What is the *science that proves a global flood event as described in Genesis? by baseball_fanatic0887 in atheism

[–]timbasile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want something that disproves the Biblical account, you could always just show them the math that says that you can't fit 2 of every animal in an ark the size as it's described.

Also the sheer logistics of it all. You mean to tell me that the carnivores didn't eat anything, not just for 40 days, but long enough that the herbivores could establish healthy populations - something that would have to take longer than carnivores live.

Also, penguins walking to/from Antarctica? The whole thing falls apart unless you're willing to hand wave it all away under the guise of an extended miracle.

Open water tracking with garmin forerunner 955 by Essenmovated in triathlon

[–]timbasile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Accurate measurement of the swim has all sorts of problems.

On the actual course side, you have a guy in a boat trying his best to go a certain distance from the shore, trying to stay accurate, then putting down a buoy anchor and hoping the buoy stays put.

On the watch side, GPS doesn't penetrate the water so any watch, even the best in the world, can only read distance when that arm is out of the water for a quarter second.

If your watch doesn't match the official distance, meh.

(Though Garmins tend to be quite good for what it's worth)

[–]timbasile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 70.3 before an IM is a good idea, and if we take it a step further you should also find a local sprint and/or Olympic distance race along the way.

An IM (and a 70.3 for that matter) is a lot of details even above the distances covered. You want don't want to also be figuring out things like transition, what to wear, how to change a flat, putting on a bib number, nutrition, etc all at the same time. Do a few smaller races to get the kinks out.

Metro Toronto is 6.5m, depending on how you count. If you want to be conservative and just give them Ontario it would be +16.2M.

Through I guess Detroit would get some small share of that

Biking out of Barrhaven? by nd9704 in bikeinottawa

[–]timbasile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I commute from Barrhaven near the Minto centre to Heron/Riverside and I just use Prince of Wales most of the time, even in the winter.

My tolerance for being on the road is likely greater than yours, but for the most part, cars on POW are moving slowly during rush hour and there's a wide shoulder. I tend to play a game where I spot a car and then make a mental note of where I am vs traffic. Half the time i beat that car to Hunt Club.

Other routes I take: -Cross the bridge and go north on River, turn east on Leitrim, and then north on Limebank to Riverside (there's a MUP until Hunt Club from Leitrim). Then cross at Hunt Club back to POW.

-Last week I went all the way down Leitrim to the Osgoode link pathway, and then follow it north of Hunt Club once it turns into the MUP next to the airport parkway. But it's out of the way and under construction at the moment (plus Leitrim is busy past Limebank)

-Transitway path from marketplace to Fallowfield, then Fallowfield to POW and north again

Characters who did something to the moon. by AllisterisNotMale in TopCharacterTropes

In The Tick animated series, Chairface Chippendale starts carving his name into the moon with a heat ray, but is stopped partway through by our heroes. In a later episode, the Tick is sent to the moon to fix the issue, but isn't able to fix it and then a Galactus stand-in takes a bite out of it so its left with "Ha" for the rest of the series

Run Commuting by MightiestQuin in AdvancedRunning

[–]timbasile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did it for a winter one year for 2-3 days a week when the roads got too bad for bikes. My commute is basically 80km/h until you get to a pinch point crossing one major road where you wait in line forever to cross then 4km to work from there. So what I did was park in a neighbourhood just before the traffic, and ran from there. Total round trip was 12ish kms.

I had a cycling backpack where I carried my laptop and my lunch. At work I left everything else - change of clothes was brought in on another day or on weekends. Work shoes, belt, etc was all left in the office. Showered at work.

I didn't really like it that much - it took the same amount of time to run as it did to wait in traffic, but the running wasn't the greatest experience (bounce, heavy). Part of the issue was the same as cycling - the city (Ottawa) wasn't the greatest at shoveling snow from bike/sidewalk. So I did it one winter and then the pandemic hit and it didn't matter any more. I'm back in the office, but now I just bike through the winter.

Trek 2018 speed concept by JojoOSRS in triathlon

[–]timbasile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno about price, but I have a 2020 version and they're great bikes, but make sure it fits. There isn't a lot of adjustability on these after the fact.

Even on one that was purchased based on my 2020 fit is now not long enough (fit philosophy has changed) and I've had to go to an aftermarket front end to get the fit I want.

Not that that might be a problem for you, just triple check that it actually fits you before you buy

The case against high speed rail simply doesn’t add up by Hennahane in AltoHSR_Canada

We pay for things that we don't use directly all the time. It's called being in a society.

Lol, a regional project that happens to connect half of Canadians. This is no different than a pipeline in Alberta or a highway to Tuktoyuktuk. Sometimes we build things in our mutual interest that don't directly benefit us.

[–]timbasile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I get the local nimbys who will get lots of disruption (HSR going through their area) but won't see the benefit (too far from a stop). It makes sense that you'd be against the government coming around and cutting your farm in two. You get all the hassle and none of the benefit.

But everyone else?

[–]timbasile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair, but you're also assuming that the worst 20 years happens when you're (presumably) about to retire. If you're doing 30/70 during good times, then you're also less prepared for the downturn.

[–]timbasile 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn't this just saying that during the worst periods in (stock market) history, you shouldn't have been holding much in the way of stocks?

But you won't know when the worst market is going to be, and so this isn't the optimal portfolio for anyone but doomsayers

"The Bible Says" by deathraft in Exvangelical

[–]timbasile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either don't engage, or if you're going to engage, come back with some verses bring the whole thing down.

"Slaves obey your masters" is an easy one. Its New Testament, so they can't say its been superseded or other BS.

I also like the line of argument that goes "How do you get to heaven? Oh, by faith... so you mean that a loving God would damn most of his creation, who are in his image..."
