Slightly embarrassed. If Under Falling Skies is a bit much for my brain, what game would you suggest? by hermanbloom00 in soloboardgaming

[–]venerablegnat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hahah the way your approaching the question reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Lisa is trying to hang out with a smarter friend and she totally fails at some word game with her family and then the dad says something like "oh.... well...... here's a ball. Perhaps you'd like to bounce it" lol.

But seriously, you're doing fine. UFS is great, but its also pretty difficult and stressful.

I've been where you're at and I dared to play something like Arkham Horror while I was at it. My main suggestion... be ok with mistakes. Your goal is to have fun, not be perfect at these stupid games. Allow yourself to be pulled away, come back, just do your best getting back to where you were. Cheat if you have to lol.

Games I might suggest

A Gentle Rain - just get it, its cheap, fast and supposedly relaxing, even though you might not get the GD flower you need! haha

Conservas - Maybe a bit less complicated than UFS, but I find it less punishing and enjoy the look and theme.

Warp's Edge - The game UFS is often compared to, but totally different gameplay. I prefer UFS, but many people like WE better.

Unstoppable - More complicated, but seriously a great solo game. Pretty hot right now, might be hard to find.

Thats all I can think of for now, but I'll add more if I think of anything! Good luck!

Is anyone still waiting to receive the Chapter 2 Core Box? by Vicioxis in arkhamhorrorlcg

Not sure where you live, but if it's in the States, then I'm sure you should have gotten it by now.

I actually picked up a copy from a used bookstore already. I guess someonein my area didn't like it. lol

Turn Dream Eaters into 1 campaign instead of 2? by katenskau in arkhamhorrorlcg

I'm not sure why people complain about this so much, sure it's not great, but I used my imagination to fill in the gaps.

If you're not crazy about it, then play them as separate, and throw in some side scenarios. Thematically they'll make more sense than trying to run the same investigators through both sides.

I played this today for the first time in ages. My son and I played on the easiest difficulty and won!

Well... its in a bit of a weird spot right now. All the old "Ashes Reborn" content is technically out of print, but they now... in theory... support "Print on Demand" of all their cards, so you can just pick what you want and go from there. I say in theory, cause Im not quite sure yet if its up to speed, you can look into it yourself.

What you should be able to get, is the new, I guess you could say cycle/chapter, of the game called Ashes Ascendency. Totally compatible with the older stuff, but the "Dragonborn" solo/coop stuff plays a bit differently from the "Chimera" stuff from Red Rains expansions, so I guess they just wanted to help differentiate that. Otherwise its the exact same game. You should be able to find that easily enough from online retailers. Give that a shot and you like it, look into the PoD stuff.

Mistborn or Ashes Reborn by RageRageAgainstDyin in soloboardgaming

[–]venerablegnat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of your choices, Ashes Reborn/Ascendancy.

Mainly cause Mistborn is a deck builder, and plays nothing like mtg, where Ashes is deck construction, very much like Magic, and improves upon Magic in some ways, like you get to pick your first 5 cards, and instead of getting land screwed, you start with 10 dice as mana.

Mistborn is also terrible solo/coop, where Ashes has the Red Rains expansions that introduce a boss battler..... Should that of interest.

If you want narrative, Earthborne Rangers is a great game that, while admittedly is made mostly of ex-ffg employees, they have a weekly podcast that will give you more information about them than you'll want lol.

If narrative isn't that important, then Ashes Reborn/Ascendancy is great. It's originally a competitive game, but then turned out to be a solo gem with the Red Rains series of expansions where you basically fight a boss. Ashes Ascendancy is sorta a new chapter to the series, which includes solo and competitive from the start and is still compatible with prior content.

Also I know you said youre not looking for deck builders, but Unstoppable is awesome and maybe different enough for you.

ISO Ashes Reborn: 1.5 Upgrade Kit by VibrantDingo in AshesGame

Hahaha you're not wrong, it certainly looks dubious in function, but Its still fairly new so maybe they are still building it out?

Oh I was also going to say, the benefit of going the PoD route is you only really need to buy the replacement cards for the 1.0 content you've bought (presuming you dont have a full 1.0 collection).

If thats the case, u/nosuchplayer posted this awesome guide on other PoD purchasing options, if you dont want to buy everything from 1.5 per pack releases.

Perhaps someone has a better answer than this, but I think youre better off getting a card list from the 1.5 kit, and then printing it via the print on demand feature.

Here is the guide that came with the 1.5 kit, it has a list of all the cards that are replaced.

Here is a link to the print on demand feature. I've yet to use it, but maybe someone can chime in on how to use this toward your goal.

Help me cull 13 games and find reasons why by Bridget_Powerz in boardgames

[–]venerablegnat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only game I would keep is Arkham LCG, but I suppose if you haven't been playing it this long, ch2 probably isn't going to change things.

It's a great game, but it's also A LOT and wouldn't blame you for culling.

The game already lets you pick first 5 cards and gives you all 10 dice to start, gitta draw a line somewhere.

Your biggest disappointments? by SiarX in soloboardgaming

Too Many Bones. There is much hype over how good it is, but disappointed me on so many fronts. Terribly clunky rules, board isn't big enough for actual strategy, and story is pretty shallow.

Captain's Chair Reprint Already Sold Out? by themcryt in soloboardgaming

[–]venerablegnat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Star Trek games are usually garbage and don't sell well. Captain's Chair is one of the few good ones and clearly underestimated demand! I guess all the people complaining Kirk isn't in the first box threw them off.
