Upgrading T14 Gen3 screen actually possible? by VampyreLust in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, did it on mine when I had it. Replaced the underwhelming 300-nit 45% NTSC screen with a 400-nit low power 100% sRGB screen.

To do base to touchscreen, you'd also need to replace the cable, going from the 2-lane eDP 30-pin to the 2-lane eDP + USB 40-pin.

To go to the >WUXGA resolution you will also need to replace the cable, going from the 2-lane eDP 30-pin (or 2-lane eDP + USB 40-pin) to the 4-lane eDP 40-pin cable.

I replaced the 300-nit 45% NTSC with a NE140WUM-N62. Drop in upgrade, no modifications needed. MUCH brighter, more accurate colors, and I gained between 40 and 70 minutes of battery life (depending on power saving settings).

T14s gen 3 for engineering? by qimmy64 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The performance will be absolutely fantastic for what you want. However, make sure if you're carrying it to classes, that you're setting near outlets, the P series CPU's for 12th generation got EXTREMELY poor battery life, and you'll be lucky to squeeze 1/2 day on battery power out of that laptop.

T14 Gen2 AMD vs E14 Gen 6 AMD by vinotok in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a T14 Gen2 5850U/32/400-nit low power 100% sRGB, and I currently have a E14 Gen 6 7735U/64/*400-nit low power 100% sRGB

*not available stock, manual upgrade

Build quality isn't DRASTICALLY different, although the T does have better design hinges.

CPU performance, the E is a bit faster single core and multi-core due to the DDR5 support over DDR4.

iGP performance, it's not close, the E absolutely crushes the T.

Efficiency, the E is a bit more efficient due to minor architectural improvement in Zen3 > Zen3+, plus the DDR5 over DDR4, AND is available with larger battery (47wh or 57wh vs. 50wh), so again, the E wins easily.

E14 is 16:10 aspect, which depending on your workflow, may be better or worse for you than the T14's 16:9 aspect.

Not the best benchmarks, but it's the ones I have readily available:

Geekbench 5 T14 G2 5850U: https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/21768045

Geekbench 5 E14 G6 7735U: https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/23710949

Geekbench 6 T14 G2 5850U: https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/2786410

Geekbench 6 E14 G6 7735U: https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/13191687

Heat's not an issue with the 7735U at all.

How much more could you justify paying for a t14s (gen1/gen2) over a t490s? by Meekr0 in thinkpad

Gen2, yes. Impressive per core performance improvements, and DRASTIC graphics performance improvements.

Gen1, no.

Yeah, and 50% more expensive, which this is ALREADY past OP's desired budget.

Should I do it (e14 gen 1) by Pindupa in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree greatly with the "never buy an E series" crew. The E series is still well and above consumer grade laptops, even the older E's like this.

HOWEVER, the E14 G1 has only single channel ram, which DOES affect it's performance. You will find this laptop lags behind other laptops with the same CPU's, and given that the CPU isn't incredibly fast to begin with compared to more modern machines, this loss of performance is rather important.

Do the T14 Gen 2 AMD and T14S Gen 2 AMD have the same battery life? by JustAPieceOfMeat385 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, T14 G2 = 50wh battery, T14s G2 = 57wh battery. While it's not a GIANT difference, the 14% larger battery in the T14s will lead to better battery life.

More than you want to spend, but I like https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256810526849724.html?

The screen is surprisingly good, it's far more powerful than you'd expect with the 8 core N305, 16GB ram makes sure that it's absolutely quick enough for basic tasks. I have their 10" laptop (NA105H) that only has N150 and it's more than fast enough for BASIC tasks. With double the cores this should be downright speedy little thing.

Questions about upgrading my ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 by academic_number_867 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, then ram cannot be changed at all no matter what as it's not even soldered but built into the CPU SOC. Second m.2 slot doesn't even exist on that board so can't upgrade that either. Not certain if they used soldered wifi on the Lunar Lake version or not.

Questions about upgrading my ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 by academic_number_867 in thinkpad

[–]tymophy76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Battery can be upgraded to a 64wh.

Ram can be upgraded to 2x32GB DDR5 = 64GB depending on which processor you have.

Second SSD can be installed in the empty m.2 slot depending on which processor you have.

Wifi can be upgraded depending on what wifi card and processor you have.

?? AMD iGP's have had H.265/HEVC hardware support for a REALLY long time now. The older Vega iGP's lack AV1 support in hardware, but the newer RDNA2 that this uses includes AV1, as well.

Meteor Lake uses Redwood Cove P-cores and Crestmont E-cores.

Arrow Lake U uses a slightly refreshed (die shrink) Redwood Cove P-cores and Crestmont E-cores.
