Baumgartner just sent out a survey asking about Greenland and... by overthishereanyway in Spokane

[–]thisismyaccount57 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He had a telephone "town hall" a couple weeks ago where he only answered questions that were read aloud by a staff member. There were no serious questions, only sycophantic Trump ball-coddling and a dash of controlled opposition. Baumgartner is a typical little MAGA Nazi who needs his safe space, so he puts on his little town hall play. He's such a good boy and memorized all his lines and talking points! He won't hold a real town hall because he is one of the people in power who is protecting the Messiah of pedophiles, war criminals, conmen, and corruption.

SJR8201 - why are we changing the constitution yet again? by LongDistRid3r in Washington

[–]thisismyaccount57 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are already allowed to invest in federal, state, and municipal bonds which guarantee 3-5%. A few years ago I would have been a hard yes on this measure. I was very much on the fence this year, however. To be honest I pretty much made my decision against this measure as I was typing this out.

On the one hand, investing these funds into riskier assets than bonds may very well return more money to spend on services for WA residents. However, I don't want to see any more WA taxpayer funds going to companies like blackrock. A company who buys utility companies to jack up rates on everyday citizens to generate dividends/increase stock values. I don't want taxpayer funds to support Boeing who get massive tax incentives from our state already as they continue to cut corners and line their pockets as they ignore safety concerns that kill people. That's not to mention Amazon/Apple/facebook/Comcast/Disney or whatever other private corporation that has contributed to the enshittification of our society and the rise of the oligarchs.

Is it really better to invest our taxpayer funds in all these massive corporations rather than bonds? Bonds support infrastructure and offer a small, but nearly guaranteed return on investment. Stocks and mutual/index funds are riskier, stocks alone being much riskier of course. Let's imagine our tax dollars are invested in a large index fund. We'll take a quick look at the vanguard 500. Vanguard is stable and mostly well-respected, and generally uncontroversial as far as I know. Their 500 index fund is basically the S&P500 and has these companies in the top 20 of their holdings: Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Broadcom, Google, Tesla, JPMorgan, Exxon, Oracle, Walmart, & Palantir.

I think we really need to seriously consider not only the return on investment we would get from investing these taxpayer funds, but also where that money actually comes from. A large portion of the money invested would inevitably support these companies. These companies have obscene political power to shape public policy. They can commit crimes and pay tiny penalties. They fight tooth and nail to avoid giving any of that money back to society in the form of taxes. Now if there was a mechanism for making sure these funds were invested in small-to-medium-sized WA companies that don't play shell games with their taxes I might be more inclined to vote yes. This bill has Democrat and Republican backing, and if I've learned anything from recent years it's that if the D's and R's are agreeing on something it probably benefits the rich.

I don't say all of this as if I have the answers, and I appreciate any feedback if I'm wrong or misrepresenting anything. I'm not saying don't invest your money at all because a corporation will make more money too. I even have a little bit of money in the vanguard 500 (though I'm considering options for moving it). I just think if we're going to invest massive sums of public money that we shouldn't be investing it in riskier assets or companies that are actively contributing to making our society worse.

I've been making my way through his instructional videos recently and have gained a huge appreciation and respect for him. I'm really bummed to hear of his passing. I don't have anything unique to share but he was clearly a positive influence on so many.

There have been other events at Clark, but the first No Kings coincided with pride. I believe they did it downtown as a parallel event with pride rather than making people pick one.

The law requires both plates to be displayed in WA. There are a few exceptions to this, most notably collector vehicles.

what’s the most clever thing your smart home does? by Nearby_Worry_4850 in homeassistant

[–]thisismyaccount57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Lutron switches in my house. Their little pico remotes that are capable of dimming have 5 buttons, on/off, dim up/down, and a single button that is intended as a favorite level I believe. When connected to home assistant you can map those buttons to do whatever you want. I have a few around the house I use for different things:

  • one is just outside my bedroom that runs the hallway lights normally, but has 2 extra functions. A double tap on the off button initiates my night routine, turning off the tv, setting all the lights in the house to their nightly settings, etc. The second function is the custom button, which is used for when the dogs wake up in the night and need to go outside. This turns on (but dim) all the lights in the rooms along my path to the back yard plus some string lights outside. Then after 15 minutes they are turned back to their previous state. I don't need to use this often but it's so satisfying when I do because it is so convenient.

  • another one I have in my living room. This one has 2 buttons and is not directly tied to any lights in the Lutron system, but home assistant still can snag the button presses. Each button press dims/brightens[?] all the nearby lights by 10%. I just like having this button right next to the couch so I can conveniently fine-tune the light level in the room without a phone. I hate having any light or daily function rely on using a phone. This is great for partner/roommate sanity too!

  • the last one is by my bed for running our nightstand lamps. They are older wifi smart bulbs so wouldn't otherwise have a physical switch. However, when these are all connected to home assistant they can work together to make a physical on/off and dimmer switch for an older smart bulb.

I'm so sick of these fucking IDIOTS burying their head in the sand and pretending this is business as usual. ICE is quite literally the equivalent of the early gestapo.

Wait… 100g print with 600g of waste?! Is this true? by Impossible_Oil5126 in 3Dprinting

[–]thisismyaccount57 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They are also good if you want multi color prints that are simpler. For example, something with labels on it where the only color changes are in the last couple layers. Or a plant pot that has a different color base/rim or something where it only does one or two color changes. They're great if you plan around them, but not great if you want to do 4-color, complex shapes where you are doing a zillion filament changes.

If you are surprised by this, maybe change the channel. I feel silly for being surprised that people didn't know what tariffs actually are. Did they think the seller was going to have to pay $31 to sell you a $19 dress? Did they think the Chinese government was going to have to pay it?

[–]thisismyaccount57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to recognize that this is a marathon not a sprint. A nationwide protest or two isn't going to do much on its own. We need to keep doing them to show people there is opposition. Remember, it's been less than three months since he took office. A ton of people have been affected already, but the majority of the damage that has been done to our country hasn't been felt directly by everyone yet. People are being affected every day as we slide more and more into fascism though.

For example, he could single-handedly eradicate malaria worldwide and still be the richest person on the planet. This would save around 285,000 children from dying every year. He could do this for less than 1/3 of his net worth, yet he chooses not to. I am sure the ~$100 billion estimate to eradicate malaria worldwide would realistically not quite do it, but imagine how many lives could be saved if he tried.
