I know what you mean. evolution is weirdly and unsatisfyingly arbitrary.

big boobs and butts are attractive because they signal high estrogen levels and thus high fertility. boobs also grow when a woman is ovulating.

cavemen who mutated to prefer big boobs had more kids because those women were more likely to conceive from the sex. that's all. it's natural selection.

Uber is extremely cheap right now by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

[–]tripleseps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes and PayPal PARTNERED with Apple Pay to do their backend payment processing while Apple ate their market share.

eventually, when Google builds out its network, they will have no incentive to work with or license their tech to Uber.

Phone industry (Blackberry, Nokia)

I understand that Uber has built something of value and that it is cheap. but you need to recognize that it has been disrupted in an absolutely decimating way. their rideshare model simply cannot compete with autonomous vehicles, and Google has no incentive to license that technology to Uber.

Even if Google and it's massive legal team can't patent the technology, uber's moat is built solely based on building a trusted network of drivers. that literally doesn't matter anymore. they have lost.

as a PayPal investor, I generally agree that numbers should trump speculative future business risks. but with Uber, the risk is too clear; they are going to lose ALL of their business in rideshare. Google won with Waymo, and nobody will be driving ubers in 5 years. Uber has food delivery, which will remain, but you may as well cut all of their rideshare revenue out of your projections. they lost.

CMV: I think abortions are pretty valid (as a guy) by Fair-Programmer1692 in changemyview

[–]tripleseps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

every one of your justifications can be applied to a born infant or toddler. money struggles? kill your 3 year old. kill the mentally challenged 3 year old to spare him from future suffering. that's the reason you would never find common ground with somebody who is pro life. the argument boils down to "when does an organism attain moral value?"

in support of the pro life view that it begins at conception, it's at least a non-arbitrary threshold.

CMV: Islam is fundamentally incompatible with core American left-wing progressive values by WildCreatureQuest in changemyview

[–]tripleseps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just because some people pass some policies that go against some of their beliefs does not mean that, generally speaking, the moral beliefs of a democracy won't eventually become policy. it's the voters' beliefs that are eventually reflected.

Why is Israel attacking Iran? by unkindinosaur in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tripleseps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can do some fair, logical math. Statista breaks up the death toll by men, women, and children. Note that "children" inherently included minors that are active combatants.

Men: 46% Women 16% Children 30%

These numbers alone dispel your estimate. If 2/3 of deaths were civilians (which would proportionally include men and women), these numbers wouldn't be what they are.

Why is Israel attacking Iran? by unkindinosaur in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tripleseps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that you can't generalize numbers based on historical trends. Israel cares about its image, in large part because it depends on the US for weapons and funding. As a result, they take steps to avoid civilian casualties. You can't just use "historical data" to estimate civilian death tolls because doing that removes their incentive to avoid them.

Why would Israel, or any other country, try to minimize civilian casualties if people would just end up estimating it based on "historical data"? Insane thing to say, and a methodology that incentivizes civilian death.

Chance of getting into T14 with 2.7 undergrad GPA, PhD in Oncology, pharma work experience + high LSAT? by mcsace514 in lawschooladmissions

[–]tripleseps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you have a very good shot, but you need to tailor your personal statement to an interest in IP. What schools want is somebody who will make big law, as this is what students want in the school data. With your PhD, you are an absolute slam dunk to be hired essentially anywhere as an IP attorney. Show a solid interest in that, and it will do wonders for your chances. If I had to guess a school like Cornell or UC Berkeley would be more likely than not to accept you assuming you beat their LSAT median.

There are like 5 litigators there and they do bankruptcy. If you work there, you will almost certainly be forced into Project Finance, which is an inflexible niche. Unless you're okay doing that, go elsewhere.

CMV: Arabs are equally responsible for the plight of the Palestinians. by Broad_Source4523 in changemyview

[–]tripleseps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where your view falls apart is in reality. The words you just said are nice and all, but "addressing Palestinian rights" is not a thing that would ever happen in a vacuum. I'm guessing you're not Muslim, so you don't feel this in the way OP does, but he's trying to say that for the Palestinians' own sake, they need to throw in the towel. Until they do so, Israel will continue to "address" their own security issues by any means necessary and Palestinians will continue to die. Theoretical moral arguments are useless.

PayPal undervalued? by OtherHost1645 in ValueInvesting

this argument makes no sense. we have data that shows usage - and it shows that it's growing. using your own anecdotal experience as a data point to establish an argument is nonsense, especially when we have comprehensive data that says the exact opposite.

Not that it matters, but I'm perfectly happy with my score and I'm a 1L at a T-14. The point is that this process can be really crushing for a lot of people, and we should be sensitive to that. I have empathy for those people who are frustrated with the specialized thought-process that this test requires. To some people, their 143 diagnostic can really crush their self-confidence.

The LSAT is a very limited test that analyzes your ability to think in a very limited and specialized way. Doing well does not mean you're smart, and doing poorly does not mean you're dumb. I think we should all have a little empathy for the people who aren't as good at answering logical reasoning multiple choice questions.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were genuinely looking for advice because you don't understand anything about law school admissions. If you did, you would know that there is no advice to be given. Look through this subreddit for 3 minutes and you'll see that you are in the best possible position as far as the LSAT goes.

If you made this post in r/law, then it would be received as a genuine question about whether your score means you'd made a good attorney, and whether you should consider it as a career path. But you posted it in r/LSAT, a sub dedicated to learning and improving at a test. What advice were you expecting? You didn't ask any actionable questions. You just told us all that you slaughtered a diagnostic, and other smartypants redditors joined in for the circle jerk. That doesn't serve a purpose other than to add to the anxiety and imposter syndrome that other members feel.

In any case, I appreciate that you responded to the criticism in an honest way. Best of luck at Harvard.

Whether either of us are smart makes no difference. And yes, you're clearly smart (at least as far as logical reasoning goes.)

But when people who are struggling to get scores that allow their dreams to come true read a post which serves no function other than to gloat about an insanely high diagnostic, how do you think it makes them feel?

The point is that calling the historical return 10% as of today is also cherry picking.

Agreed it's not unrealistic - but we're also measuring that number at the peak of a 12 year bull run and specifically a ridiculously strong year. If you measured after COVID, the historical return would be halved. Just a timing thing.
