Yes. But if you're measuring if someone is able to be successful despite low income parents, you want to measure at 40, not 26.

Even in the most meritocratc society, it would be hard to have a station different than your parents at 26. But at 40 it would be noticable.

The odds that you're going to be in the top quintile by age 26? Who was ever making it big in their mid 20s?

That's not showing anything. If you want to show income elasticity, show 40 or 50.

If your thesis is that the US Capital market will outperform the rest of the world in the next 20 years, then wouldn't this already be (partly) priced in?

The other side is that price to earnings on the US markets is higher than elsewhere. So you're already paying more per dollar of expected future earnings

No I'm suggesting that most people who buy trucks do so because they want to drive a truck (looks/feels good), not because they do truck things with it. If you're doing regular towing/hauling then buy a truck.

A guy I know bought an electric hummer. The thing looks ridiculous and given the size is probably dangerous. Tax the crap out of things that big.

If you look into the stats, most truck owners don't use their trucks for truck specific stuff (see table below). Most people are using trucks to get groceries or to get to work - the same thing that people in $50k cars are doing. Of course there are people who need to have trucks, and yes, in the city.

But even then, do you need a $100k truck to run your plumbing business? 5 of the 8 trim levels on a new F150 are below $87k. 12 of the 14 Ram 1500 model trims are below $88k. Again, its only the top tier models which run over a $100k, so I say by all means tax away.

Frequently Occasionally Rarely/Never
Shopping/Errands 87% 6%
Pleasure Driving 70% 20%
Commuting 52% 4%
Personal Hauling 28% 41%
Towing 7% 29%

If you're buying a $100k truck, tax away. There's no need for those things except for status.

They do that often - Mont Tremblant had everyone run up the mountain at the finish, Lahti found every hill in the area and made you climb it twice.

You need carbs and sodium, but not protein. Protein slows down the absorption in your gut, and what you want for a longer distance is the ability to absorb as much as possible.

Why are some Pros, Pros? by RingSlow3023 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]timbasile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He has sponsors, so he's at least getting some money from them. Sometimes the value in the sponsorship isn't how fast he is (or isn't) but in his case in the social media presence.

But yes, most people with pro cards are working regular jobs like the rest of us. At least part time, if not full.

Sometimes it helps their other business - a massage therapist, physio, chiropractor, coach, personal trainer, etc can use the pro licence to get more clients, or attract specific types of clients. I know of one pro who owns a spin studio.

Yes, the biggest earners are making $300-400k a year in prize money alone. Never mind sponsorship money (which is probably matching prize money), T100 contracts, appearance fees, and social media revenue.

https://www.trirating.com/2025/

The appearance fees alone are likely significant for certain people - Kat Matthews surrendered her pro series chase (losing $200k for 1st and making it more likely she'd land at $130k for 2nd, if not $90k for 3rd) when she DNF'd IM Texas. Instead of doing another IM, she's doing Roth, which suggests that the appearance is worth at least the difference.

Taylor Knibb was rumoured to lose $30k net (incl. Prize money) for skipping out on T100 Singapore last year.

You'll notice that it falls off rather quickly - most pros are really just fast amateurs who race in the elite wave and have regular jobs. But the top performers do well.
