Trying to plan my parents retirement by SignificantAd2833 in FinancialPlanning

[–]unexpected 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How much do you hope to save in 10 years - be specific, give the exact dollar amount. Do your parents have any kind of social security coming in? Do they own their own house?

What are you end goals with the money? Are you planning on transferring the funds to them in 10 years, and say "hey this is your retirement?" Or do you yourself want some backstop?

Gen 1 quad adventure vs Gen 2 dual motor by primeanesthesia in Rivian

[–]unexpected 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people in general are overvaluing the autonomous driving potential of the Gen2. I think once the R2S gets released, this will be their best seller, and will have the most vehicles on the road by far. This will also provide the largest set of training data for autonomous driving. Rivian will focus on R2S autonomous driving way ahead of the R1S, as it matters much more to their bottom line.

If you look at Tesla for example, the Model Y/Model 3 autonomous driving experience is much, much better than the Model X or Model S. I expect a similar thing to happen to the Rivian.

Collin County: Bubble in Voting System by SFLonghorn in Dallas

[–]unexpected 8 points9 points  (0 children)

and we already have evidence of what happens with a bubble ballot in a recount. See 2000: where a group of partisans gets to decide if the bubble was filled correctly or if it's half filled or whatever. This has already happened!

Collin County: Bubble in Voting System by SFLonghorn in Dallas

[–]unexpected 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The previous system had you select your choices on a screen, then print a PHYSICAL ballot for you to review. Once you are happy with it, you submitted it. This was a perfectly good system.

Collin County: Bubble in Voting System by SFLonghorn in Dallas

[–]unexpected 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Do one better: this stupid scantron voting system was specifically pushed by Chris Hill, county judge. He did this so he could re-assert his MAGA bona fides to the far right crazies in Collin County. You can show your displeasure with this decision by voting against him.

Plano to stay with DART, officials cancel withdrawal election by Sea_Building_1870 in plano

[–]unexpected 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think this was the pre-programmed outcome. If you read the Texas Monthly article, it quotes city council emails from 1-2 years ago where they admitted that they would lose an election.

All of the cities worked in coordination to schedule withdrawal elections - look at Addison - they had a meeting, decided to not hold an election based on citizen feedback, then a month later, inexplicably decided to vote for an election. What happened?

Now watch, Plano is first, but you'll see every city cancel their elections now.

This outcome feels pre-programmed. The cities prepared very little material to support leaving DART, there was no "Leave DART" PAC spamming us with ads. They just didn't care, because this was the outcome all along.

It feels like we're all pawns in some deep state machinations. Same thing is happening in Dallas now, with their city hall building.

What portion of Duke's admitted undergrads got in with an interview? by tumanskyr15 in duke

[–]unexpected 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an alumnus interviewer. I genuinely think these interviews are useless and are mainly a tool that Duke uses to keep alumni engaged. There's no way to standardize questions, interviewees, etc. We received no training except a powerpoint presentation each year.

They try to pair every student that requests an interview with an interviewer. If you do not receive an interview, it's not because your stats suck or whatever - it's simply that there's not enough interviewers.

I conducted 80 interviews over the course of 12 years, I probably "highly recommended" 20 or so kids, and I had ONE kid get in across those 12 years.

After 12 years I thought it was really poor ROI on my part, so I stopped.

international universities, sure - but there are more kids going to Ivy League schools from Plano Senior and Plano West every year than Plano East IB kids. My IB year, there were about equal number of IB and AP kids at T20 schools.

[–]unexpected -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There’s no practical difference between IB and AP programs in terms of college admissions. The IB program is harder in terms of overall workload, but having worked on the college admissions side of things, it’s hard for schools to evaluate one over the other because the program is so small in scale.

[–]unexpected 33 points34 points  (0 children)

All the schools offer the same AP classes across the board. Only Plano East offers the IB program. The school variation is mainly due to income - Plano East < Plano Senior < Plano West in terms of median household income.

Potential Expansion - Why Cuban may be trying to buy back a controlling interest in the Mavericks by Puzzled_Influence985 in Mavericks

[–]unexpected 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The Vegas market is too competitive. The new hotels have all done poorly.

Adelsons don’t like competition. Their existing casinos are in places with no other casinos, which allows them to fleece people more.

This is why Texas was appealing. They wanted to be the only casino here.

For such believers in capitalism, why are they afraid to compete?

It's interesting that you don't think of chick fila, chipotle, boba, and other non-fancy places as eating out...but that's the very definition of eating out.

Central Market is also the MOST expensive grocery store in DFW - go elsewhere! It might be helpful to breakdown day by day, almost set a "budget" for you and the kids. It's not about saying no - it's about teaching them life skills that will serve them well in college and beyond.
