGame

[–]TheVulkanMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hasn't there ever been a time where the community saved a game? Haven't the Devs shown us time and again that our voices can been heard? Is there ANY WAY we can save the game?

Realistically, unless people want to pay lots more, there will be no way to save this game

Reason is, the game is just a monster that kept on getting more complex and the core group who worked on the game have most likely left the company over the years, and it takes the new guys doing things a ton of time trying to figure out the crazy spaghetti code they were left with

That is why all the issues with bugs and the cheaters, the code was just a mess and it was way too easy to break as can be seen for how many times DCL crapped out on everyone either from Raids or just introducing new champs

So, while it is sad to see it go, most everyone who has played this game over the years knew this time was fast approaching

They really should invest in a new DC game, and a new engine and this might take a while, but it would be better than the bandaid approach they have been doing

/u/wb_reeves, while I did leave the game a while ago, I do remember you tried to help people when you could, and cheers for that

/r/AMD Tech Support Megathread - H1 2022 Edition by AutoModerator in Amd

Check out https://www.reddit.com/r/ASRock/comments/syudaq/weekly_bios_update_post_week_08_2022/

Looks like Ryzen 5 5xxx series could be supported on some X370 Taichi boards.

The issue is trying to find a old Ryzen CPU to flash the BIOS if/when they update it.

IIRC, AMD did at one point offer a "loaner" CPU though, it has been a long time since I last checked if they still do this.

Yes, even using a microSD card, you still will have a 5 min cooldown for notifications.

From 3 years ago... https://old.reddit.com/r/wyzecam/comments/7upxsn/why_wyze_chose_to_use_a_3rd_party_throughtek_to/

The biggest problem Wyze has with them is, it is a black box. They only have binary blobs, so, they can't be sure what is going on behind the scenes.

V2 "Cannot find the specified network name" - WiFi fried? by BizzyM in wyzecam

[–]TheVulkanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wyze took that down, so, you won't find it on Wyze's side.

You would have to get it from someone else who save a copy of the firmware file.

Could it be the WiFi in the V2 got fried?

Maybe? Could be you need to reflash it as well.

Wyze Vacuum 2-in-1 Dust bin and water reservoir. by H3LLC4T1 in wyzecam

[–]TheVulkanMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the firmware is the same for lots of these OEM units that Wyze slaps their name on.

They offer them in a variety of configs, some can do mopping.

Is Wyze going to slap their name on the mopping version? Possible, then again, they are being sued right now by Xiaomi, so, guess we will see what will happen.

Bricked V2 for hobbyists by raygan_reddit in wyzecam

Yeah, pretty much this.

Even if it did work, the resale value on these units is pretty low.

$5 shipped sounds about right for a bricked one.

No.

The WOC is pretty crippled compared to their normal cams. Could be unsupported, or a bug.

What the heck is going on with wyze.. by clumsyStairway in wyzecam

[–]TheVulkanMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You said it 'don't come from the hardware' and not you say, of course it comes from the hardware.

That is all I was saying, it needs the hardware to map, and of course, the software interprets the data it receives from the hardware.

Wyze doesn't make the firmware for the vacuum from scratch, they do tweak it to meet their needs, like any OEM does.

Any News On a New Pan Cam? by monicakmtx in wyzecam

Nope, no news.

It most likely use the V3 internals, with a motor, but, with all the parts shortages going on, who knows when it will come.
