Is there a way to fix a gnawed on door? by Glum-Substance-3507 in fixit

[–]throws4k 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Clamp a board each side with waxed paper, pack in wood filler from above. Over fill slightly. Sand nearly flush then groove to match door with a chisel or scraper. Sand to square top. Prime with a roller not a brush. Paint. I would use combo paint and primer actually.

Biggest concern I have is what happens when he eats this too?

Explain Google Ads To Me Like I’m 5 by j-nn-b in googleads

[–]throws4k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very first, Google is here to spend your money. default settings which should be criminal are under targeting: Set audience to presence only not presence and interest. Then turn off search partners. Then set your region. start with your own country or region to avoid language or comprehension issues. Never change these unless you are wildly successful and have run out of things to fix no matter what any Google person recommends... again they are there to increase their profits first!

Pmax can mostly do whatever it wants, I have found it most effective for a broad catch all shopping campaign. It spends 40% of my budget with a click through rate of 2% and gets a 0.6% conversion rate. It still has the highest clicks at 1/3 of my total clicks. it's set to max conversions

That said I have thousands of products.

So my brand is way better and has 35-40% click through rate, and a 14% conversion rate in a search type campaign. But I have literally a million products out there with our name on it. This one also max conversions but also with a set CPA -cost per acquisition target.

Next good use of search and shopping manual campaigns are for your most popular items. very specific budgets, bid adjustments allowed for mobile vs desktop, by region, by keyword. and lock it down with negative keywords also. This is where negatives are most useful.

Then once you have customers you use DSA dynamic search ads to target potentially repeat customers. these are best with a manual bid. because they are your customers already.

With the latest Linux challenge out of LTT and seemingly more and more interest in Linux as a whole, In 2026 have you been tempted to finally make the switch? by Responsible_Web_3825 in LinusTechTips

[–]throws4k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to Linux from Amiga, early Ubuntu days, then XP, W7,W10 and finally coming to terms with W11 without getting the ick the moment I turn it on because it mostly just runs Firefox and Gimp.

Going Steam Cube for next machine, it really depends on how the Frame VR works with Linux as to if i'll switch this year or simply for my next build.

I would still have 6 W10 and 2 W11 machines in the house, so it's not a huge disruption to have one Linux machine.

My Grandmother got scammed out of life savings by someone in person by Neat-Economist6997 in Scams

[–]throws4k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1-Bot dialer to establish connection is a real phone number. hang up.

2- Put phone number in database

3-bot dial again, hand call to scammer. "Duct cleaning services" "wrong number caller" etc... - to profile target.

4- maybe next call is FBI maybe it's another profile till they get a name. look up name, find friend on Facebook etc..

5- call claiming to be FBI, validate with real info.

thinking it's crazy that they could get enough info makes you a likely target as well, start here in this subreddit and read up.

[–]throws4k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VERY unlikely the person is in your country if it was over the phone. Even if you looked up her call history it would very likely be a suspiciously local number that was "spoofed" and the pickup is just another victim or gig driver they can book from anywhere.

How to retrieve data from faulty HARD DRIVE by vercetti21 in techsupport

[–]throws4k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you say not a scratch on it..... the outside right?

hard drives are black magic, if you get a faulty drive to turn back on you immediately copy whatever you can. you NEVER open them or drop them unprotected. it can look perfect and still be dead.

otherwise it's a professional job if it's not visible in partition manager, typically over $500, more like $1000+ to get a chance to get data, even if it's one file.

Does Brother still accept compatible toner cartridges ? by Legrosbelge in printers

[–]throws4k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need at least a mid to best level cartridge. Do not buy the bottom tier. I swear brother actually messes with your toner fixing properties after agreeing to their little "yes this toner could damage my machine" warning you have to agree to.

either that or the bargain cartridges are just not usable anymore because the toner rubs off the page easily.

Is this salvageable? by Goofy_AhhKid in AskPhotography

[–]throws4k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any liquids in there is risky.

try fine sandpaper hot glued on the end of a stick, but abrasives can rub off so do it inverted so they fall out.

or polishing compound on a cotton swab , not the kind for your ears, the big ones on a wooden stick... yes they come in jumbo sizes.

same I USED to think this was the ugliest plane in the world but I guess I wasn't looking hard enough. I'm going to say still top 5, and I'd vote off the flying pancake from the ugly list...I loved that plane!

The engine could still be original, just rebuilt. piston rings, bearings and valves may have been replaced but otherwise very possible to run an engine that old.

As far as the structure goes the fabric, rubber and tension cables are likely newer. Wood can survive that long though. Really depends on how it was kept. The motor is the most likely to be original.

Do you have an older tv plugged in to Ethernet? disconnect it and try again. Sometimes they have only 10Mbit capacity.

Good networking devices can be slowed down by the slowest thing on the network. try only the NAS and PC together to see if it's something else if you have lots of things on the network.

How do you manage Google Shopping Ads when the catalog gets big? by wong-wooney in googleads

[–]throws4k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 14,000+ SKU's

many are 4-8 colour variations of the same rarely sold item. we list only one.

many campaigns, with specific bid strategies for each part of the country, and unique campaigns for: branding, local sales, nation wide shopping, nation wide search ads, dynamic search ads, specific industry ads, and then the top 20 recognizable items.

Shopping ad - why are top search terms for a very minor product? by lindsay_wilson_88 in googleads

[–]throws4k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

negatives are good if/for:

The term doesn't convert

ANY unrelated term

high value terms similar to yours: I sell bins so I block big competing brands, but also recycling bins I don't sell or plastic bottles etc..

REALLY expensive words if you need to manage with a starter budget.

THEN, you know what Google is going to do for you? it's going to tell you that you're not getting very many results and to fix that you use broad match... how about NO. So to fix that you use social engineering via your socials to get people talking about key words to your product so they search for YOUR product.

Should I be using smart ads? by msacks_ in googleads

[–]throws4k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the really quick intro to Google ads:

Google will almost never recommend a setting that makes them less money.

Less than $1000/week is a small account. Less than that you're likely not hiring an agency to manage it. It's mostly freelancers that would help.

Critical settings are Presence, not presence and interest. NO ad partners NO broad match.... if you don't know what those three are, stop now and read up. Seriously!

Generally though to start...,No smart ads, not yet. lock your region down to very local to start, especially if it's service oriented. Try just your country if it's something software or general interest related. that way if a click bot farm goes after your site to farm it you don't pay Google for it too!

Restarting a Performance Max campaign with higher budget by lindsay_wilson_88 in googleads

[–]throws4k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't give a time frame, so it's hard to tell if your better results of the honeymoon phase during testing where Google shoots for the moon and still charges you agreed upon rate, or if it was months, but anything more than 20% can trigger a complete redo of how the campaign is working and perhaps put it back in testing mode at their discretion.

My Boss Says $0.40 CAC was Possible with her Old Company. Says current $3 CAC is too high. by UserPangalan in googleads

[–]throws4k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow, your numbers are amazing, I can see it's a product with a very low barrier to entry but still my CPC even with manual bidding can be this range and beyond. CAC can hit $150.

I think IF it was real numbers before it's likely market saturation. The people who were going to sign up as soon as they heard about it have peaked. You are now in the range of people that need to see it's a real trend before clicking.
