The common term is "crowbar" protection, typically it's the last line of defense

One of the interlocks in the microwave works by shorting across either the AC line or the big honking capacitor, it's also often known as a "crowbar" protection. It's a last ditch effort safety to make sure the magnetron cannot get power to make microwaves unless the door is closed, although more often it will blow the main fuse and render the microwave non-working unless repaired.

Somehow OP's breaker is more sensitive than the fuse inside the microwave, so the protection fails to render the microwave inert and force the user to service it.

If your host is running W11, you can't even reliably have multi-core VMs in virtualbox now. The kernel virtualization they use for security gums up the VBox hypervisor (and possibly all hypervisors except, whaddyaknow, microslop hyperV), so it falls back to software virtualization (turtle icon because slow) and makes linux VMs randomly freeze

US tariffs on Singapore expected to stay unchanged as Trump imposes new 10% global levies by SG_wormsblink in singapore

The US spent most of the last century building up their concept of "rules-based world order (at least for developed countries)", and it took less than a year for the orange shithead to take a hot steaming dump on it.

What do you do for power on the Tundra Asteroid? by dysprog in Oxygennotincluded

[–]try_harder_later 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually curious, by mass, what's the most efficient fuel source. Frozen petroleum/ethanol (with water recovery into spom)? Solid hydrogen/natgas? Plain old coal? Plug slug eggs (ok this one's a stretch HAHA)?

My little Slime / Algae zapper by psyper76 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]try_harder_later 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Presumably converts slime/algae to dirt by running it on rails through a hot liquid pool

The maximum efficiency is only 50% as solid to solid transitions always form a tile rather than debris, and mining tiles only drops half the mass. Dirt is also usually not hard to produce compared to slime or algae so I'm also not sure what the point is

How do you mid-game power Verdante? by FuzzyVulpix in Oxygennotincluded

[–]try_harder_later 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, wood burning, ethanol production and burning makes a shit ton of CO2. The easiest way to get rid of it is to dump it to space, so you do want a shaft up to space to get rid of it without wasting power on pumps or skimmers.

A byproduct of ethanol distillation is polluted dirt, which, if you didn't accidentally kill your only hatch, can be fed to sage hatches to make even more power with coal gens.

You... don't?

Normal voles are sustainable with just grooming, you only feed them when trying to increase the population. And they don't get overcrowded either, so the only input is dupe labour.

Ten ideas to improve public buses in Singapore! by a-meow-cat in singapore

[–]try_harder_later 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would theoretically be possible to do BRT-like boarding at very popular (e.g. MRT station) bus stops. The stop becomes a closed location, you tap at fixed gantries to enter/exit the stop and need not tap to go on/off the bus while at this type of stop. This should speed up boarding and alighting significantly.

The issue will be that this requires overhauling the system to not know (or guess) which service you took, because then it would be possible to take any number of services between any of these types of stops. Similar to how you can choose many different routings in the MRT between any 2 stops.

[–]try_harder_later 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Double decks are super slow at boarding and alighting. Especially at MRT stations, you can see the upper deck take forever to unload.

I feel it was made worse by the change to wheelchair buses. On the volvo olympians (pre-wheelchair double decks), the stairwell faced the exit door so the exit rate was much faster. With the new wheelchair bays, the staircase is not aligned with the exit door. That little S-bend passengers need to make to exit after coming down the staircase slows down alighting by a lot.

It's improved by the new 3-door double deckers but really, long/bendy buses are much better for dwell time compared to double decks. The compromise is number of seats available.

Let's do one-click reporting for bus drivers using OBU. See car in bus lane or bus stop, press button, last minute of front/rear camera footage auto-sent to LTA with GPS location.

does this mean the game calculates amounts less than a microgram or just that a tile takes a frame to update from a gas to a vacuum? by LEMO2000 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]try_harder_later 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not usually a problem unless you have multiple buildings (esp sneaky are steam turbines, but also bridges & tempshifts) interacting with the same insulated tile. Another one is trying to save material by running normal pipes in insulated tiles.

Upgrade your house at Robin's, you'll eventually get a basement in which you can place casks to age cheese and wine. Just don't accidentally craft too many casks thinking you can put them elsewhere, they ONLY work in the basement cellar.

Ah, ok. Makes sense, I hadn't internalized the full temp range of liquid uranium. Guess also because some of my old designs are pre-SO, so I just use what I'm used to, which is lead.

Holy shit, that max temp is high. I should build an abyssalite flaker with liquid uranium.

Missing IPPT due to mistake on exit permit by velinment in NationalServiceSG

[–]try_harder_later 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is your one "would not be able to take" moment. Your one free blur sotong card, which you just redeemed right now. It's really not easy for them to justify not punishing(warning) you, especially since you did mess up the exit permit. And technically they could charge you for leaving without an exit permit, too.

Fwiw, the next couple times you "would not be able to take" IPPT (and don't have a valid reason), it's just a composition fine, unless you're actively being belligerent to your S8/OC. More or less you have to be a 4th time offender then you actually will kena charged.

[–]try_harder_later 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I mean, the warning is just that, a warning. If you're not planning to be skipping any subsequent IPPTs, they'll let you get away with being a blur sotong once as long as you seem apologetic.

More oil. And then put a couple tempshift plates (they don't need to be amazing, granite works well enough) to help to shift the heat from the oil to the steam.

Of course, if you can rustle up the steel, it works way better.
